Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On what religious holiday did "The Passion" officially open nationwide?

Answer: Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, which leads up to Good Friday and Easter. For many Christians, it is a day of prayer and fasting, and some denominations hold services during which congregants are marked on the forehead with an ashen cross.
2. Was Gibson's Satan played by a woman?

Answer: Yes

The actress Rosalinda Celentano plays the intentionally androgynous looking Satan, who appears cruelly beautiful.
3. Why is Gibson's Pilate reluctant to execute the Christ?

Answer: Both of these

Gibson suggests both reasons for Pilate's reluctance, and these reasons are likewise suggested in the Gospels. Gibson suggests that Pilate ultimately chooses to execute Jesus because he fears that if he does not, there will be a Jewish uprising, for which he will be held responsible, and that in turn will lead to his own execution.
4. In "The Passion," what do the religious leaders do while Christ is being scourged?

Answer: Turn away

The leaders watch silently at first, but ultimately turn away. This scene may suggest the way human leaders can set in motion evil events for their own purposes, and then leave others to do the "dirty work," or it may suggest that the evil done to Christ was so great, that not even those who set it into motion could bear to witness it.
5. When Christ is apprehended in the garden of Gethsemane, who cuts off the ear of one of the Roman soldiers?

Answer: Peter

Christ, however, tells Peter to put down his sword, saying that "those who live by the sword will die by the sword."
6. When Mary runs to the fallen Christ on the road to Golgotha, and says, "I am here," Christ replies: "See mother, I make all things _____."

Answer: New

This stirring scene is complimented by a flashback which shows Mary running to her son when he, as a child, stumbled and fell in the dirt.
7. Which of the following characters, who appears in the passion, is drawn from ECatholic tradition rather than from the Gospels themselves?

Answer: Veronica

In Eastern Orthodox and Catholic tradition, St. Veronica handed Christ a head-cloth on the road to Golgotha. He presumably wiped his brow with it, and transferred a likeness of Himself onto the cloth.
8. When Christ is crucified in "The Passion," the nails are put into His hands. Did this happen in the Bible?

Answer: Yes

Some argue that the hands would not have supported the nails, and they would have been more likely nailed into His wrists. However, Gibson chooses instead to follow the traditional picture painted by the Gospels, where we are told that Thomas sees the wounds in Christ's hands.
9. How much of his own money did Mel Gibson spend on "The Passion"?

Answer: About $25 million

Gibson had trouble finding a studio to fund the production, because of its controversial nature and because of Hollywood's reticence to take on a project likely to excite deep religious feeling.
10. How much money did "The Passion" gross on its opening day?

Answer: $26.6 million

In its first five days, "The Passion" grossed even more than "The Lord of the Rings," earning a whopping $125.2 million to "Rings" $124.1.
