Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arthur Fleck

Answer: Joaquin Phoenix

The Joker has been a villain of Batman ever since he first appeared in the comic book "Batman #1" in April 1940. He has been played by Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson and even voiced by Mark Hamill. In Todd Phillips' 2019 movie, "Joker", the leading role of the criminal mastermind Joker, formerly known as Arthur Fleck, is played to perfection by Joaquin Phoenix. Phoenix won a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal.
2. Freddy Krueger

Answer: Robert Englund

Wes Craven created one of horror films scariest antagonists, i.e., Freddy Krueger, first seen in the 1984 slasher film "A Nightmare on Elm Street". The burned killer with the striped shirt and bladed glove was played by Robert Englund. The premise of the first film (before it became a franchise) was that a monster was invading teenagers' dreams and murdering them, thereby killing them in real life. Johnny Depp made his screen debut in this movie.
3. Jason Voorhees

Answer: Ari Lehman

Anyone up for summer camp? That is the setting for the original 1980 movie "Friday the 13th". Welcome to Crystal Lake where we meet a young Jason Voorhees, played by Ari Lehman, and his mother, Mrs. Voorhees, the camp cook. All of a sudden, summer vacation takes an ominous turn as the campers are being stalked and killed by a brutal monster with a burlap bag over his head (later a hockey mask).

In subsequent films of the franchise, Jason is played by Kane Hodder, Ted White and Derek Mears.
4. Billy Loomis

Answer: Skeet Ulrich

Billy Loomis, played by Skeet Ulrich, is one of the two villains in another of Wes Craven's horror films, "Scream", from 1996. Here we have Billy dressed as Ghostface, running around slashing high school kids in the middle of suburbia. With a great cast which includes Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore and David Arquette, Craven gives us not only a scary film, but a parody of horror films in general.
5. Michael Myers

Answer: Nick Castle

Michael Myers is yet another villain in a mask and with a very large chef's knife. Michael first appeared in John Carpenter's 1978 film "Halloween", and was played by Nick Castle. The franchise, which has lasted over four decades, first describes a very young Michael who murders his teenage sister on Halloween in 1963. Moving ahead fifteen years, Michael escapes from the sanitarium in which he was committed and returns to his hometown for vengeance.
6. Hannibal Lecter

Answer: Anthony Hopkins

Dr. Hannibal Lecter is a psychopathic psychiatrist who originally appeared in books by Thomas Harris. Lecter first moved to the big screen in Jonathan Demme's 1991 award-winning movie "The Silence of the Lambs". Anthony Hopkins plays the incarcerated murderer and cannibal who is just as scary without his mask as he is behind it. Jodie Foster plays the novice FBI agent who must try to extract information from this monster without losing her mind.
7. Pinhead

Answer: Doug Bradley

Another horror franchise is the "Hellraiser" series, based on Clive Barker's 1986 novella "The Hellbound Heart". The 1987 "Hellraiser" movie was also Barker's directorial debut. The plot finds Frank Cotton in Morocco where he buys a puzzle box, only to be torn apart when he solves the puzzle. Frank's brother and sister-in-law move into his house and continue the gruesome blood-bath created by the "Cenobites" who are led by Pinhead. Pinhead is played by Doug Bradley.
8. Leatherface

Answer: Gunnar Hansen

Writer and director Tobe Hooper created the 1974 slasher film "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre". In this movie, the antagonist is Leatherface played by Gunnar Hansen. Hooper has stepped up the villain's weapon of choice from a knife to a chainsaw, and Leatherface wears a mask of human skin.

It starts out where a brother and sister (and three of their friends) go to Texas to visit their grandfather's grave, only to come across a family of cannibalistic psychopaths.
9. Norman Bates

Answer: Anthony Perkins

Long before Gus Van Sant's 1998 reboot, there was Alfred Hitchcock's original 1960 film "Psycho", which was so scary people were afraid to shower. All-American actor Anthony Perkins played the role of Norman Bates, innkeeper of the Bates Motel. It was here that Marion Crane decided to stop for the night after embezzling $40,000 (of 1960 money); that was her second and final mistake. Marion Crane was played by Janet Leigh, mother of Jamie Lee Curtis ("Halloween").
10. Pennywise

Answer: Bill Skarsgard

How could I do a horror quiz without including a Stephen King character? In 2017, the movie "It" (aka "It Chapter One") was released, based on King's 1986 novel. The film deals with seven children from Derry, Maine. Bill Skarsgard (from the acting Skarsgard family) plays "Pennywise the Dancing Clown". We first meet Pennywise when he entices a young boy, trying to retrieve his boat, to come closer to the storm drain... Coulrophobia, anyone?
