You Goonie! Trivia Quiz

You may think the Goonies are a kids' gang, but the truth is that there is such a division in the town of Astoria, Oregon, that either a person lives in Hillside, the richer side, or the Goon Docks, the working class side of town.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mikey

Answer: Goonie

Michael "Mikey" Walsh is the leader of his group of friends who are gathering at his house. He knows the story about the lost treasure of the pirate One Eyed Willy, who he believes to be the first Goonie, and convinces his friends to have one last adventure before the Goon Docks, their homes, are torn down the next day. His father is the town's historian, and in the family attic the boys find an old treasure map. If they can find the treasure, they might be able to save their homes!

Now Mikey is not supposed to go outside the house. He has asthma, and his mother has given strict instructions, but the boys are able to overcome Mikey's older brother and take off looking for the places shown on the map. Mikey thinks Lighthouse Lounge might be the starting point on the map, and so the adventure begins!
2. Mouth

Answer: Goonie

Clarke "Mouth" Devereaux is the smart aleck of the group. For example, Mrs. Walsh asks him to give directions to the maid, Rosalita, as he is the only one who can speak Spanish. He nearly scares her to death when he makes her think that the Walshes are really criminals. But Mouth applies his knowledge of Spanish to read the treasure map, and is successful at helping the group find the "Inferno", One Eyed Willie's ship.

When the Goonies finally make it out to the beach and are rescued by the police, Mouth is also the one who translates what Rosalita says about finding the treasure in the pocket of Mikey's jacket.
3. Data

Answer: Goonie

Richard "Data" Wang is the group's tech man. He loves to invent gadgets, but they really don't seem to work very well. Nevertheless, he wears a belt and backpack everywhere he goes. He is really bummed out because his parents plan to move away after the Goon Docks are torn down.

His role in the adventure really begins at the Lighthouse Lounge, where he discovers the Fratellis' counterfeiting machine. He is so disappointed because he thought the money he has found would save the neighborhood. But Data does set booby traps, which slow the Fratellis down, along with the ones One Eyed Willy set; he begins to find his stride after falling through the floor, when he is saved by his Pinchers of Peril, and finds a tunnel that takes them further into the caves. His Slick Shoes help the gang cross a slippery log, and his Boxing Glove knocks a Fratelli brother out for a time.
4. Brand

Answer: Goonie

Brandon "Brand" Walsh is Mikey's older brother; he's athletic and definitely the strongest member of the group. He is sulking around at home because he has just failed his driver's test, and has been tasked with having to watch his little brother and his friends. He doesn't believe there is any treasure, and is easily outwitted by his brother's friends. They tie him up and escape to go out on an adventure.

When Mrs. Walsh returns home, Brand is in a lot of trouble. He is sent to bring his brother home, and since the kids have disabled his new bike, he is forced to take the pink little girl's bike that belongs to his neighbor. Then the worst possible thing happens. The girl from school that he likes sees him riding the bike.

After finding the kids' bikes at the Lighthouse Lounge, Brand goes to find them and ultimately joins the adventure.
5. Chunk

Answer: Goonie

Laurence "Chunk" Cohen likes two things more than anything else in the world - eating and telling exaggerated stories. Why, he can even smell what flavor of ice cream is in the freezer! He has told the sheriff so many stories that he is no longer believed, and has pulled a lot of pranks around town. Even among his friends, his behavior is a bit tedious. So when he shows up at the Walsh household with a story about seeing the police chase the Fratellis, no one really believes him.

Nevertheless, Chunk does accompany the group on their Goonie adventure. Chunk tends to be a klutz, so when the boys wanted to look at the interesting map display in the attic, an indiscriminate move from Chunk breaks the storage glass, and the boys find a treasure map. When they are exploring the old Lighthouse Lounge, Chunk breaks the water cooler, which allows Mikey to find the hidden passage.

Chunk does not, however, have the same Goonie adventure as the others. He is discovered by the Fratellis and locked up with their disabled brother, Lotney, or Sloth, who he befriends. It's a good thing that both Chunk and Sloth like Baby Ruth candy bars! They become fast friends; Sloth not only rescues Chunk's friends, but Chunk also promises at the end of the movie that Sloth could come and live with his family. In that way he redeems himself of all his misdeeds.
6. Francis

Answer: Not

The movie begins with the Fratellis staging a jail break the day before the scheduled foreclosure of the Goon Docks; Francis and Mama are breaking a brother out of jail. It is very apparent that Francis is Mama's favorite son; together they seem to torment Lotney, Francis' disabled brother, and they both admit that they considered leaving Lotney at the zoo one day. Mama allowed Francis to buy a toupee with the money that had been earmarked for getting Lotney's teeth fixed.

The family hideout just happens to be at Lighthouse Lounge, where the Goonie treasure map begins. It becomes a race between the good guys and the bad guys to see who can find the treasure first. Ironically, Lotney, who the family has terribly abused, shows his worth by rescuing them after the cavern with the pirate boat begins to collapse.
7. Troy

Answer: Not

Troy Perkins is a rich, spoiled brat. He drives a Ford Mustang convertible, and enjoys showing off to others. For example, he is happy to let the Goonies know that his father is going to foreclose on their parents' homes and openly torments Brand. Andy wears his letter sweater, even though she doesn't always approve of his actions.

On the day of the scheduled foreclosure, Troy accompanies his dad to the meeting so that he can witness the signing and enjoy the other kids' pain. He is very disappointed that the situation didn't work out the way he expected.
8. Andy

Answer: Not

This might have been a tough one, but Andrea "Andy" Carmichael is NOT a Goonie, even though her best friend, Stef, is. She lives in Hillside, is a cheerleader at school, and appears to be Troy's girlfriend, although it seems that she did agree to go on a date with Brand. She becomes an honorary Goonie when she returns Troy's sweater through the bucket in the Wishing Well.

Andy does play a pivotal role in discovering the treasure, as the map has musical chords written on it, and she is the only one who can even attempt to play the primitive organ that One Eyed Willy left as a clue. After she plays the chords, the Goonies find their way to the lagoon where the "Intrepid" has been hidden for a long time.

I did read that at the end, when the Goonies were found on the beach, there was a scene where Andy took the Goonie oath. It did not, however, make the final cut.
9. Jake

Answer: Not

Jake Fratelli, who is in jail for committing armed robbery, fakes his suicide in order to escape his cell. His family then creates a diversion which allows him to leave the city jail. There is a lot of bickering between he and his brother, which seems to stem from the fact that Jake is not Mama's favorite. Jake runs the family counterfeiting machine and really wants to be an opera singer.
10. Elgin

Answer: Not

Elgin Perkins is Troy's father, the wealthiest man in Astoria. He wants to purchase the Goon Docks in order to build a golf course there. He calls in the mortgages on the homes, knowing all the time that the people will not be able to come up with the needed money.

His visit to the Walsh household the day before the foreclosure was to take place prompts Mikey into proposing the adventure. Mr. Walsh isn't at home, so Elgin talks to the kids. On the following morning, when the Goonies are found, Elgin is there to get Mr. Walsh's signature on the foreclosure papers. Instead, it is suggested that he will receive the gems taken from One Eyed Willy to pay off the foreclosures.
