Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When the women reunite at their induction to the Hall of Fame, what reason does Ellen Sue give for not having "changed one bit"?

Answer: She married a plastic surgeon.

The film starts many years after the formation of the first All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, and shows a reluctant Dottie Hinson reuniting with her former teammates, as they are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. On seeing Ellen Sue, Dottie exclaims that she has not "changed one bit", prompting the former to laugh, before revealing that she "married a plastic surgeon".

Not long after this little exchange, Dottie reminisces about the past, and the film flashes back to where it all began for Dottie - on her parents' farm.
2. The Rockford Peaches' manager, Jimmy Dugan, is dead by the time his players are inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Answer: True

The Rockford Peaches are managed by Jimmy Dugan, (played by Tom Hanks), a one-time baseball superstar, who lost his own playing career due to alcoholism. Though still drinking during his early months as the Peaches' manager, Jimmy eventually sobers up long enough to take an interest in his players, and eventually he stops drinking altogether.

He develops a strong bond with each of his girls, especially Dottie, and continues to manage the team after the war is over. He even rejects Walter Harvey's offer to manage a men's team, stating that he already has his own team - the Rockford Peaches.

At the end of the film, an elderly Dottie spots a picture of Jimmy in the Baseball Hall of Fame, which reveals that he is dead, having lived to the ripe old age of 81.
3. Dottie Hinson and Kit Keller regularly bicker throughout the film, and at one point things get so bad that the latter is transferred to a different team. Apart from once being teammates, how else are they connected?

Answer: They are sisters.

Dottie (played by Geena Davis) and Kit, (played by Lori Petty), are the main characters of the 1992 film, "A League of Their Own". Dottie is the older sister, who can do no wrong in the eyes of her parents, while her younger sister, Kit, seems unable to do anything right.

As with most siblings, the pair bicker, but after Dottie fails to take Kit's side during an important match, they have a nasty argument, which eventually results in Kit being transferred to the Racine Belles.
4. How do Dottie and Kit persuade the baseball scout to allow Marla to come with them for the Chicago try-outs?

Answer: By refusing to go without her

While on their way to the Chicago try-outs, the women accompany the baseball scout when he visits Marla and her father. From the get-go, it is clear that Marla is a phenomenal player, but the scout, Lovitz, dismisses her because he doesn't deem her to be attractive enough. On hearing this, Dottie and Kit are appalled, and point-blank refuse to go anywhere with Lovitz until he accepts Marla. Faced with this show of female solidarity, the scout relents, and agrees to allow her to come with them to Chicago.
5. During the deportment and beauty classes the women are made to attend, one instructor makes a cruel comment on assessing Marla's face. What does this particular instructor recommend for Marla?

Answer: A lot of night games

During the early days of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, the players are forced to attend deportment and beauty classes, as those in charge of the League are determined to ensure that each player is well-versed in the art of being a lady.

However despite her best efforts, poor Marla sticks out like a sore thumb, having been raised, in her father's own words, to be more like a boy than a girl. Therefore when Marla is studied by a woman whose bread and butter is beauty, she is deemed to be a lost cause. To add insult to injury, when the woman's assistant asks "What do you suggest?", she responds with, "A lot of night games".
6. Despite being a good pitcher, Kit is known to have a weakness when it comes to hitting. According to Dottie, what balls can Kit not hit?

Answer: The high ones

Prior to meeting with the baseball scout, Kit is shown striking out, after missing three high fastballs, despite being warned by Dottie to "Lay off those high ones". Much later on in the film, when Kit and Dottie are no longer speaking, and find themselves on opposing teams, and in the World Series, Dottie tries to use this weakness against her. For when Kit gets up to hit, Dottie informs the pitcher, Ellen Sue, of Kit's weakness for highballs. Expecting her to strike out, Dottie is flabbergasted when, on the last pitch, Kit hits the ball, and, as a result, goes on to win the game for her team, the Racine Belles.
7. Who is the man with a famous namesake, who is captivated by Marla's singing at the Suds Bucket, and eventually marries her?

Answer: Nelson

When the Rockford Peaches let their hair down at the Suds Bucket, Marla gets drunk and sings on stage, much to the delight of one man named Nelson. While the rest of the patrons appear to be made melancholy by Marla's singing, Nelson is captivated by her, and promises to make sure that she gets home safely.

Not long afterwards, the pair get married, and Marla leaves, though she does promise to return for the start of the next baseball season.
8. Centre field, Mae Mordabito, is one of the film's most memorable characters, and is a tough-talking New Yorker, who's not afraid to ruffle some feathers. However baseball is all that she has, unless she goes back to which profession?

Answer: Taxi dancing

Mae Mordabito, (played by Madonna), is the Rockford Peaches' centre field, and is best friends with fellow Peach, Doris Murphy, (played by Rosie O'Donnell), who plays third base. Despite her brash and brazen demeanour, Mae is devastated when Ira Lowenstein, the League's general manager tells the women that unless more people come to watch them play, he will have no choice but to shut down the League. Desperate not to return to her old life, Mae breaks down in tears, and reveals that she used to be a taxi dancer, and is "never doin' that again".
9. Which Rockford Peach is propositioned by a teenager, who drives her to the Suds Bucket so that she can get her team to leave before their chaperone discovers they are missing?

Answer: Dottie

When the single girls on the team sneak out to the Suds Bucket, it is Dottie who makes sure that they are not found out. Though Mae poisons the dinner of the team chaperone, Miss Cuthburt, (so that she does not discover their plans), Dottie is forced to enlist the help of a teenage boy, in order to get the girls home safely, with Miss Cuthburt none the wiser.

However the boy who drives Dottie to the Suds Bucket fancies his chances with her, and even asks, "What do you say we slip in the back seat and make a man out of me?" Unfortunately for this young Casanova-in-training, Dottie declines.
10. When fan attendance picks up at the girls' games, the media hones in on each individual team member, and advertises them to America. Who is it then, that the media label the Queen of Diamonds?

Answer: Dottie

After Dottie performs a split on the baseball field, she quickly becomes the media's darling, and soon enough they label her the Queen of Diamonds. What follows is an aggressive advertising campaign, designed to draw the crowds to the women's games, which it does successfully.
