Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

World War II, which lasted from September 1, 1939 to September 2, 1945, has probably seen the most films made about it than any other historical event. The subject lends itself to many different kinds of films, from government-made propaganda movies, jingoistic "let's get the enemy"-type films made to inspire the soldiers as well as the civilians at home, as well as love stories, documentaries, action movies, and even the odd attempt at depicting the actual facts of a battle or other wartime event.
Since the conflict was virtually worldwide, with few parts of the globe untouched by the war and its effects, every country involved that has a film industry made at least a handful of movies about the war. In some cases, filmmakers and actors from several countries pooled their resources and made big-budget films, depicting important battles and events from the war, with actors from each country involved playing key parts which showed the event from their point of view.
"The Longest Day", "Tora! Tora! Tora!", "A Bridge Too Far", and "Midway" were co-productions in which American, British, French, German, and Japanese actors played historical characters in the battles depicted. "The Young Lions" and "The Big Red One" tell the stories of German and American troops from the beginning to the end of the war. "In Harm's Way" and "Farewell to the King" are fictional stories set in the Pacific Theater of the war. "Dunkirk" details the evacuation of some 330,000 Allied troops from France in 1940. "The Desert Fox" profiles German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel in North Africa and Europe. "Battle of the Bulge", and "The Bridge at Remagen" are set near the end of the war as the Allies made their way into Germany, while "The Dirty Dozen" and "Saving Private Ryan" take place during the June, 1944 invasion of Normandy. "Stalag 17" is a story about American POWs in a German camp in late 1944, while "36 Hours" is a spy thriller where a German psychiatrist tries to get information from an American officer about D-Day by convincing him that it is now 1950 and the war is over.
"Battle of Britain" is the story of the RAF's victory over the Germans that saved England from invasion in 1940. "Kelly's Heroes" is a fictional tale of a group of American soldiers who rob a bank behind German lines in 1944 France. "Valkyrie" tells the story of a faction of German officers who attempted to kill Hitler in the summer of 1944.
"Paths of Glory" and "The Grand Illusion" are set in World War I, "Pork Chop Hill" is a film set during the Korean War, and "Platoon" is set during the Vietnam War. "Glory" is the story of a black Union Army regiment in the American Civil War.
