Anatomy of a Song: All I Want is You Quiz

The 2007 film "Juno", starring Ellen Page, introduced this charming Barry Louis Polisar song to a larger audience. In 2008/9, the UK National Lottery was advertised with the same song and I thought it was lovely, and it inspired me to write this quiz.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'If I was a flower growing wild and free' what was the only thing I'd want you to be?

Answer: My sweet honey bee

'If I was a flower growing wild and free
All I'd want is you to be my sweet honey bee'

Honey bees (apis mellifera) are found all over the world, where they have been introduced by humans. Wild honey bees nest in hollow trees. In the UK, at least, there are hardly any wild honey bees left, wiped out by a pest called the parasitic varroa mite, and a mystery disease is also decimating domestic honey bees, with half the US affected. Of the wrong answers, the bumble bee is any member of the genus bombus, but it is not true that the bumble bee should scientifically not be able to fly. The carpenter bee can cause great damage to wooden houses. The Africanised bee is sometimes called the killer bee because of their aggressive nature and the fact they attack in large numbers - not something you want from a lover!
2. 'And if I was a tree growing tall and green' what would I want you to do?

Answer: Both of these

'And if I was a tree growing tall and green
All I'd want is you to shade me and be my leaves'

Excellent trees for shade include American Elm, American Linden, Chinese Elm, Pin Oak and Sugar Maple.
3. Does the singer want to marry the woman he's singing to?

Answer: Yes

'All I want is you, will you be my bride
Take me by the hand and stand by my side
All I want is you, will you stay with me?
Hold me in your arms and sway me like the sea.'

The ceremony of marriage goes back as far as the Sumerians, over 5,000 years ago. The earliest marriage certificate, approximately 2,500 years later, details a 14 year-old girl "bought" for six cows. Personally, I'd hold out for a herd at least!
4. If 'The rumble of your water would be my call', what would you be?

Answer: A river in the mountains tall

'If you were a river in the mountains tall,
The rumble of your water would be my call.'

The highest river in the world has three names. Known as Yarlung Tsangpo in Tibet it flows through Tibet, India and Bangladesh. In Tibet, it runs along the Himalayas at an average height of 13,000 feet (4,000 metres). In India it is known as the Siang, Dihang and Brahmaputra, which it is also called in Bangladesh. A truly mighty river, it also forms the Tsangpo Gorge, also known as the Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon. According to the Chinese, Yarlung Zangbo Grand Canyon is the world's deepest, longest and highest at over 3 miles (5,382 metres) deep in places and 1,628 feet (496.3 metres) long, relegating the Grand Canyon in Colorado to number two.
5. 'If you were the winter', what do I know I'd be?

Answer: The snow

'If you were the winter, I know I'd be the snow
Just as long as you were with me, when the cold winds blow.'

Silver Lake, Colorado had the world's deepest ever recorded snowfall in a single day with over 6 feet (75.8 inches) in 1921. The fastest wind speed ever recorded on earth was 231 mph (372 kph) at Mount Washington, New Hampshire. (Records as of February 2009).
6. If you were a wink, a seed, the floor, and a kiss, what would I be, in the correct order?

Answer: A nod, a pod, the rug and a hug

'If you were a wink, I'd be a nod
If you were a seed, well I'd be a pod.
If you were the floor, I'd wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I'd be a hug'

Well, they all rhyme, but the wrong answers don't make a lot of sense! These four line verses all have an aabb rhyme scheme and consist of two rhyming couplets. Yes, I know green doesn't rhyme with leaves - that was an example of assonance (where the vowel sounds match, but not the consonants).
7. 'If you were the wood', what would I be?

Answer: The fire

'If you were the wood, I'd be the fire.'

Of the other answers, I doubt anyone would describe themselves as a plank, with its connotations of 'thick as a ...'. The jack is the target for a wood in the game of bowls (not 10-pin bowling!) and Elvis Presley did a song called 'Wooden Heart', but a wooden heart was not a desirable thing to have!
8. If I was to be the desire what were you? A heavy clue - this is what the song is all about!

Answer: Love

'If you were the love, I'd be the desire.'

"Of Love and Desire" was a 1963 film starring Merle Oberon. Barry Louis Polisar writes childrens' books, poems and stories as well as songs. 'All I Want is You' was used over the opening credits of the 2007 film 'Juno', as well as an advert for the UK National Lottery in 2008/9.
9. 'If you were a castle' what would I be?

Answer: Your moat

Although all the answers are parts of a castle, what the singer wants to be is a moat. Hopefully not a moat like the one around the Tower of London, which had to be drained by the Duke of Wellington (as Constable of the Tower) in 1830 as a health hazard. One of the plans for the 2012 London Olympics was to fill the moat again.
10. Finally, '..if you were an ocean', what would I learn to do?

Answer: Float

'And if you were an ocean, I'd learn to float.'

The easiest ocean to float in would be the Atlantic. The higher the salinity (the saltier it is), the easier it is to float, and the Atlantic, along the Atlantic coast of America, ranges from 33-36 parts per thousand - compared with about 3.49 parts per thousand on average of all the oceans. The Atlantic is shrinking too, which is making it even saltier. One of the easiest bodies of water to float in is the Dead Sea - with a salinity of over 300 parts per thousand.
The UK National Lottery advert shows a couple on a very cold and windswept coast, who strip off and run into the water. It is supposed to show that Lottery players are wild and funky people. It's also accompanied by a very nice song, and I hope you've enjoyed my quiz on it!
