Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the boarding school?

Answer: St. Frances Academy

The name is shown several places in the film - at the train station, upon entering the grounds - and is mentioned throughout the film. The estate was donated by Mr. Gaffney and is the mother house of the order and the retirement home for the nuns. They are a teaching order and run a boarding school.
2. Who drives the school bus?

Answer: Sr. Clarissa

Sr. Clarissa also teaches Phys. Ed. and Religion. Sr. Clarissa is very proud of her bus and calls attention to the new wheels and paint job when talking to the station master when she arrives to pick up the girls. She loves to blow the whistle she uses for Phys. Ed. She is also forced to jump into the pool in full habit when some of the girls flounder when they don't know how to swim (because they cut class).

Sr. Clarissa is played by Mary Wickes, who is a bus driver in 'The Trouble With Angels' and also appears in the sequel 'Where Angels Go, Trouble Follows' and both 'Sister Act' films.
3. What is the name of the station where the girls get off for the school?

Answer: St. Francisville

When the train pulls into the station, the station sign is plainly visible. The school is St. Francis Academy, and the station is at St. Francisville. It is not explained if the school is named after the village or if the station is named after the school.
4. What mischief does Mary devise while on the train?

Answer: To use made-up names instead of their own

False names are Mary's idea. She says her name is Kim Novak and Rachel should use Fleur-de-lis. When Rachel asks Mary what her name is, she answers, "Kim Novak." Rachel says, "I like it," and Mary replies, "I do too. Too bad it's really Mary Clancy." Two other girls are convinced to use false names but they admit it when questioned and are dismissed.
5. What is Mary's catchphrase?

Answer: "I have the most scathingly brilliant idea!"

Each of the pranks the girls pull is preceded by this statement. This comes across quite well considering she has a British accent.
6. What is Rachel's annoying habit?

Answer: Licking her hand to smooth down her bangs

At one point during questioning, Rachel licks her hand out of habit but stops before smoothing her bangs when she hears Reverend Mother say, "Don't you dare!"
7. There are many statues on the grounds that the bus passes on the way up to the school, such as a concrete sphinx and a marble lion. Is a Statue of St. Francis among them?

Answer: Yes

A statue of St. Francis would be expected at a school named in his honor. It is in a bower with flowers growing over it.
8. Mary says the school resembles a medieval castle. What does Rachel say is missing?

Answer: The dragon

The school is shown as they are coming up the long drive into the grounds. It is grey stone with turrets and battlements, a studded front door and small arched windows in the turrets. When they first see the school building, Mary makes the comment that the school looks positively medieval and Rachel says the only thing missing is the dragon.

The next person you see is Reverend Mother. I don't think it is accidental that she is shown right after the word 'dragon'.
9. What does Mary say is the only difference was between this school and a girls reformatory?

Answer: The tuition

Mary makes this statement as they enter the large hall of the school and hear some of the basic rules of the school. The rules are fair but strict. Both girls have been to several other boarding schools and do not seem happy to be at this one. They feel that a girls reformatory would be just as strict and confined but the cost to attend the school is much more.
10. What do they call the organ in the main hall?

Answer: A crazy accordion

This is a huge organ and original to the estate; one of the many appointments that show the wealth of the man who donated the estate to the order. We see it when the girls first arrive.
11. Who is Mary's cousin who also goes to the school?

Answer: Marvel-Ann

When Mary greets Marvel-Ann with a "Hi, Marvel-Ann", she is answered with, "Drop dead!" Mary explains to Rachel that Marvel-Ann is her uncle's daughter but hates Mary since she told her she was illegitimate, even though it isn't true.
12. Where do Mary and Rachel try smoking the first day at the school?

Answer: The bathroom

They both try smoking in the bathroom while standing on the seats. Reverend Mother catches them and they get the first of many punishments - washing dishes and pots.
13. Some boarding schools require uniforms; does St. Francis Academy?

Answer: Yes

All the girls wear at least the skirt and blouse and the blazers are seen throughout the film. The only time they are not in uniform is at bedtime and during Phys. Ed. classes, which have their own uniforms in the form of gym suits and swim suits. The nuns are also in a uniform of sorts since they all wear habits.
14. This is a Catholic school. Does Rachel know how to make the sign of the cross?

Answer: No

This is an oft repeated sight gag. Rachel starts by touching her forehead, which is correct, and then becomes lost and uses both hands to cross her body and touch both shoulders. She is Catholic but you wouldn't know it by this. It's a mess but quite funny to see.
15. Mary and Rachel give tours for 35 cents. Where do they take the other girls?

Answer: Through the cloisters where the nuns live

There is Chapel from five to six each evening when all the nuns gather; a perfect time for the girls to get up to some mischief. When they are showing some of the other girls the nun's rooms they are asked how they know which one is Reverend Mother's. Mary's answer - "King size crucifix."
