Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I coached the Rockford Peaches baseball team. Who am I?

Answer: Tom Hanks

Hanks, born on July 9th, 1956 in Concord, California, was cast as Jimmy Dugan. Jimmy was a well known baseball coach and he decided to coach the Rockford Peaches, a women's baseball team. This was during the days of World War II, and many women occupied themselves when they played baseball. Jimmy was well liked by his teammates, but they also blasted him when he upset a player named Evelyn.

In the middle of the movie, Dottie, the star player, told Jimmy she was going to go home with her husband, who just returned from the war, and Jimmy told her he wished she would continue to play but she went home. Hanks starred in the movies, "Big", "The Da Vinci Code", and "Angels and Demons."
2. I was the star player of the Rockford Peaches when I played for the team. I played for one season. Who am I?

Answer: Geena Davis

Davis, a native of Wareham, Massachusetts, landed the role of Dottie Hinson. Dottie and her sister, Kit, worked on a farm and milked cows, among other tasks. When they found out they were looking for women baseball players up in Rockford, they both decided to try out. Dottie was a catcher and Kit pitched for the team. Dottie decided, midway through the film, that she would go home to be with her husband, who just got back from the war, but later on, she decided to play for the team again.

At the end of the movie, Kit got a hit when she was at bat (by this time, Kit was traded to the Racine Belles) and Dottie got the ball and blocked the plate, and appeared like she would tag Kit out.

However, Kit collided into Dottie, and Dottie dropped the ball so Kit was safe and the Racine Belles won the championship game against the Rockford Peaches. Dottie and Kit spoke after the game, and Kit complained that Dottie blocked the plate but Dottie assured her that was how the game was played. Dottie then told Kit that she would miss her fellow teammates but, most importantly, she would miss Kit. Kit was shocked Dottie said this but Dottie told her she only had one sister. Dottie and Kit hugged. Davis had guest starring stints on the TV series, "Will and Grace" and "Family Ties." In 2005, she originated the role of President Mackenzie Allen on the TV show, "Commander in Chief." When Davis originated this role, she became the first actress to portray a woman U.S. President on a television series.

Many saw the new show, "Commander in Chief", as setting up for the possibility of Hillary Clinton becoming the first woman President of the United States.
3. Dottie was thrilled when I returned home, safely, from World War II. Who am I?

Answer: Bill Pullman

Pullman, born in 1953 in Hornell, New York, had the small role of Bob Hinson. Bob was Dottie's husband and he went to fight in World War II while Dottie played ball for the Rockford Peaches. Dottie became upset when one of her teammates lost her husband, from World War II.

When she cried for her teammate, she looked up and saw her husband standing right there. Dottie reunited with Bob, and she told him she would quit the team and go back home with him. However, Dottie changed her mind and went back to play for the Peaches, and Bob supported her decision. Pullman had roles in the films, "Independence Day", "Phoebe in Wonderland", and "While You Were Sleeping."
4. I happened to be a great player for the Rockford Peaches, with my slim body and short, black, hair. I came from Brooklyn. Who am I?

Answer: Madonna

Madonna took a break from singing, and went to acting when she starred in "A League of Their Own" as Mae Mordabito. Mae wanted to find something to do and figured she would enjoy playing baseball during World War II. When she first met Dottie, she told her she was from Brooklyn.

She joined the Rockford Peaches and proved to be a very valuable player. Mae got along with her teammates, and had a great batting average and did well when she fielded. Madonna guest starred on the TV show, "Will and Grace", and was also in the films, "Die Another Day" and "Swept Away."
5. I got traded to the Racine Belles and won the championship for them. Who am I?

Answer: Lori Petty

Petty, born on October 14th, 1963 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was cast as Kit Keller. Kit was often seen in Dottie's shadow, since she was not as good as her. Kit loved to swing at high balls, and this caused her to strike out on many occasions. However, Kit showed herself to be a great pitcher but she started to slip up in the championship game against the Rockford Peaches.

