Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. These new lyrics would represent which Iron Maiden classic? "Sitting on the floor, playing with toys that are cool Mom comes in and says 'Go to bed, tomorrow you have school.' I don't want to go to bed, I don't want the lights down low I suffer from nyctophobia, which my mother doesn't know"

Answer: Fear of the Dark

Nyctophobia is the fear of the dark or darkness. It is especially present in younger children who think there are monsters hiding under the bed and furthermore dread what will happen when the lights are turned out. Adults also suffer from nyctophobia, and often the symptoms are worse with them.

"Fear of the Dark" was released on the album of the same name in 1992 (keep in mind that all release dates are worldwide unless otherwise noted). This would mark Bruce Dickinson's final Iron Maiden album before temporarily leaving the band. The song would gain even more popularity after its appearance on the Iron Maiden live album "Rock in Rio," released in 2002. "Fear of the Dark" remains a live staple of all Iron Maiden concerts.
2. Which Iron Maiden song is represented with these reworked lyrics? "Your feet must be comfortable, you wear those all the time You'd wear them if you were President, you'd wear them if you were a mime You'll wear them when you're dead, which leaves me to wonder: Will you still be wearing them when you're buried six feet under?"

Answer: Die with Your Boots On

The clue here is that the person in the song is wearing some kind of footwear and they are still wearing them when they're dead. Toby Keith's song "Die with Your Boots On," which is totally unrelated to the Iron Maiden song, was released on his 1999 album "How Do You Like Me Now?!"

Iron Maiden's version, meanwhile, was featured on the 1983 album "Piece of Mind," Bruce Dickinson's second album with the band.
3. I have created some new lyrics to an Iron Maiden song and put them in the form of a famous Christmas song. What song do we have? "There's Jeffrey Dahmer, Michael Lupo, Darren Mack, and Nannie Doss Graham Young, Ted Bundy, Susan Smith, and Michael Bruce Ross John Wayne Gacy, Charles Albright, Harold Shipman, and Joe Ball But do you recall David Berkowitz, Ed Gein, and Archibald Hall?"

Answer: Killers

Listed in the question are 15 killers, mainly serial killers from the United States and the United Kingdom. The severity of how they killed their prey range from basic murder to dismemberment and other grotesque practices that shouldn't be mentioned in this quiz. Practically everybody knows Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, but if you have some free time, look up the others if you're not faint of heart and read about some of them. The Christmas song I used for a template is "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

"Killers" is off of the 1981 album of the same name. It was the second Iron Maiden album altogether and the last to feature lead singer Paul Di'Anno.
4. Our next man's story makes up the lyrics to the next reworked Iron Maiden song: "I'm just a normal guy, I work for the Heywood-Wakefield Company I'm known for the furniture and baskets that I accompany If you need to carry apples or sit down and rest after a long day I'll hook you up like I did in the old days in Egypt and Pompeii" What song do we have?

Answer: The Wicker Man

Wicker is a hard fiber used to make various pieces of furniture and baskets. Documents show that wicker dates back as far as Egyptian times and wicker items have also been obtained in Pompeii, a town near modern-day Naples, Italy. The Heywood-Wakefield Company is North America's leader in wicker making, and has been around for over 100 years, headquartered in Massachusetts. Some of their older items are deemed extremely valuable by antiques collectors.

"The Wicker Man" was featured on the 2000 Iron Maiden album "Brave New World." The song had nothing to do with wicker but instead was about the successful 1973 British horror movie of the same name, which starred Edward Woodward.
5. Another set of new lyrics, another Iron Maiden song represented. Can you guess this one? "A band of Cardinals get together to vote It's time to elect a brand new Pope Two-thirds majority, let's sing out of a hymnal! We have a new Pope, so send out the signal!"

Answer: Holy Smoke

When a new Pope needs to be elected, the College of Cardinals, consisting of no more than 120 Cardinals, will meet at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City to vote on who it will be. If at least two-thirds of the Cardinals agree on a person, then that person is elected Pope. If not, the Pope can be decided by absolute majority, which would be half of the College plus one. If a Pope is elected, white smoke will come out of the chimney. If they are unable to come to a decision, black smoke will be released. Since it's for the Pope and it's coming from the Sistine Chapel, I can't think of any other smoke holier than that.

"Holy Smoke" was one of the more well-known tracks from the 1990 album "No Prayer for the Dying." The song is about the televangelist scandals that were going on at that time. Many televangelists at that time are referenced in the song, most notably Jimmy Swaggart, who is referred to as "Jimmy the reptile."
6. This demented love story represents the next Iron Maiden song. "I met a man in the bar one day, he was rather ugly But he was very cocky, and I love men that act smugly I got over the fact that he belches loudly and often fidgets I finally gathered up my courage and asked him for his digits." What song does this represent?

