Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who did Captain Lou portray in Cyndi Lauper's music video, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun"?

Answer: The father figure

Captain Lou played Cyndi's dad in the music video "Girl's Just Want to Have Fun". That was her real mother, Catrine, in the music video. The song peaked at #2 U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. That's right; this classic wasn't #1. Hard to believe, huh? Well, the 1950s series "The Honeymooners"'s (which Cyndi said on she loves on Johnny Carson's show in 1984) ratings were never so good, which is why they only made 39 episodes. Captain Lou Albano and Cyndi met purely by chance on a plane in 1983.

The rest is history.
2. Who did Captain Lou appear as in Cyndi's second smash hit, "Time After Time"?

Answer: A cook in a diner

Lou Albano appeared as the cook in the diner they were at in "Time After Time" music video. Written by Lauper, the song peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart on June 9, 1984 and stood at the top for a couple weeks. The movie Cyndi was tearing at in the beginning of the video was "The Garden of Allah" from 1936, starring Marlene Dietrich, Charles Boyer, and Basil Rathbone.
3. Lou Albano appeared in a controversial music video of Cyndi Lauper's called "She Bop". Memorably during this video, he was seen singing the line, "I hope He will understand." Who is "He"?

Answer: God

Captain Lou appeared all throughout this music video, the first time a little after the two minute mark. Just what were they hoping He would understand? I can't impart that information, for Funtrivia is a family website. But let's just say, contrary to what some people contend, the '80s were NOT just like the '50s.
4. Captain Lou Albano and Cyndi's real mother, Catrine, reprise their role as her parents in the "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" music video. What professional wrestler appears at the end of the video and beats up the harassing creditors and scares the rest away?

Answer: André the Giant

While a guest on "The Tonight Show" in 1984, Cyndi began talking about wrestling. Johnny Carson, unfamiliar with the WWF at the then present time, brought up how when he was young, he loved watching Gorgeous George. He told her that it was way before her time. Cyndi did not respond, so presumably she had never heard of him. "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" video aired in two parts on MTV.

The first part aired before the movie "The Goonies" was released, and the second part was released after the movie was released.

This transpired years before my time and I still know about it; imagine that. Captain Lou's great-grandfather was One-Eyed Willy in the music video. Albano laments that if only he were alive to tell him where the treasure was, because the Mom and Pop's gas station is being harassed by creditors.

The song "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" did not appear on any Cyndi Lauper album (in spite of much requests by fans) until "The Essential Cyndi Lauper" in 2003. Cyndi gave the reason frankly: She hates the song. Roger the alien sang the song in a 2010 episode of "American Dad".
5. Cyndi Lauper and Captain Lou Albano are both of Italian heritage.

Answer: True

That's right, they both are. Cyndi is 1/2 Italian (just like me). She is Sicilian, to be precise. The other half of her is German, as you can most likely tell from the name "Lauper". She is very proud of her Italian heritage. Lou Albano is 100% Italian. Born in Rome, Italy, he grew up in Brooklyn, NY.
6. During the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection, the WWF and the music industry were melded. This brought the WWF a high level of success it had never known before. What name did Albano call Cyndi to start the storyline?

Answer: a broad

Albano calling Cyndi a broad resulted in her striking him on the head with her purse. This began the Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection. This resulted in the "Brawl to End it All", where they pitted their female wrestlers against each other. Cyndi's won, and Captain Lou apologized for his remarks about women, such as calling them slime.

But from personal life experience I don't think he should have apologized. Following his apology, Lauper joked that Captain Lou had a surgery that removed calcium deposits from his medulla oblongata, curing him of his evil ways.
7. What episode of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" did Cyndi Lauper appear in?

Answer: "Captain Lou Is Missing"

Cyndi Lauper's appearance on "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" marked her first appearance on a television series. In the episode ("Captain Lou is Missing"), Cyndi bursts into Mario Brothers Plumbing with flyers crying that her best friend, Captain Lou, is missing. Mario (played by Captain Lou Albano) is saddened by the news, for Captain Lou is his hero. Mario and his brother Luigi vow to help her find him.

A world-wide search ensues. It comes to an end when the President of the United States calls off Operation Lou Search. Captain Lou is deemed missing forever. Mario attempts to cheer the despondent Cyndi up by reminding her that at least he got to know Captain Lou. Captain Lou is his hero. I felt the same way as Mario. I was barely a year old when this episode aired in the United States 11/30/89, but "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" was played in reruns for years, and I still remember seeing the show very clearly in my extreme youth. I had the privilege to meet Captain Lou Albano in a hardware store in New York years ago. I asked him about his being on the show.

He said he did it for the kids, and that he wanted to make them happy. He did the right thing. After Captain Lou died, it was the now grown kids from the 80's who made the most YouTube videos in his remembrance, not his wrestling fans. I had the equal privilege of meeting Cyndi Lauper at a book signing a few years ago. I asked her if she remembered being on "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" episode "Captain Lou is Missing". She told me that she remembered making it, but that she had never seen it.
8. From the episode of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!" with Cyndi Lauper, what song of hers were Mario and Luigi listening to on the radio at the start of the episode?

Answer: Girls Just Want to Have Fun

In 1989, while on "Regis and Kathie Lee", Captain Lou Albano shaved his trademarked beard and announced he would be playing Mario on the "Super Mario Bros. Super Show". The "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" music video was shot during the summer of 1983 around her 30th birthday. Cyndi Lauper altered the songs original lyrics (despite writing many songs she did not write this one), which were mostly about a girl pleasing a man, to just a girl's anthem. Captain Lou Albano appeared as Mario in a commercial warning kids not to do drugs.

He warned kids and anyone who offers them a drug is not their friend, and that "...if you do drugs, you'll go to Hell before you die."
9. In the episode of "The Super Mario Bros. Super Show" with Cyndi Lauper, where did Captain Lou end up being at the end of the episode?

Answer: he went out for fried chicken

In the episode, Captain Lou made a mistake. When he left Cyndi a note, he tore the page out wrong. The note did not say, "Dear Cyndi, I'm sorry I'm not here, but I've gone for good". It said, "I've gone for good fried chicken. Back in an hour." The episode concludes with Cyndi and Captain Lou finally going on the picnic.

He feels bad that he can't meet his biggest fan Mario (who had gone out to get Cyndi delicious New York pizza). It is getting late, and they must leave right away, but he tells Luigi to give Mario his regards. Mario's reaction to this news is never revealed, as the episode comes to an end.
10. Cyndi Lauper wrote the foreword to Lou Albano's autobiography.

Answer: True

"Often Imitated, Never Duplicated" was released in 2008 with the foreword written by Cyndi Lauper. Captain Lou loved Cyndi like he never loved no one else. He and Cyndi did fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. On October 14, 2009, Captain Lou Albano died a faithful Catholic.

He is gone but not forgotten. We all know Cyndi will never forget him. Before she met him, she was not successful (at rock bottom before her career took off, she was working at thrift stores). Cyndi and Captain Lou put their heads together and she became a pop icon. Cyndi, if fate has it you play this quiz, I want to remind you: never forget him. I know you won't anyway, and a day will never go by where I don't think of him either.
