Answer: Thir13en Ghosts

Based on the 1960s, William Castle horror film "13 Ghosts", the early 2000s version, stylized as "Thir13en Ghosts", featured Tony Shalhoub as a father who inherits a house that he and his two kids (one played by a then 28-year-old Shannon Elizabeth) move into only to discover it's not only made of rune-marked glass walls, but meant to act as a prison for the souls of vicious, murderous ghosts. What they come to discover is that their crazy uncle, Cyrus (played by F. Murray Abraham), is trying to claim one last soul to complete the machine and see into time and space.

While the original "Child's Play" film (released in 1988) saw the introduction of the murderous Good Guy doll of Chucky killing and wreaking havoc, "Bride of Chucky" would be the series' fourth instalment, revitalizing the dormant franchise with Ronny Yu at the helm. With the ritual in-hand, Chucky's goal, in this movie, was to place his body back into a human's, really, but the story shifted to him instead placing his former girlfriend's soul into a bride doll after electrocuting her in the bathtub.

The story continues in "Seed of Chucky" with Jennifer Tilly playing the role of Tiffany, one she would play into the 2020s as the films made their way to a SyFy TV series.

Answer: The Skeleton Key

Southern Gothic horror, while quite well-known to media consumers through "True Blood" and a number of classic '70s and '80s horror novels by the likes of Michael McDowell and Robert Marasco, never really had many cinematic hits. While "Skeleton Key", starring Kate Hudson and Peter Sarsgaard, doubled its budget in the box office it wasn't critically well-regarded enough to make waves. Following a woman who takes a position as a nurse at a Louisiana plantation house, the plot of this one involves a Hoodoo ritual and an effort to relocate the soul into a new body.

Based on Barker's own novella, "The Hellbound Heart", the 1987 film "Hellraiser" is best-known for Pinhead, the awful Cenobite from Hell summoned to Earth by the Lament Configuration to claim peoples' souls and bodies and inflict true suffering. Kristie finds the puzzle box after moving into her Uncle Frank's home with her father and stepmother and it puts her into an evolving story involving her hedonist uncle's resurrection and the true natures of pain and pleasure.

The film was rebooted on Hulu in 2022.

Answer: The Grudge

Released in 2002 in Japan, "Ju-On: The Grudge" followed a non-linear narrative in which people visiting a Tokyo house were afflicted with an awful curse which, when it locked its victims in its gaze, ensnared them in a cycle of death and haunting brought on by absolute rage. "Ju-On" spawned its own long-running series in its native country as well as a series of remakes in North America starting with the Sarah Michelle Gellar-led "The Grudge" in 2004 and its reboot in early 2020.

Written and directed by horror mainstay Sam Raimi, "Drag Me to Hell" was a one-off horror film featuring Christine, a woman working at a bank, who happens upon an awful Gypsy curse that dooms her soul to Hell in three days-- all because she doesn't extend her mortgage. Though extreme, the curse proves to be a true occurrence and it's up to Christine to race against the clock to spare herself from her fate.

The film starred Alison Lohman in one of her final roles and was quite well-received by critics and viewers alike.

Answer: Djinn

Appearing in theatres in 1997, "Wishmaster" took horror to the fantasy realm, depicting the djinn as an evil being capable of granting wishes, but with the aim of freeing itself from its prison. In the movie, Alexandra Amberson comes into possession of a fire opal containing the djinn and, while it makes its way around L.A. granting curses to people, she tries to hunt it down and avoid asking three wishes of it, in turn freeing it permanently to enslave the human race. "Wishmaster" was followed by several straight-to-video sequels in subsequent years.

Answer: Freddy Krueger

The antagonist across the entire "A Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise, Freddy Krueger is revealed to be claiming the souls of kids falling asleep and stumbling into his nightmares, toying with them in his dream world until they perish. In "Dream Warriors", released in 1987, Heather Langenkamp's Nancy is a sleep psychologist at the Westin Hills Psychiatric Hospital where Freddy appears to have infiltrated the subconsciousnesses of her patients.

She and the kids there need to act fast to save their souls lest Freddy gain too much power.

He, of course, returns for countless more sequels.

Answer: The Witch

The first film directed by Robert Eggers, the 2015 movie "The Witch" was a period-piece horror following a family of colonists moving into the woods in North America to start their new life. One day, however, Thomasin finds that her baby brother has been stolen by a witch living in the nearby wilderness, and so begins a nightmare that the family is unprepared to face.

The movie culminates in Thomasin coming face to face with Black Phillip, the devil himself, hidden in the body of the family's black goat.

What Grace finds when she joins the Le Domas family, known for their fortune in games and toys, is that she's married into a family with ties to an awful, Hellish curse, in which new additions to the family must play a deadly game or else, have their soul claimed by Satan.

The game she happens to draw is Hide and Seek, and so begins a deadly game through the Le Domas mansion in which she must survive until dawn and, if she does, the rest of the family will be sacrificed in her place. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, better known as Radio Silence, would find good success with the film and go on to be attached to the "Scream" series after Wes Craven's passing.