Answer: The Number of the Beast

This would make some love song, wouldn't it? The digits reference should have given this one away, but I hope you pictured the man at the bar being ugly and resembling a beast as well.

Considered one of their signature songs, "The Number of the Beast" was featured on the 1982 album of the same name. The album is considered among many as one of the greatest metal albums of all time, and is the first to feature Bruce Dickinson, which started a new era and got Iron Maiden noticed by the music community. The song is still played at live Iron Maiden shows.
7. This next sad tale represents an obscure Iron Maiden song. Which one? "Out here on the raging waters, feeling more delirious than Santiago This is absolutely crazy! I'd rather be in Key Largo! Whether I'm sucked into a whirlpool or eaten by a shark My hallucinations make me wish I could see forever dark"

Answer: Sea of Madness

An extra thumbs up to you if you got this one right. "Sea of Madness" is one of those forgotten gems, and was featured on the 1986 album "Somewhere in Time." The song was written by guitarist Adrian Smith. I mentioned the word "crazy" and talked about water, so I hoped that triggered the name of the song for you. You may have looked it up, too, which is fine.

I also referenced Santiago, a character from the 1952 Pulitzer Prize-winning American novel "The Old Man and the Sea," authored by Ernest Hemingway.
8. This is the only reworked lyric that will have you finishing the line. Borrowing from a children's nursery rhyme, which Iron Maiden title best fits into the end of this lyric? "The water is at the top, we must fetch it as fast as we can We're going thirsty and won't last much longer in this desolate land It's time to beat all those other Jacks and Jills Get your jogging shoes on and..."

Answer: Run to the Hills

In this question, I am referencing the children's nursery rhyme about Jack and Jill going up the hill and fetching a pail of water.

My mother says she's a fan of Iron Maiden, but the only song she knows by them is "Run to the Hills." I have a feeling she's not the only one in that boat. "Run to the Hills" was featured on the 1982 album "The Number of the Beast" and was often the band's closer at concerts (if it wasn't "Hallowed Be Thy Name") until the "Final Frontier" world tour. This tour featured Iron Maiden primarily singing songs from the 2000's decade, and only about five songs were from the older Iron Maiden days. Sadly, "Run to the Hills" was not included in their set list.
9. Some lyrics that might interest all of you movie buffs, these represent another Iron Maiden song. "My name is John Wayne, and I was in a movie with Paul Fix It was released in the United States in 1967, but Japan saw it in 1966 I'll answer any inquiry you have, I'm up to the task Any more questions you wanna ask?" Can you guess which song these new lyrics would pertain to?

Answer: El Dorado

Paul Fix only had a minor supporting role in the film "El Dorado," but I couldn't find an appropriate rhyme for Robert Mitchum. "El Dorado" was released by Paramount Pictures and also featured Ad Asner and James Caan. John Wayne plays Cole Thornton, a man hired to help out with a range war. I hope the last line "Any more questions you wanna ask?" helped you out as well, as that was a John Wayne line from the film.

"El Dorado" was the first single released from the 2010 album "The Final Frontier." The song is about the rough economy in parts of the world, most notably the United States.
10. This tale of two different sportsmen make up our next Iron Maiden song. All you have to do is guess which song it is. "Chuck Finley played in Anaheim, one of the great left-handed baseballers Phil Hellmuth played at the tables and won 6,032,391 dollars What would happen if they got together? Who would know? But imagine what the title would be if it was made into a TV show!"

Answer: The Angel and the Gambler

Congratulations if you got this one right, especially if you didn't have to look up anything. Chuck Finley played in Major League Baseball, pitching for the then-California Angels, now known as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, from 1986 to 1999. The left-handed pitcher finished his career in 2002 with 200 victories and 2,610 strikeouts.

Phil Hellmuth is a member of the Poker Hall of Fame, and holds a record of 11 World Series of Poker bracelets. He dropped out of the University of Wisconsin-Madison to pursue his dream, and became a multi-millionaire doing what he does best. He's a gambler, and Chuck Finley was an Angel, as referenced in the question, so that's how we get to our answer.

