When the girls first arrive and Mary tells Rachel about her cousin Marvel-Ann, she says one of the reasons she is at St. Francis is because it's run by nuns and Marvel-Ann has always wanted to become one.

Reverend Mother catches on and waits for them at the bottom of the emergency escape chute and makes the comment, "Where's the fire?". Their punishment is pots, again.

The girls skip classes for three years using various illnesses for excuses. They are made to go to the last class for their test because Rachel forgot malaria could only be caught in the tropics.

Rachel: "I have a feeling we shouldn't have cut swimming for three years."
Mary: "Think positive."
Rachel: "Oh sure. What d'ya think we ought to do?"
Mary: "Pray!"
Rachel: "Well, sister Clarissa won't let us drown."
Mary: "I wouldn't count on it."
Rachel: "I'll let you know if my whole life passes before me while I drown."
Sr.Clarissa: "That's the idea."
Mary: "Hang on Rache! I'm coming!"
Mary: "Help! I can't swim either!"

Sr Clarissa jumps into the water and saves both girls just as Reverend Mother comes in and comments, "How's the water, Sister?"

New Trends was a little too progressive and Rachel's father thought she would be more disciplined at St. Francis.

Answer: Bubble bath in the sugar bowls

This is a hilarious scene. Reverend Mother is talking to her neighbor at the dinner table and doesn't notice the bubbles rising from everyone's tea cups. Bubbles fill the room as the nuns are amazed, until she finally notices with the exclamation, "Those two!". Mary's punishment is the Stations of the Cross two times a day and Rachel - pots.

Answer: A life cast of Marvel-Ann's face

Marvel-Ann agrees to let the girls make a mask of her face. The plaster is applied to her face, two straws are inserted into her nostrils so she can breathe. After it hardens, they cannot get it off and Reverend Mother has to cut it off with heavy pruning shears. Punishment this time? Pots!

Answer: Allusions to horse racing to make it fun

Sr. Ligori is fun and all the girls love her. She uses allusions to the track and racing and the level of excitement is evident. "It's the second leg of the Triple Crown at Pimlico! The horses are at the starting gate. The bell rings and, they're off!" The chosen students race to the board to see who can finish the problems first. Lots of fun. Rev. Mother and Sr. Ligori are great friends.

The parents express concern to Rev. Mother about their daughter's social behavior and allot extra money to pay for a teacher to come to St. Francis and instruct the girls in walking, dancing and social graces. "Bend like willows, willows!"

Gypsy Rose Lee started her long career at age 15 in burlesque. She was very famous as a stripper but was never completely nude. She acted in many movies, was an author of three books and a play that was made into a movie. A talented actress, author and playwright, "The Trouble with Angels" was her last movie and second to last appearance on film. She died in 1970. The movie "Gypsy", starring Natalie Wood, was based on a musical inspired by her memoirs.

Sr. Rosemarie is the worst choice for this assignment. She cannot control the girls at all and they go wild at the department store trying on every imaginable type of corset and bra in all colors. Reverend Mother shows up, takes one look at the situation, goes to the nearest table and chooses a plain, white, cotton bra. "This one; two dozen." And that is the end of that. For once, all the girls are unruly.

Answer: "I hope I die young and very wealthy."

This is an important scene because it shows Mary another side of life and also the Reverend Mother's handling of a sad moment. One of the residents is very upset because her family has promised to come for her to spend Christmas with them. She said when they were young nothing was too hard to do for them. Rev. Mother asks her to do one more thing for them-be happy.

After witnessing this is when Mary makes the comment about dying young and wealthy. A personal growth experience for her.

Answer: Sr. Ursula

Reverend Mother takes them to task about their giggling about Sr. Ursula's accent. She tells them they know nothing about her; did they know she was in Germany during the war and that she hid 32 Jewish children for two years in the bombed out basement of a convent, was then captured and suffered horrible indignities.

She is so upset she cannot finish her sentence. Both girls regret their laughing, especially Mary.

Answer: The girls' smoking causes a call to the fire department.

Mary and Rachel are smoking cigars in the basement and open a window to let the smoke out. Sr. Prudence sees the smoke, rings the alarm bell, the convent is evacuated and the fire department comes. When the firemen break into the basement, the girls are found holding their cigars and in shock at being discovered. Reverend Mother looks in the window and sees them; the anger on her face is a treat to behold.

Reverend Mother tells Mary's uncle and Rachel's father the smoking incident is "The last, the final, the absolute end!". Voices can be heard through the door and the men come out barely able to speak. Mary's uncle won't speak to her and Rachel's father says for two cents he would take her to jail himself.

The girls are given pots until the end of term and a 1,000 word essay about 'the evils of smoking and why I gave it up'. When Rev. Mother talks with Sr. Ligori, she explains that she can't expel Rachel because she has a family who love her and is just being wrongly influenced and cannot expel Mary and subject her to her uncle's 'secretaries'. Through a window, we can see the latest 'secretary' in a leopard coat, leaning on her uncle's convertible, swinging her scarf. Rev. Mother feels she cannot be less tolerant of the girls than the church is of her.

Rachel comes back with a sombrero and chatters about a bullfight. Mary says they had a visit to see the Pope. She also has a photo of her uncle's secretary in a bikini.

Rachel gets her ears pierced over the summer break. She shows them to Mary when she tells her about the trip to Mexico.
