Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I thought I lost you somewhere but you were never really ever there at all."

Answer: Here Is Gone

Though the band's seventh album, "Gutterflower", had fewer official singles than "Dizzy Up the Girl" before it, "Here is Gone" helped elevate the album to a high water mark of number four on the Billboard 200 albums chart in the United States, giving the Goo Goo Dolls their highest showing there.

The track itself, perhaps one of their most fully-realized in terms of sound (especially coming out of "Dizzy Up the Girl"), managed to crack the top twenty of the Billboard Hot 100 and show on five other charts in the U.S. alone.
2. "I wanna wake up where you are."

Answer: Slide

With "Iris" as their leading single from "Dizzy Up the Girl", the Goo Goo Dolls launched their album with this track, "Slide", which went platinum in the U.S. and topped four Billboard charts (reaching number four on the Hot 100). A major tonal shift from "Iris", the upbeat pop-contemporary style found here would make it ideal for radio play, pushing it up the ranks for all-time adult alternative listening.

It would, naturally, make its way to their "Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles" disc.
3. "And I don't want the world to see me."

Answer: Iris

Though the band's sixth album, "Dizzy Up the Girl", was released in 1998, "Iris" proved to transcend this popular release, first appearing as part of the soundtrack for the 1998 Nicolas Cage/Meg Ryan film "City of Angels". The track would manage to top charts in Australia, Canada, and the U.S. though it would only reach number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Considered the band's signature song, it would end up going seven times platinum in the U.S. alone.

The "City of Angels" soundtrack wouldn't end the hits there, though. Alanis Morissette's "Uninvited" would manage to continue her massive streak of success in the 1990s due to its inclusion on the record.
4. "You're the only one I ever believed in."

Answer: Let Love In

Released as a promotional track for their eighth album (also called "Let Love In"), this track managed to get a fair bit of attention in the U.S. and Canada, appearing on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles at number one in the former and peaking at number four on the Adult Contemporary chart in the latter.

It would mark the beginning of the end of the band's decade-long hold on the charts. A small handful of their subsequent singles would show on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart and several Adult Contemporary charts, but they wouldn't hit mainstream popularity on later albums.
5. "A thousand other boys could never reach you."

Answer: Black Balloon

Though the contents of the song might not be relatable to most listeners (it's about aiding someone with heroin addiction), it ended up being a successful fourth hit single from "Dizzy Up the Girl", releasing to radios in mid-1999. Though it wouldn't hit the heights of "Iris" and "Slide" before it, it would receive more attention that the band's preceding single, "Dizzy", which didn't make it to the Billboard Hot 100. "Black Balloon" would, however, hitting number sixteen.

It would appear higher on the Adult Top 40 and Adult Contemporary charts in the U.S. and even higher in Canada.
6. "A tired song keeps playing on a tired radio."

Answer: Name

By the time the Goo Goo Dolls' breakthrough hit, "Name", made it to the radio they'd already had four albums released. Their fifth, "A Boy Named Goo", started them on the road to adult contemporary stardom in the 1990s. The album would go multi-platinum in the United States while "Name" would peak at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 (and show in the top ten on seven U.S. charts all said and done).

The song is said to be about Kennedy, then an MTV VJ personality.
7. "And you can't see when all your dreams are coming true."

Answer: Sympathy

Though never released as an official single from "Gutterflower" (2002), the band's "Sympathy" track reached number ten on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart in the U.S. and managed to go gold, a feat that their second single from the album, "Big Machine", failed to achieve.

Not only was the song used as part of the soundtrack for "A Cinderella Story" (2004), but it made it onto the track list for their "Greatest Hits Volume One: The Singles" album in 2007.
8. "'Cause tonight's the night the world begins again."

Answer: Better Days

The first track for the band off their eighth studio album, "Let Love In" (released in 2006), "Better Days" bucked the expectation of most pop songs by centring its lyrics around Christmas, partly because the track was expected for a promotional Christmas album.

Despite this, the song went platinum in the U.S. and hit number thirty-six on the Billboard Hot 100 (and number three on the Adult Top 40). In 2020, the band included the song on their Christmas album, "It's Christmas All Over", which was comprised of covers and holiday tracks written during the COVID-19 pandemic.
9. "See the young man sittin' in the old man's bar, waitin' for his turn to die."

Answer: Broadway

The fifth and final single to be released from "Dizzy Up the Girl", "Broadway" had chart success in Canada and the U.S. but failed to make many waves outside of North America, closing out the band's promotional work for their sixth album. The only track from the disc to gain any traction in the early 2000s, "Broadway" would peak at number twenty-four on the Billboard Hot 100 and help them bridge the gap until their subsequent album, "Gutterflower", which would release two years later in 2002.
10. "And I want a moment to be real."

Answer: I'm Still Here

Although not featuring the full band, Johnny Rzeznik was the writer and performer of this key track from the "Treasure Planet" official soundtrack released, coincidentally considering the release of "Gutterflower", in 2002. Written to be the theme for main character Jim Hawkins, the track ended up garnering significant radio play, but it couldn't reach the heights of the Goo Goo Dolls' other single of the day, "Here is Gone".

The film's creators eagerly chose Rzeznik to create the song because they felt he best conveyed the Hawkins' attitude.