If you're an Iron Maiden fan and you remember "The Angel and the Gambler," it's probably not for a good reason. First of all, it was featured on the 1998 album "Virtual XI," which featured Blaze Bayley on vocals. The album was the worst-selling Iron Maiden album ever, selling a horrific 84,987 copies in the United States and just over a million worldwide. Another reason fans loathe the song is because it is too repetitive. The chorus is sung over 20 times and runs almost ten minutes long. Sorry if I brought up bad memories with this question.
11. This one can't truly be considered reworked lyrics since the original Iron Maiden song with this title had no lyrics to begin with. However, which song could these lyrics have been associated with? "He was born Borjigin Temüjin, but nobody knows when He founded the Mongol Empire and started invading then He defeated the Tanguts and died in 1227 Many people debated if he earned a trip to Heaven"

Answer: Genghis Khan

I could write a book about the Khagan of the Mongol Empire, but don't worry, I'm not going to. Genghis Khan was known for unifying areas, mainly through use of invasions, which caused his opponents to surrender. Who knows if he meant well? Most documentations of his past reveal betrayals and paint Khan in a bad light. It's odd that no one has a record of his birth, but everybody sure knows when he died!

"Genghis Khan" was an instrumental track from the 1981 album "Killers," which ran just over three minutes long.
12. These lyrics from a scientific standpoint represent another Iron Maiden song. Can you figure out which one it is? "A slow rising of air in a synoptic system waters the trees Just as long as it's above 32 degrees I am the storm front, and I am rolling through Take some cover now, or I am going to drench you!"

Answer: Rainmaker

Hopefully everyone thought rain on this one. Obviously, if it's below 32 degrees, you get snow instead of rain. The storm front represents the "Rainmaker" in question here.

"Rainmaker" was featured on the 2003 album "Dance of Death." It was also released as a single, marking the 37th single that the band released. People who bought the single also got to hear a special song called "More Tea Vicar," which featured Bruce Dickinson rapping. Yes, rapping.
13. Many people have probably experienced this feeling before, but what Iron Maiden song do these new lyrics relate to? "These are the most drawn-out 24 hours of my life Every slow minute to me is like a cutting knife I am jealous of everyone else, for time to fly I'd pay Why did Taylor Swift have the best one today?"

Answer: The Longest Day

There are, of course, 24 hours in a day. Everyone may have thought about this being a long day, but maybe didn't know the song. "The Longest Day" was featured on the 2006 album "A Matter of Life and Death," the 14th studio album from Iron Maiden. The song was written by Steve Harris and Adrian Smith.

Taylor Swift's song I referenced is called "The Best Day," featured on her 2008 album "Fearless," and is about her mother, Andrea. By the way, it's not a coincidence that she is mentioned in Question 13.
14. These new lyrics will give you a lot to think about, but they all relate to one Iron Maiden song. Which one is it? "No, she's not named after the capital of North Carolina, that's Raleigh Her name isn't Emily and her name isn't Anne (and it isn't Molly) She walks the streets looking for a guy named John If he is a beast, they would make a great Avenged Sevenfold song"

Answer: Charlotte the Harlot

This is one of my personal favorite questions. First of all, people often confuse the capital of North Carolina as being Charlotte, but in reality, it's Raleigh. If that didn't help you, I referenced the Brontė sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne were the Brontė sisters, and they all published books and poems throughout their lives, including "Wuthering Heights" (by Emily), "Jane Eyre" (by Charlotte), and "Agnes Grey" (by Anne). Molly, by the way, is a name I put in there because I needed a rhyme for Raleigh. Molly is not a Brontė sister.

"Looking for a guy named John" references the fact that the men that prostitutes go after are called "Johns." If "John" were a beast, he would pair with Charlotte, who is a harlot, and you would then have "Beast and the Harlot," a song off of the 2005 Avenged Sevenfold album "City of Evil."

"Charlotte the Harlot" is a song off of the 1980 album "Iron Maiden," which was the band's first studio album. Paul Di'Anno said "Charlotte the Harlot" was based on a real woman. The song "22 Acadia Avenue," featured on "Number of the Beast," was also about Charlotte. Two other Iron Maiden songs are loosely based on Charlotte: "Hooks in You" and "From Here to Eternity."
15. Which Iron Maiden song would these new lyrics be fitting for? "Dr. Wily creates robots to take over the land Ganondorf tries his best to get Hyrule's peace canned Dr. Robotnik tries to prevent Sonic from collecting all those rings Why must these guys do all these bad things?"

Answer: The Evil That Men Do

Since I've referenced all kinds of other categories you might find on FunTrivia.com, I'm not about to leave out video games, which is my specialty. Dr. Wily is featured in the "Mega Man" series, which started in 1987 and brought the company Capcom lots of success. Dr. Robotnik is featured in the "Sonic the Hedgehog" series and kept Sega alive during the video game war with Nintendo during the 1990s. Finally, Ganondorf, or Ganon, is featured prominently in the "Legend of Zelda" series. The actual Ganondorf appears in "The Legend of Zelda" Ocarina of Time," widely regarded as one of, if not the, greatest video game ever made. Even non-video game fans could have gotten the clue from the last line.

