Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From team member Amanda77586 about her favorite musical decade, the 1980s: What punk/New Wave/disco singer recorded an unusual cover of Peggy Lee's "Is That All There Is?" in 1980? It resulted in a lawsuit by the song's writers.

Answer: Cristina

Cristina Monet (who, like Madonna, recorded under her first name only) was born into a life of wealth and privilege to a French father and American mother. She was a Harvard dropout and a struggling theater critic when she met and married British heir Michael Zilkha in 1980. Zilkha founded Ze Records, and Cristina recorded two albums for his label.

Her first album "Cristina" was released in 1980 and was produced by August Darnell, a.k.a. Kid Creole. Her second album "Sleep it Off" was produced by Don Was. Neither album was a commercial success, and she dropped out of the music business.

"Is That All There Is?" was released on Ze Records in 1980 as a two-sided single with "Jungle Love". Cristina improvised some rather disturbing new lyrics to the song involving Quaaludes and domestic violence, which caused the song's writers, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, to file an injunction barring the further release of this recording. The recording was pulled off the market and was unavailable for several years, but it was reissued in 2004 by Ze Records.
2. From team member wordking, an unapologetic Slim Whitman fan: What was Slim Whitman's first song that earned him a gold record?

Answer: Indian Love Call

Yodeling country singer Slim Whitman was discovered by Colonel Tom Parker, who later also discovered Elvis Presley. Whitman is perhaps best known for the hit song "Indian Love Call". The song was used humorously in the 1996 movie "Mars Attacks!" as a foolproof way to kill aliens.

If you want to learn more about Slim Whitman, wordking recommends the biography "Mr.Songman--The Slim Whitman Story", by Kenneth L.Gibble
3. From team member Mister420: The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992 was one of the most watched concerts ever. An estimated 1.2 billion people viewed the show on TV and 72,000 people sold out Wembley Stadium to witness the event live. Who sang "We Are The Champions" with the surviving members of Queen at the end of the show?

Answer: Liza Minelli

Axl Rose also performed "We Will Rock You". Additionally, he took part in a duet with Elton John on "Bohemian Rhapsody". Paul Young sang "Radio Ga Ga".
4. From our Beatlemaniac team member Ragged: Name the Beatles song that contains lyrics in French.

Answer: Michelle

The second verse of the song "Michelle" contains the lyrics "Michelle, ma belle sont les mots qui vont tres bien ensemble" ("These are words that go together well"). The story behind the song is that Paul McCartney once attended a party full of pretentious art students. One of them was dressed in the stereotypical Beatnik style (goatee, etc.) and was singing a French song. Paul wrote a mocking imitation of the song with "French-sounding" sounds, but no actual French words. It later became a real song (thanks to some encouragement by John Lennon) with real French lyrics (thanks to a French teacher friend of Paul's). In 1965, "Michelle" appeared on the album "Rubber Soul" in its final form.

"Here Comes the Sun King" contains some lyrics in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, but no French. The other two songs contain only English lyrics.
5. From the Music Moguls team's fearless leader, rlm1626: Which of these wrestling personalities was a vocalist in a popular 60s group called the Gentrys?

Answer: Jimmy Hart

Jimmy Hart (a.k.a. the Mouth of the South) is a professional wrestling manager as well as a musician. He has managed such famous wrestlers as Hulk Hogan, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Bret Hart, and the Honky Tonk Man. As a teenager, he sang for the Memphis band The Gentrys, best known for their 1965 hit song "Keep on Dancin'".
6. From team member TellyAddict10, our resident expert on musicals: From which Broadway show do these lyrics come from? "Everywhere she goes, a million dreams of love surround her".

Answer: Movin' Out

These lyrics are from the song "She's Got a Way". The musical "Movin' Out" features choreography by Twyla Tharp and the songs of Billy Joel.
7. From team member doorsfan58: The (in)famous 'chicken incident' during an Alice Cooper concert, which began the urban legend that Alice killed baby animals on stage as a part of his show, occurred during which music festival?

