Asha Bhosle is the sister of legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar. Asha made her film debut in 1943 at the age of 10 by singing a Marathi film song. Her first break in Bollywood was in 1948 in the movie 'Chunariya'. But it was O P Nayyar who was mainly responsible for giving her a platform to show her talents.

When the whole music industry was dominated by Lata Mangeshkar, Nayyar refused to use Lata's voice and instead gave Asha a chance. 'CID' (1956) was one of her first hits. The famous song "Leke Pehla Pehla Pyar" sung by Asha, Shamshad Begum and Mohd. Rafi is an all-time great. 'Naya Daur' (1957) saw a string of hits sung by Asha including "Saathi Haath Badana". "Nanhe Munne Bacche" is from RK Films' 'Boot Polish' and "Aiye Meherban" is from 'Howrah Bridge'.

Asha Bhosle sang her first song for O P Nayyar in the film 'Mangu' (1954). For the next twenty years they collaborated to give a number of musical hits. "Aao Huzur Tumko" ('Kismet'), "Jaiye Aap Kahan" ('Mere Sanam') and her last song for Nayyar "Chain Se Humko Kabhi" ('Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye') were all musical superhits.

Asha Bhosle's song "Zara Sa Jhoom Lu Main" from 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' was a popular song picturised by Kajol.

Asha Bhosle won a record seven Filmfare awards from 1968 to 1979, before she decided to stop accepting the awards. Her popular song "Parde Me Rehne Do" from the film 'Shikar' won her a Filmfare award in 1969. She has won numerous awards, including the most prestigious film award, the Dadasaheb Phalke award, in 2000.

She has also won India's second highest civilian award, Padma Vibhushan, in 2008.
