Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mary plays the bass drum in the band. Which instrument does Rachel play?

Answer: Cymbals

Everyone plays in the band but Mary and Rachel have very little experience so they have simple parts; beating a drum or clashing the cymbals on cue. Sr. Elizabeth teaches the class and when Reverend Mother asks how she can stand the noise she shows her by removing the cotton she wears over her ears to deaden the noise.
2. The police are called when the girls go missing for three hours on a field trip to the art museum. Where did they go?

Answer: To see New Trends' band

St. Francis and New Trends schools compete in a band contest every year. Since St. Francis is so awful, the girls decide to spy on New Trends to see what the competition is. New Trends is only two blocks from the art museum.
3. What is the punishment for the girls leaving the art museum tour?

Answer: None

The girls convince Rev. Mother they were on a spying mission to see what the competition is going to be from New Trends' band. On their way out of the room, Rev. Mother is curious and asks, "How good are they?". The girls tell her they are just as awful as St. Francis but they have one advantage - uniforms!
4. The band from St. Francis is supposed to wear their gym uniforms for the competition with hand lettered sashes, in gold. Do they wear them?

Answer: No

Rev. Mother has a change of heart and asks a Mr. Gottchalk to lend band uniforms. The uniforms are wonderful but show a lot of leg. When she points out that St. Francis is a Catholic school, his response is that band uniforms are non-sectarian. In exchange she is supposed to light a candle; after seeing the uniforms she says she will light a small one.
5. The prize money for the band competition, if they win, is to be used to do what at St. Francis?

Answer: Buy a new boiler

Several times during the movie there is a lot of noise from the old boiler. Each time, Rev. Mother comments about their antiquated boiler and how the prize money from the band competition could be used to buy a new one. There are also scenes in the girls dorm room where they are wearing hats, coats and mittens to bed because it is so cold.
6. After the band competition, why does Mr. Petrie from New Trends comes to see Rev. Mother?

Answer: To protest the band uniforms St. Francis wore

When Mr. Petrie comes into Rev. Mother's office, he is clearly put out and begins by saying, "Those uniforms!". She knows it was an advantage but cuts off his protests adroitly by talking right over his words and going on about how the prize money will allow St. Francis to buy a new boiler, dirt free, reliable and blessedly silent. Mr. Petrie sees that they really need the money for the boiler and is reduced to congratulating the band on the win. As a closing remark, she suggests he really should see "our Mr. Gottchalk" and tells him to work on his brass section.

Jim Hutton plays Mr. Petrie. He may be best remembered as Ellery Queen in the series of the same name, and for acting in many movies including "The Green Berets". He is the father of actor Timothy Hutton.
7. Marvel-Ann has mumps over Christmas break; who stays at school to keep her company?

Answer: Mary

Mary says she can't abandon Marvel-Ann as she is her cousin so she stays at St. Francis over Christmas. Mary sees the sisters enjoying the holiday, putting up decorations, feeding the birds outside and especially the Christmas service in the chapel. Mary's look is very pensive when seeing all this. Rev. Mother sees her but pretends she doesn't and allows Mary to observe their chapel service.
8. What is Rachel making for the sewing contest?

Answer: A cocktail dress

Mary discovers Rachel working in the sewing room at 9 p.m. She is frustrated and vows she won't be the only one not entering the contest. The thread keeps breaking but she carries on. At 11 p.m. Reverend Mother finds her still working. When she asks Rachel "What is it?", Rachel says it's a cocktail dress.

It's lopsided with mismatched sleeves and quite a mess. After finding out Rachel has more material, she tells her to 'rip!' and begins tearing the dress apart with a seam ripper.
9. Mary comes to check on Rachel one morning and finds Reverend Mother putting final touches on the contest entry. What is Rachel doing?

Answer: Sleeping

Mary finds them at 5 a.m. but Rev. Mother thinks it must only be after midnight and says to let Rachel sleep. The dress is gorgeous and after Mary admires it Rev. Mother tells her about her childhood dream of opening her own design studio, 'the House of Madeline Rusche'; that was her name.

She was apprenticed to a designer after her parents died when she was 16. Her mother's home was Paris. Because she seems so happy when talking about her plans to design clothes, Mary asks her an important question, "How could you give it up?". Rev. Mother says, "I found something better." Mary ponders this statement.
10. Who wins the sewing contest?

Answer: Rachel

Rachel wins the contest hands down with Rev. Mother's creation. Rev. Mother takes the $10.00 prize money and says she 'knows' Rachel wants to donate that to the Mission Fund. She takes the scissors and says she 'knows' Rachel wants Sr. Margaret (the sewing teacher) to have them.

But then she insists that Rachel keep the box of lovely thread for herself. Rachel is pleased and relieved as she is fully aware she had little input in the design.