However, her teammates encouraged her to stay in there and Kit improved her pitching. Kit hit a two run, inside the park home run, to win the championship against the Peaches. Just before she and Dottie spoke, after the game, she signed some autographs for eager fans. Petty played characters in the films, "Chasing 3000", "Free Willy", and "Tank Girl."
6. I was seen saying "Thank you God" when it appeared like my team was going to win the pennant. Who am I?

Answer: Rosie O'Donnell

O'Donnell, a native of Commack, Long Island, New York, portrayed Doris Murphy. Doris was loud mouthed and very outspoken since she hated the fact that women ball players looked more like ballerinas. However, she decided to don a dress if it meant she could play ball and have fun (she was also not the only one to object to the uniforms). Throughout the movie, Doris fought with Kit and this influenced the Peaches' owner to trade Kit to the Racine Belles.

In the championship game, Doris was seen, as she thanked God, since they came close to the championship. Doris got very excited when there was just one more out but became upset when the Racine Belles won. O'Donnell had guest starring stints on the TV series, "Ally McBeal", "Murphy Brown", and "The Nanny." In 1996, she guest starred as a maid named Naomi on the ABC soap opera, "All My Children."
7. I cried, at one point, and Jimmy told me there was no crying in baseball. Who am I?

Answer: Bitty Schram

Schram got the part of Evelyn Gardner in "A League of Their Own." Evelyn was drafted to play for the Rockford Peaches and she was thrilled. However, Evelyn proved to be an inadequate player, often making mistakes in fielding and batting. In one scene, Jimmy yelled at Evelyn for messing up a play, and Evelyn started to cry. Jimmy objected to her crying, and this was when he uttered the famous line, "There's no crying in baseball!" Jimmy was ejected from the game, and this pleased the Peaches' teammates since they felt he was too harsh on Evelyn.

Despite Evelyn being a bad player, she got along with her teammates. Schram starred in the movies, "Fathers and Sons", "One Fine Day", and "Marvin's Room."
8. As an older woman, I reflected back on my days as the star player of the Rockford Peaches for the one season I played. Who am I?

Answer: Lynn Cartwright

Cartwright, born in 1927 in McAlester, Oklahoma, had the small role of Dottie Hinson as an old woman. At the beginning of the movie, old Dottie was seen as she looked at women playing baseball, and this caused her to reflect on her days with the Rockford Peaches.

After Dottie reflected on her final goodbye to Kit, after the championship game, she saw her older teammates and reunited with them. They went to the Women's Baseball Hall of Fame and it was there that Dottie shared a tearful reunion with her sister, Kit.

The original Rockford Peaches team took a picture together. We also found out, at this point, that Dottie only played baseball for one season. Cartwright guest starred on the TV series', "Knots Landing", "Dynasty", and "Little House on the Prairie."
9. As an older woman, I reunited with my sister, the star player of the Rockford Peaches for one season, at the Women's Baseball Hall of Fame. Who am I?

Answer: Kathleen Butler

Butler got the small role of Kit Keller as an old woman. In the final scene, when all the original players of the Rockford Peaches went to the Women's Baseball Hall of Fame, Kit was with her grandchildren and her children. Her grandchildren went to a picture of Kit when she played for the Peaches, and asked her if that was her. Kit told them it was her and that was when she saw Dottie. Dottie and Kit embraced and were thrilled to see each other there. Butler's first acting credit was as an older Kit Keller in "A League of Their Own." In 2000, she guest starred on the TV show, "Law & Order."
10. My husband passed away during World War II. Who am I?

Answer: Tracy Reiner

Reiner, born on July 6th, 1964 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was cast as Betty "Betty Spaghetti" Horn. Betty was a very good player, often getting many hits and fielding very well, and this earned her the respect of her teammates. In the middle of the movie, someone came to the locker room of where the ball players for the Peaches were and had a note from the armed services that one of the players' husbands had died. Jimmy Dugan told the man to leave and he grabbed the note from him. Dugan showed the note to Betty, and Betty broke down upon reading about the death of her husband. All of the players for the Peaches comforted Betty as she grieved the loss of her husband.

In the next scene, Dottie cried over Betty's loss and she feared her husband was dead as well but he came home alive. Reiner starred in the films, "Pretty Woman", "The Flamingo Kid", and "When Harry Met Sally."
