Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The band's debut album, entitled simply "Iron Maiden" was released in 1980. Which track on it shares its name with a West End musical?

Answer: Phantom of the Opera

The line-up on the first Maiden album was Paul Di'Anno (vocals), Dave Murray (guitar), Dennis Stratton (guitar), Steve Harris (bass) and Clive Burr (drums). The album sold well for a debut effort, reaching number four in the UK. "Phantom of the Opera" was based on the novel by Gaston Leroux, later turned into a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.
2. "Killers", released in 1981, was the first Maiden to feature Adrian Smith on guitar. Tracks included an instrumental named after which warlord?

Answer: Genghis Khan

Adrian Smith replaced Dennis Stratton on guitars on "Killers". There were two instrumental tracks on the album - "The Ides of March" and "Genghis Khan", named after the 13th century leader of the Mongol Empire.
3. Bruce Dickinson made his Iron Maiden debut on the 1982 album "Number of the Beast". Which song on the album is all about the conflict between native Americans and European settlers?

Answer: Run to the Hills

Bruce Dickinson replaced Paul Di'Anno as lead vocalist on "Number of the Beast", the band's first UK number one album. "Run to the Hills" was released as a single and reached number three in Britain.
4. The fourth Iron Maiden studio album, "Piece of Mind", contains which track based on the Charge of the Light Brigade?

Answer: The Trooper

"The Trooper" was released as a single in the UK, reaching number 12 in the charts. "Piece of Mind" was the first album to feature Nicko McBrain on drums in place of Clive Burr.
5. Which track on the 1984 album "Powerslave" is an adaptation of a famous poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge?

Answer: Rime of the Ancient Mariner

"Rime of the Ancient Mariner" tells the story of a seaman who shoots an albatross. This leads to a curse being placed on the ship, which is becalmed in uncharted waters, the crew dying of thirst one by one.
Two other tracks off the album, "Aces High" and "2 Minutes to Midnight", were hit singles in the UK.
6. The 1986 album "Somewhere in Time" includes a track about which military figure?

Answer: Alexander the Great

"Somewhere in Time" featured two UK hit singles - "Stranger in a Strange Land" and "Wasted Years". "Alexander the Great" is the last track on the album, and tells the story of the 4th century BC King of Macedon.
7. "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" was Iron Maiden's first concept album. Which track from the album contains the lyrics "Just by looking through your eyes, he could see the future penetrating right in through your mind"?

Answer: The Clairvoyant

"Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" tells the story of a prophet who unsuccessfully tries to warn a village of impending holocaust. Four tracks from the album made the top ten of the UK singles chart - "Can I Play With Madness", "The Evil That Men Do", "The Clairvoyant" and "Infinite Dreams".
8. In 1990, Iron Maiden released "No Prayer for the Dying". Which track on this album was released as a single in late 1989 and gave them their first UK number one hit?

Answer: Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter.

"No Prayer for the Dying" featured Janick Gers on guitar in place of Adrian Smith. "Bring Your Daughter...to the Slaughter" was a number one single in the UK despite the BBC refusing to play it. "Holy Smoke" was also a British hit single, reaching number three on the charts.
9. Th 1992 album, "Fear of the Dark", was the last to feature Bruce Dickinson on vocals for seven years. Which track on the album has the same title as a Frank Sinatra film?

Answer: From Here to Eternity

"Fear of the Dark" provided Maiden with their third UK number one album. "Be Quick or be Dead" was released as a single and reached number two in the UK. The lyrics of "From Here to Eternity" have nothing whatsoever to do with the Pearl Harbor film starring Frank Sinatra!
10. The 1995 album "The X Factor" was the first to feature which singer on lead vocals?

Answer: Blaze Bayley

Bruce Dickinson left Iron Maiden after the "Fear of the Dark" tour to pursue a solo career, and was replaced by Bayley, formerly the lead winger with Wolfsbane. "The X Factor" sold poorly compared to other Maiden albums, reaching only number eight in the UK, their worst chart performance since their second album, "Killers".
11. Iron Maiden's eleventh studio album, "Virtual XI", included which track that was inspired by the film "Braveheart"?

Answer: The Clansman

"Virtual XI", the second and last album to feature Bayley on vocals, only made it as high as number 16 in the UK charts. "The Clansman" was inspired by the 1995 Mel Gibson film "Braveheart", which told the story of Scottish patriot William Wallace.
12. The 2000 album "Brave New World" saw the return to the fold of Bruce Dickinson and Adrian Smith. The album's sleeve features a futuristic depiction of which city?

Answer: London

Dickinson returned to replace Bayley, whilst Smith also returned, which meant Iron Maiden were now a six-piece band with three guitarists. "Brave New World" saw the band back in the UK album chart top ten, with lead-off track "The Wicker Man" reaching number nine on the singles chart.

The sleeve features iconic London landmarks such as Tower Bridge and St Paul's Cathedral surrounded by futuristic structures.
13. The thirteenth Iron Maiden studio album was the 2003 release "Dance of Death". Which track, the first fully-acoustic song by the band, contains the lyrics "From the red sky of the east, to the sunset in the west, we have cheated death and he has cheated us"?

Answer: Journeyman

"Dance of Death" includes "New Frontier", the first song on which Nicko McBrain had a writing credit, and "Journeyman", the first wholly acoustic track recorded by the band.
14. What type of vehicle or craft is featured on the cover of the 2006 album "A Matter of Life and Death"?

Answer: Tank

"A Matter of Life and Death" is not meant to be a concept album, but there are a number of war-related tracks on it. The cover features skeletal soldiers marching in front of a tank which is flying a Jolly Roger flag.
15. Released in 2010, "The Final Frontier" gave Iron Maiden their first UK number one album since "Fear of the Dark" in 1992. Which track shares its title with a Rudyard Kipling story?

Answer: The Man Who Would be King

"The Final Frontier" was a number one album in many countries, and reached number four on the US billboard chart, their highest placing in that country up to that point. The lyrics of "The Man Who Would be King" have nothing in common with Kipling's novella.
