Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which singer guested on the fifth and final single from the album, 'Shape', which sampled the chorus of one of his own songs?

Answer: Sting

'Shape' is a remake of 'Shape of My Heart', a single from Sting's 1993 album 'Ten Summoner's Tales'. While the verses are different, the chorus remains the same; Sting re-recorded his vocals on the chorus with Sugababes as, according to Mutya Buena, he felt he could have done better with it. It was the only single from the album that did not make the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, and received mixed reviews.

The photo contains a bee. Gordon Sumner got his nickname of 'Sting' because he used to wear a yellow-and-black striped jumper that made him look like a bee.
2. 'Freak Like Me', the first single from 'Angels With Dirty Faces', was a mash-up of two songs. One was Adina Howard's 'Freak Like Me', but the other one was 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' Who sang the original?

Answer: Tubeway Army

In the early '00s, there was a craze for 'mash-ups', which involved splicing two songs together. Soulwax were particularly notable for doing mash-ups under the 2manydjs name, such as 'Smells Like Bootylicious' (a mash-up of Nirvana and Destiny's Child). Producer Richard X had originally made a mash-up of Tubeway Army's 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' and Adina Howard's 'Freak Like Me' under the name of Girls on Top, entitled 'We Don't Give a Damn About Our Friends'. Richard X wanted to release it commercially, but as Howard did not give her approval to use her vocals, he got Sugababes to do the vocal instead. The song was a huge success, and Gary Numan reportedly preferred it to the original!

The photo is of the London Underground, colloquially known as the 'Tube'.
3. Not including remixes, two songs on 'Angels With Dirty Faces' were only available on the UK and Japan editions. One of them was 'Just Don't Need This', but what was the other one?

Answer: No Man, No Cry

'No Man, No Cry' was the other song, and the UK and Japanese editions also featured an alternative mix of 'Round Round' (hence the bit about remixes). When Sugababes toured 'Angels With Dirty Faces', they would open with 'Just Don't Need This'.

The photo is a sign on a women-only coach on a Japanese train. ('No man', get it?)
4. 'Stronger' was the third single from 'Angels With Dirty Faces'. What position did it reach on the UK Singles Chart? (If you're stuck, think of a certain Christmas carol.)

Answer: 7

'Stronger' was written about Heidi Range's feelings of loneliness while being separated from her family and friends. The video featured the three members playing characters walking away from bad situations; Mutya Buena was a gangster, Keisha Buchanan was a member of a support group called Heartbroken Anonymous, and Range was a stripper. Range later said that she found performing in a scanty outfit for the cameras 'weird, and very invasive'.

The swan in the photo is a reference to the carol 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. The gift on the seventh day is 'seven swans a-swimming'.
5. On which record label was 'Angels With Dirty Faces' released?

Answer: Island

'One Touch' was released on London Recordings, but Sugababes were dropped due to sales not reaching the expected amount. After shopping around for a new label, they signed to Island Records, which - like the other answers - is a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group.

The island in the picture is Alcatraz Island, an island off the coast of San Francisco that was once home to an infamous prison.
6. Which song contains the lines 'you're all about the hype/when you see me on TV/two weeks later, talking my name/you are the one to blame'?

Answer: Blue

'Blue' features a rap by Keisha Buchanan and Mutya Buena in the middle section. When they performed 'Blue' live, this was replaced by a call-and-response section with the audience, where Buchanan said, "I say 'Suga', you say 'babes'. Suga!" and the audience responded, "Babes!" It was one of the songs that showcased the group's edgier musical direction.

The photo is a particular shade of blue known as International Klein Blue.
7. In 'Round Round', the second single to be released from the album, what does the singer get for free because she 'don't need no man'?

Answer: Kicks

The chorus goes: 'Round, round, baby, round, round, spinning out on me/I don't need no man, got my kicks for free'. 'Round Round' peaked at Number One on the UK Singles Chart (as did 'Freak Like Me') and sampled 'Tango Forte' by Dublex Inc., which itself contained an uncredited sample from Les Baxter's version of 'Whatever Lola Wants' from 'Damn Yankees'. Fittingly, in the video, the group are performing on a platform surrounded by a tornado.

The photo is of a donkey, an animal with a reputation for kicking.
8. In 'Virgin Sexy', what kind of boots is the singer wearing?

Answer: Snakeskin

The line in question is 'strobe lights, I'm looking tight/In my snakeskin boots, feeling lucky tonight'. When Sugababes performed this song at gigs, they would invite a young man from the audience onstage with them and serenade him.

The photo is a pair of snakeskin pumps, from the Beaty Biodiversity Museum, a natural history museum in Canada.
9. Which cartoon, starring the trio of Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom, featured 'Angels With Dirty Faces' on its soundtrack? (The picture is a reference to the intro!)

Answer: The Powerpuff Girls

'Angels With Dirty Faces' was a double A-side with 'Stronger'. Both the album artwork and the video featured cartoon versions of the group. Cartoon Network produced the video, which was based on the episode 'Nano of the North'. One of the collaborators on the song was the production team Xenomania, also known for their work with Girls Aloud (who would later team up with Sugababes on a cover of 'Walk This Way').

The cookies in the picture are sugar spice cookies, a reference to the 'Powerpuff Girls' introduction: 'Sugar and spice and everything nice. These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girl.'
10. 'Angels With Dirty Faces' was the first of many Sugababes albums with a different line-up. Siobhan Donaghy left the Sugababes after the release of their debut album 'One Touch', and was replaced by Heidi Range. Of which other girl band had she previously been a member?

Answer: Atomic Kitten

Heidi Range was originally a member of the Liverpool girl band Atomic Kitten, but left after being offered a solo deal and was replaced by Natasha Hamilton. She replaced Siobhan Donaghy in Sugababes after Donaghy quit the group, claiming the other two had bullied her.

Sugababes notably had an entirely different line-up by the time they released their final album, 'Sweet 7'. Mutya Buena left in 2005 as she had post-natal depression and wanted to spend time with her daughter, and was replaced by Amelle Berrabah; the group's fourth album, 'Taller in More Ways', had to be re-recorded with Berrabah's vocals. Finally, Buchanan left in 2009 and was replaced with Jade Ewen. Donaghy, Buena and Buchanan reunited under the name of MKS in 2012, but after the 'other' Sugababes split up, they reclaimed the name. 'The Lost Tapes', a collection of songs recorded by the original line-up between 2011 and 2014, was released in 2022.

The picture, naturally, is a kitten!