"The Evil That Men Do" was featured prominently on the 1988 album "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son." After this album, guitarist Adrian Smith would take a hiatus from the band. Other notable songs from this album include "The Clairvoyant" and "Can I Play with Madness," the latter of which my quiz's title is based upon.
16. Which Iron Maiden song do these next reworked lyrics represent? "Shuffling the cards that lay on my table, hoping to do a magic trick These jokers are laughing at me because I can't work a lick In frustration, I grabbed the cards that are worth ones and elevens With all my might, I hurled them to the heavens!"

Answer: Aces High

Cards that are worth ones or elevens are aces, most prominently in the game of blackjack, where the goal is to draw cards until you get as close to 21 as you can without going over, or "busting." If the wannabe magician in this song throws the cards up to the heavens, then they are "high" in the air.

"Aces High" was featured on the popular 1984 album "Powerslave".
17. Here are some more lyrics for you to read and another Iron Maiden title for you to guess. "This spagyric art fascinates me to the point of obsession I have a lust for transforming metals, that's my confession I really want to meet a girl named Audrey, my heart would harden like cement The first two letters of her name represents my favorite element"

Answer: The Alchemist

Alchemy is the art of transforming base metals into gold. It was called a "spagyric art" when it came to prominence in the 16th century. It was mainly practiced in Egypt, as well as parts of Europe and Asia. The first two letters of Audrey are Au, which is the symbol for the gold on the periodic table of elements.

What may have thrown everyone off is the fact that "The Alchemist" is not one of Iron Maiden's more well-known songs, especially since it is more recent. It is featured on the 2010 album "The Final Frontier," which is the 15th studio album by Iron Maiden. Everyone was freaked out because Steve Harris had allegedly said at one point that Iron Maiden's goal was to make 15 albums, and once the would-be fitting title "The Final Frontier" was released, everyone thought Iron Maiden was closing shop. They claim now that that is not the case. We hope that's true.
18. Let's party with these next lyrics, and while you're throwing confetti, guess which Iron Maiden title these new lyrics would best belong with. "New Year's is close and I can hardly wait That ball is going to drop and we're gonna celebrate The party animal in me is ready to fly out of the gate I'm about to go insane because it's only 11:58!"

Answer: 2 Minutes to Midnight

11:58 is two minutes to midnight. The fact that New Year's is close should give you an indication that I did not mean 11:58 AM.

"2 Minutes to Midnight" is considered the signature song of 1984's "Powerslave" album and is a favorite among fans. It was the tenth overall single released by Iron Maiden and has been featured in several video games (with edited lyrics).
19. These reworked lyrics would fit into an Iron Maiden song, but which one? "In central Romania there is a land, home to many old empires But perhaps more people know it as the home to many vampires Come over and visit sometime, Dracula will be your bud Watch your back, though, because he needs some blood"

Answer: Transylvania

Even if you don't know the song, "Transylvania" was probably a pretty safe guess on this question. "Transylvania" was featured on the 1980 "Iron Maiden" album. Transylvania is a real place in Romania, flanked by the Carpathian mountains. It has been ruled by the Romans, Visigoths, and Huns, among others.

A 2002 census revealed that over 7,000,000 people live in the Transylvania region. The census revealed no vampires.
20. Step into the ring with these next reworked lyrics and try to score some points with the judges at ringside by guessing what Iron Maiden song is most appropriate for the lyrics. "I've got my boxing gloves on, I'm ready for a fight The bell rings, and I promise the shiner I'll give you will be bright Unfortunately for me, you lead with your left hand, ready I'm not I should know you're about to nail me with a straight right shot!"

Answer: Sign of the Cross

For those of you who remembered the whole way through, I said there would be at least one song from each of Iron Maiden's studio albums. Through 19 questions, no song from "The X Factor" has been featured yet, so we immediately jump to that album. In boxing, leading with the left hand, or non-predominant hand, is a sign that the right hand, or dominant hand, depending on if the boxer is a southpaw or not, is going to deliver a straight shot called a "cross." This is how we arrive at "Sign of the Cross."

"Sign of the Cross" was featured, as I mentioned, on the tenth studio album of Iron Maiden's, "The X Factor." The song is about, believe it or not, the Spanish Inquisition. At 11 minutes, 17 seconds, this song is the second-longest song in Iron Maiden's history ("Rime of the Ancient Mariner" is the longest). As in "Virtual XI," Blaze Bayley was featured on vocals. Blaze would only record those two albums with Iron Maiden before Bruce Dickinson returned. Blaze left Iron Maiden on good terms with the rest of the band.
