Eric gives this speech to his daughter after she decides to become engaged to Matt Saracen. The irony of the speech is that Eric is, at the moment, struggling to compromise in his own marriage. Tami wants to take a new job in another state, after years of supporting Eric in his career, but he seems unwilling to move. Eventually, however, he decides to support her in the pursuit of her dream.

Answer: It's my turn, babe.

Tami is offered a prestigious job as Dean of Admissions at Braemore College. Coach Taylor is initially reluctant to leave his home state of Texas and his new opportunity to be head coach of the newly combined East Dillon High and West Dillon High football team. "It's my turn, babe," Tami tells him. "I have loved you and you have loved me and we have compromised, both of us...for your job. And now it's time to talk about doing that for my job."

Tami had at least one other boyfriend before Eric. Her high school boyfriend, Mo McArnold, makes an appearance in season 2, episode 15, "May the Best Man Win." Mo accuses Eric of having stolen Tami from him, and he and Eric end up getting into a physical fight and toppling over a table before the episode is complete.

On the "EWG Binge" podcast, Connie Britton (who plays Tami) explained that she and Kyle Chandler (who plays Eric) agreed, "We're never letting the writers have us have an affair. If they try to do it, we're not going to do it. And we told them so."

When Eric is given the job of athletic director to help make up for a discrepancy in his coaching salary, he has a run in with the volleyball coach. This results in him needing a new coach. Who does he recruit? His lovely wife Tami, of course. Tami's willingness (however reluctant) to bail out her husband is one of the many examples of the support they lend one another throughout their marriage.

Tami insists Eric shouldn't give up his dreams even though she doesn't want to leave Dillon. Consequently, Coach Taylor moves to Austin by himself to work as TMU's QB Coach. But after their baby Gracie is born, the distance puts a strain on their family and marriage, and Eric eventually quits to be near them. Through some machinations of Buddy Garritty, he is able to regain his old job as the coach of the Panthers.

"His and hers closets, baby!" Tami exclaims in the pilot episode. She cuts out the advertisement for the house, and Eric jokingly tells her to "relent."

Homebuying is later a source of tension for the couple when Tami wants a house Eric doesn't feel they can afford. He fears their ability to make the payments if one of them were to lose a job. He honestly confesses that, as much as he would "love to give" her the house, he wouldn't be able to sleep at night if they bought it. She tells him she doesn't need the house; she just wanted them to discuss it and make the decision together.

"But seriously y'all. Eric Taylor is a kind and decent man," Tami says. "And he's strong, he has vision, and he's passionate. And he's real good at imparting that passion into the hearts of the people around him."

Tami learns she's pregnant before the big 2006 Texas High School State Championship game, but she waits until after the game to tell Eric. They had already agreed he was going to accept the job at TMU, and he offers to quit when she tells him he's pregnant, saying, "Football is not the most important thing in the world." Tami, however, insists he follow his dreams and take the job while she stays behind in Dillon with Julie and the baby.

Tami and Eric end up having to have a heart to heart about what is really bothering Eric, which is that he feels they have drifted apart. "I'm the one you're supposed to be yucking it up with," he tells her.

Coach Taylor was right to be wary of Tami's co-worker Glenn. While Tami's intentions were harmless, his were not. Glenn misreads their friendship and in a drunken moment after happy hour, he plants an unsuspecting kiss on her. Tami roundly rebuffs him, but she doesn't tell Eric what happened. Glenn, assuming she has told him, apologizes to him for the kiss.

Because Eric is secure in his relationship with his wife, he handles the apology with forced calm, and he isn't angry with Tami for not telling him. In fact, Glenn becomes a running joke in their household. Once, when Eric has to cancel a date with Tami, she teases that she'll ask Glenn to take his place. He simply responds, "Make sure he doesn't drink all my scotch."
