In 1933, Busby Berkeley's elaborate choreography and costumes revived audience interest and, in the latter half of the 1930s, stars such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers ushered in the classical age of musicals. But it was during the 1940s and 1950s that the 'golden age' of musicals occurred, and the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II can be credited with creating the music and lyrics for some of the most successful musicals of that age - in both stage and film.

The film co-stars Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio and Pat Hingle. And, while it earned fairly good reviews from the critics, it bombed at the box office.
