Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Small Faces were formed in 1965 in which UK city?

Answer: London

The band were formed in Manor Park, in the east end of London, by founding members Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones and Jimmy Winston.
2. Founder member Jimmy Winston was soon replaced by Ian McLagan. What instrument did they both play for the band?

Answer: Keyboards

Winston was originally a guitarist rather than a keyboard player, and his talents on this instrument were not regarded as being up to scratch. That, along with a clash of personalities with Marriott, led to him being replaced by McLagan just months after the band's formation.
3. The band soon hit the top of the charts, with "All or Nothing" reaching number one in the UK in 1966. Which studio album did the song appear on?

Answer: From the Beginning

"From the Beginning" was the band's second studio album. Tracks include three other UK top ten singles, "Hey Girl", "My Mind's Eye" and "Sha-La-La-la-Lee".
4. The Small Faces switched record labels from Decca to Immediate Records in 1967, and around this time changed their sound from Rhythm & Blues to which other style of music?

Answer: Psychedelic Pop

The band had been dabbling with LSD and this influenced their music as they matured as a band. Their first hit on the Immediate label was "Here Comes the Nice" which made it to number 12 on the UK singles chart.
5. Which "park" gave The Small Faces a number three UK hit single in 1967?

Answer: Itchycoo Park

The BBC banned "Itchycoo Park" from the airwaves for what it considered overt drug-taking references in the lyrics, but, as with most songs banned by the Beeb, this just caused sales of the record to soar.
6. The 1967 hit single "Tin Soldier" featured backing vocals by which American soul singer?

Answer: P. P. Arnold

Steve Marriott originally wrote the song for Arnold, but liked it so much, decided to keep it for his own band. Arnold (real name Patricia Ann Cole) was invited to sing backing vocals on the track.
7. "Lazy Sunday", a number two UK hit single in 1968, dealt with which social issue?

Answer: Noisy neighbours

Marriott wrote the song as a joke after problems with neighbours, and never meant it to be released as a single, but it soared to number two in the UK charts, the band's second highest placing ever.
8. What was unusual about the sleeve of the band's 1968 album "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake"?

Answer: It was round

"Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" came in a circular sleeve, designed to look like a large tin of rolling tobacco. The album was the band's most successful, enjoying a six-week stint at number one on the UK chart.
9. Steve Marriott quit The Small Faces in late 1968, and the band officially split the following year. Marriott formed Humble Pie, whilst Lane, Jones and McLagan formed The Faces with which vocalist recruited from the Jeff Beck Group?

Answer: Rod Stewart

Their record company wanted the band to keep the old Small Faces name, but the band members refused. The new band would enjoy a number of chart hits in the early 1970s before splitting, with Stewart concentrating on his burgeoning solo career.
10. A Small Faces reunion between 1975 and 1978 proved to be commercially unsuccessful, and they split again, this time permanently. They were given some belated recognition when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in which year?

Answer: 2012

Sadly, neither Steve Marriott nor Ronnie Lane lived to see the band inducted into the Hall of Fame. Stevie van Zandt officially presented The Small Faces/The Faces at the 2012 induction ceremony.