Answer: The Toronto Rock N' Roll Revival (1969)

At the time of the Toronto Revival (which included Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band, and the Doors), Alice was just beginning to make a name for himself and his band. He had not yet developed the elaborate stage show(s) he would later become known for. Just about anything and everything was used as stage props, including feather-stuffed pillows which would be ripped open and strewn over the audience.

At one point during the show, a live chicken somehow got on stage, and Alice, being a city boy and not realizing the limited flying skills of the average chicken, tossed it off the stage and over the crowd (fully expecting it to fly away).

Instead, the unfortunate fowl dive-bombed into the audience, which promptly ripped it apart in their enthusiasm.

The entire incident was documented by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker, who had also filmed the Monterey Pop Festival. Portions of the film can be seen on the Cooper documentary "Prime Cuts". Obviously, the entire event gave Alice and the band a ton of publicity, and set the stage not only for Alice's 'Rocker From Hell' image, but began the 'onstage chicken killing' (or puppy/kitten stomping, depending on the teller of the tale) urban legend which would later be applied to Ozzy Osbourne and Marilyn Manson.
8. From team member TelegramSam1: In 2005, Columbia Records released an early live performance by Bob Dylan at a legendary folk music venue in New York City's Greenwich Village. What was the name of this recording?

Answer: Live at the Gaslight 1962

Initially sold exclusively through Starbucks Coffee in the U.S., "Live at the Gaslight 1962" documents some of the earliest known performances of future Dylan classics, including "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright."

The Gaslight was located at 116 MacDougal Street in Manhattan. It closed in 1971. In the 1980s and 1990s, it was the site of a popular rock 'n' roll dive called The Scrap Bar. Later on it became The Wreck Room, and in March 2003 it became a cocktail lounge and nightclub called the Alibi Lounge.
9. From team member rrtallon: Which man played piano for Gary Lewis and the Playboys when they were at the height of their popularity? He went on to a successful solo career as a blues/rock pianist.

Answer: Leon Russell

Leon Russell was born in Oklahoma in 1942 as Claude Russell Bridges. He started piano lessons at age four. After high school, Leon's band, The Starlighters, toured with Jerry Lee Lewis. Leon moved to Los Angeles at age 17, where he began playing in L.A. clubs and then became one of the top session musicians in Hollywood. Leon became part of an elite group of studio musicians called the Wrecking Crew and played on hundreds of hit records in the 1960s.

Leon's first solo album, "Leon Russell", was released in 1970 on his own label, Shelter Records. It included Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Rolling Stones Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, Steve Winwood, Eric Clapton, and Klaus Voorman. The album contained the songs "A Song For You", along with "Hummingbird" and "Delta Lady".

In addition to his solo career, Leon Russell has collaborated with Joe Cocker, Willie Nelson, and George Harrison, among others.

Leon Russell played piano on the Gary Lewis and the Playboys song, "This Diamond Ring", which was co-written by Al Kooper, among others. Apparently the Playboys themselves did not even play their instruments on the track: instead the producer used experienced studio musicians, including Leon Russell. The song reached Number One on Billboard's Hot 100 singles chart in the U.S. in February 1965.
10. And from team member MzzRay2001: Was guitarist Brad Whitford an original member of Aerosmith?

Answer: No

The original band lineup consisted of:
Joe Perry - Guitar
Ray Tabano - Guitar
Tom Hamilton - Bass
Steven Tyler - Vocals
Joey Kramer - Drums

Tabano was a childhood friend of Steven Tyler's. He is the one who designed the famous Aerosmith logo. Tabano and Tyler were in a band called The Strangeurs before joining Aerosmith.

Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford in 1971. Whitford is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and played in a few other Boston-area bands before joining Aerosmith. He left the band in 1981 to work on his own projects, but rejoined Aerosmith in 1984.
