Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Scully's MIDDLE name?

Answer: Katherine

Dana Katherine Scully is played by Gillian Anderson. The mother of show creator Chris Carter is named Catherine (albeit with a C). Scully's last name comes from Vin Scully, Chris Carter's favorite sportscaster.
2. Who is Scully's F.B.I. partner in the eighth and ninth seasons of "The X-Files"?

Answer: John Doggett

Fox Mulder is Dana Scully's partner in seasons one through seven and ten through eleven, but Special Agent John Jay Doggett serves as her F.B.I. partner in seasons eight and nine. Doggett is played by Robert Patrick, who appeared as a villain in "Terminator 2." An ex-Marine, Doggett made his first appearance in the 2000 episode "Within."
3. When Scully leaves her job as a special agent, she eventually goes to work as a doctor at what hospital?

Answer: Our Lady of Sorrows Hospital

Scully left her job at the F.B.I. in 2002. She worked as a doctor at a Catholic hospital, called Our Lady of Sorrows. There, she attempted to treat a young patient named Christian Fearon against the wishes of Father Ybarra, a Catholic priest and hospital administrator who insisted the boy be allowed to die in peace in hospice instead.

After a seven year absence, Scully returned to work for the F.B.I.
4. Unlike Fox Mulder, Dana Scully has appeared in every episode of the "X-Files" television series.

Answer: false

While Scully appeared in most episodes and two movies, the character was absent from five episodes. Scully appeared only in archive footage in season 8, episode 11, "Gift," and not at all in "3" (2.7), "Zero Sum" (4.21), "Unusual Suspects" (5.3), and "Travelers" (5.15).
5. Which of the following is NOT the name of one of Dana's siblings?

Answer: Monica

Monica Reyes is the name of an F.B.I. agent with whom Scully works in season 8 of the "X-Files". Scully grew up the daughter of William and Margaret Scully. Her brother Charles appears on the show in flashbacks. Her big brother Bill, Jr., a naval man, becomes angry with Dana for not telling him about her cancer. Dana's older sister Melissa is quite different from her, believing as she does in new age mysticism.
6. Scully's favorite book as a child was "Moby Dick" and inspired her to give her father the nickname of Ahab. What did he call her in return?

Answer: Starbuck

Captain Ahab is the character who, in "Moby Dick," lost his leg to the white whale and pursued it relentlessly for vengeance. Starbuck was the young chief mate and an intellectual, calm Quaker, thus making his name a fitting nickname for Scully. Queequeg was a sailor and the son of a chieftain in the book, and Scully gave that name to her dog. (This the audience learns in season 3, episode 22, "Quagmire.") Later, Scully steals a dog from an animal control center named Daggoo, after an African crew member of the Pequod in "Moby Dick."
7. What degree did Scully earn from the University of Maryland?

Answer: B.S. in Physics

Scully earned her B.S. in Physics from the University of Maryland and her medical degree from Stanford University, after which she was recruited to the F.B.I. in her early twenties. In childhood flashbacks, Scully is played by actresses Tegan Moss and Zoe Anderson.
8. What are the names of Scully's children?

Answer: Emily and William

Despite being declared infertile in the fifth season, Scully learns that she unwittingly mothered a daughter, Emily, while abducted in season two. Her daughter was adopted by the Sim family and died shortly afterwards. Later, however, she had a son named William Scully III at birth.

He became the adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. Van De Kamp, who called him Jackson. It is eventually revealed that William/Jackson is the son of The Smoking Man and was medically conceived while Scully was unconscious in the seventh season.
9. What piece of jewelry does Scully frequently wear?

Answer: a gold cross

Scully was raised in a tight-knit, devout, Irish Catholic family, and her faith serves as a bedrock, even though it may seem somewhat in contrast to her scientific mindset and general skepticism about the supernatural. She is often depicted wearing a gold cross around her neck and works for some time at a Catholic hospital.

In season 2, episode 6, when Scully is abducted by Duane Barry, the necklace is left in his getaway car.
10. Which of the following is NOT true of Scully?

Answer: She was born in Richmond, Virginia

The audience learns the title of Scully's thesis in the pilot episode. Scully was not born in Richmond, Virginia, but rather in Annapolis, Maryland, on February 23, 1964. She moved to San Diego, California at the age of thirteen, when her father, an admiral in the U.S. Navy, was stationed there.

The audience learns in season 7, episode 7, "Orion" that while she was living in California, Scully's beloved Sunday School teacher was murdered in his front yard. This event was her first introduction to evil in the world.
