Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Shep Ramsey in "Suburban Commando" (1991)

Answer: Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan is the wrestling name of Terry Bollea, who was born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1953. He joined what was then the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1983, becoming one of its most famous and popular performers. He was among the first wrestlers to become widely known outside the wrestling community, his signature moustache making him instantly recognisable.

His first film role was a cameo in "Rocky III" (1982) but he went on to have lead roles in several films, often action comedies. One of these was "Suburban Commando" (1991), in which he played an intergalactic soldier who crashed-landed his spacecraft on Earth, leading to various predictable interactions with a "normal" suburban American family.
2. Fezzik in "The Princess Bride" (1997)

Answer: André the Giant

André René Roussimoff was born in the French town of Coulommiers in 1946. His large size was the result of giantism, a medical condition caused by excess growth hormones from birth. In 1964, at the age of 18, he began training as a wrestler in Paris, and made his debut with the WWF in 1973. He performed as a wrestler until 1992, shortly before his premature death in 1993 aged only 46.

Although he made a few television and film appearances, his most famous role was the outlaw Fezzik in the 1997 film "The Princess Bride", which was a modest success on its release but became a cult classic following its release on home video.
3. Dan Paine in "The Expendables" (2010)

Answer: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin was the ring name of Steven James Anderson, who was born in Austin, Texas, in 1964. He began wrestling with the WWF in 1995.

When a serious injury in 2003 led to his retirement form full-time wrestling, he began to make occasional film appearances in action films, most of which went straight to video. One which didn't was the 2010 film "The Expendables", starring Sylvester Stallone and an ensemble cast of "tough guy" actors, including Jason Statham, Jet Li and Dolph Lundgren. Steve Austin played Dan Paine, the chief henchman of rogue CIA agent James Munroe, played by Eric Roberts. Paine does not survive the film, being immolated in a burning building.
4. Luke Hobbs in "Fast Five" (2011)

Answer: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson

Of all the wrestlers who have moved into films, probably the most successful is Dwayne Johnson, who wrestled as The Rock. His WWF career began in 1996 under the name Rocky Maivia, although he soon shortened this to "The Rock" and became one of the WWF's best-known and most successful performers.

His first notable film role was in the 2001 film "The Mummy", in which he played the character of the Scorpion King. This was sufficiently successful to lead to a prequel film the following year, in which his character was the main role. His film stardom was really cemented by his performance as CIA agent Luke Hobbs in "Fast Five" (2011), the fifth film in the successful "Fast and Furious" franchise, a role which he repeated in subsequent films. By the early 2020s he was one of Hollywood's most successful and highly paid actors.
5. Ray Bradstone in "The Chaperone" (2011)

Answer: Triple H

Triple H is the best-known ring name of Paul Levesque, who was born in July 1969 in Nashua, New Hampshire. He began his professional wrestling career in 1992, joining the WWF in 1995 under the name Hunter Hearst Helmsley, which was soon abbreviated to "Triple H". After a successful wrestling career, he retired in March 2022, having been diagnosed with a serious heart condition.

It's probably true to say that his film career never really took off. His first film role was in the 2004 film "Blade: Trinity", in which he played Jarko Grimwood. In 2011 he had major roles in two films: the crime comedy "The Chaperone" as Ray Bradstone, and a crime drama "Inside Out" as Arlo Jayne. Neither of these were particularly successful, and subsequently his film career more or less dried up.
6. Peacemaker in "The Suicide Squad" (2021)

Answer: John Cena

John Cena was born in West Newbury, Massachusetts, in 1977. He first wrestled under the WWF banner in 2000, before joining its Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) development programme. He soon became a successful and popular member of the main WWF/WWE team, and in parallel developed a successful film career during the 2010s and into the 2020s, mixing action with comedy.

One of his most high-profile roles was as the character Peacemaker in James Gunn's 2021 film "The Suicide Squad", in which he played a member of the eponymous team of anti-heroes. A spin-off television series named "Peacemaker", also starring Cena, debuted successfully in 2022.
7. Lachlan in "Highlander: Endgame" (2000)

Answer: Adam "Edge" Copeland

The Canadian wrestler Adam Copeland, better known by his ring name "Edge", was born in Orangeville, Ontario in 1973. He joined one of the WWF development programmes in 1997 and initially became popular as part of a tag team with William "Christian" Reso. He initially retired in 2011 following a neck injury but returned to the ring in 2020.

His film debut was in the small role of Lachlan in "Highlander: Endgame", the fourth film in the series. Following his first retirement he appeared in a couple of direct-to-video action films, including "Bending the Rules" (2012) and "Interrogation" (2016).
8. John Nada in "They Live" (1988)

Answer: "Rowdy" Roddy Piper

Canadian wrestler Roderick Toombs (1954-2015) was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and performed under the name "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. He made his professional wrestling debut in 1969 and performed with various wrestling organisations before joining WWF full-time in 1984. He died of a heart attack in 2015 at the age of 61.

Between 1986 and 2015 he appeared in many mostly forgettable films, although he will always be remembered for his starring role as John Nada in John Carpenter's 1988 cult science-fiction classic "They Live". He plays a man who discovers a pair of sunglasses which, when he put them on, enables him to see that many of the population are in fact aliens who are controlling the rest of the world through subliminal messaging, which is also revealed by the glasses.
9. Drax the Destroyer in "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014)

Answer: Dave Bautista

David Bautista Jr was born in Washington D.C. in 1969 and wrestled under the name "Batista". He joined the WWF in 1999 and had a successful career before retiring in 2019.

Starting in 2006 he appeared in several not particularly successful films, until he gained both critical and popular acclaim for his performance as Drax in the 2014 Marvel Comics film "Guardians of the Galaxy". He repeated the role in two sequels, as well as "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). He followed this with roles in other well-regarded films such as "Blade Runner 2049" (2017) and "Dune Part 1" (2021).
10. Blain Cooper in "Predator" (1987)

Answer: Jesse Ventura

Jesse Ventura was born James George Janos in 1951 in Minneapolis, Missouri. After a period of military service in the US Navy (1969-75), he began a successful wrestling career under the name Jesse "The Body" Ventura.

Following his retirement from active wrestling, he appeared in several films, starting with the role of Sergeant Blain Cooper, one of the military team who are picked off one by one by the alien predator in the 1987 film of that name. His career took a further turn in 1991 when he was elected Mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, and then Governor of Minnesota from 1999-2003.
