Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the league's original name?

Answer: All-American Girls Softball League

The league started in 1943 as the All-American Girls Softball League and ended in 1950 as the All-American Girls Base Ball League. In 1988 the National Baseball Hall of Fame officially recognized the league's name as the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
Beginning in 1945 the league allowed overhand pitching, nine fielders, as opposed to 10, and allowed runners to lead off bases.
2. Geena Davis portrayed a catcher and team leader for the Rockford Peaches in the movie. What was her character's name?

Answer: Dottie Hinson

Davis' character was inspired by the real-life player Dorothy Kamenshek. Kamenshek was the most feared hitter in the league with a career batting average of .292. Unlike Davis' character, who retired after one year, Kamenshek played for 10 seasons.
3. Kit, Dottie Hinson's sister, was traded to what team in the movie?

Answer: Racine Belles

Kit was played by Lori Petty. The Racine Belles did actually win the first championship, but it was the Kenosha Comets they beat, not the Rockford Peaches.
4. Femininity played an important role in each player's development. Therefore, players were required to attend charm school classes after daily practices.

Answer: True

True. The proper etiquette, personal hygiene, manners and the dress code were presented to all players. Each player received a beauty kit and instructions on how to use it.
This activity is depicted in movie scenes showing the players going through the basics of charm/beauty classes.
5. In the film, what was the name of the character who was the chewing gum magnate who started the AAGPBL?

Answer: Walter Harvey

Walter Harvey was played by Garry Marshall, Penny Marshall's brother. Of course, Walter Harvey represented Phillip K. Wrigley who had inherited the Chicago Cubs franchise from his father.
6. What was the name of Evelyn Gardner's son, a holy terror in the clubhouse and on the bench?

Answer: Stilwell

Managers of AAGPBL had more problems than just dealing with their team. While there may not have been a Stilwell in real life, there was a pregnant pitcher that played well into her second trimester.
Evelyn Gardner was the right fielder for the Peaches and was the subject of Jimmy Dugan's rant, "There's no crying in baseball."
7. Many of the players had husbands, boyfriends, and/or brothers fighting overseas. They all dreaded that telegram from the War Department. What player did Jimmy Dugan have to deliver that telegram to?

Answer: Betty Spaghetti

Manager Dugan had to inform Betty Spaghetti (Horn) that her beau was killed in action. When the telegram was delivered to the locker room, all the girls froze.
Betty Spaghetti was played by Tracy Reiner, director Penny Marshall's daughter.
8. Jon Lovitz played the baseball scout in the film. What was his name?

Answer: Ernie Capadino

Jon Lovitz has been a movie and television actor and a comedian for over 30 years.

He is sent to scout Dottie Hinson. While telling her about the AAGPBL tryouts in Chicago he is overheard by Dottie's sister Kit who exclaims that she'll go. Lovitz's character retorts, "I don't want you, I want her; the one that hits the ball. You can climb back under that cow".
9. Black women were not allowed to play in the AAGPBL.

Answer: True

True. The color barrier was broken in professional baseball by Jackie Robinson in 1947. The AAGPBL remained segregated. One black woman did try out but was turned away. Her name was Mamie Johnson, she went on to become one of only three women to play in the Negro Leagues.
The film shows a black woman pick up a ball and with little effort hurl it over everybody. The players looked at her in awe.
10. What is the name of the song sung by the Rockford Peaches in their locker room and again at the end of the movie?

Answer: Victory Song

"The Victory Song" twice mentions that the players are all-Americans, yet also notes that there are "Canadians, Irishmen, and Swedes". The song was written by two AAGPBL players.
