Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it. I don't know where we went wrong, But the feelin's gone And I just can't get it back. Which Gordon Lightfoot song, from a re-named album of the same name, do these lyrics come from? (I'd never be able to have any secrets)

Answer: If You Could Read My Mind

This is one of Gord's most personal songs. In 1963 he married a Swedish girl named Brita in Sweden and by 1969 the marriage was over. The song reflects the depth of emotional turmoil caused by the breakup. Over 40 years later it remains a standard at all of his concerts.
2. "Now will you try and tell us, you been too long at school, That knowledge is not needed, that power does not rule, That war is not the answer, that young men should not die, Sit down young stranger, I wait for your reply." What's the name of this song in which Gordon Lightfoot croons about the psychological torment of Vietnam veterans? (please take a chair)

Answer: Sit Down Young Stranger

Yet another Lightfoot song that addressed the psychological torment a family suffers because of war. Gord was much less public about his 'protest songs', yet the powerful lyrics make the song's subject apparent. "Sit Down Young Stranger " is an emotionally profound anti-Vietnam ballad.
3. "The streets of Motor City now are quiet and serene, But the shapes of gutted buildings strike terror to the heart, And you say how did it happen and you say how did it start? Why can't we all be brothers, why can't we live in peace? But the hands of the have-nots keep falling out of reach." What title did Gordon Lightfoot give to this powerful ballad? (about the 1967 Detroit race riots that came on a dark day in the summer)

Answer: Black Day In July

"Black Day In July" was certainly an appropriate title for this song which not only was banned from airplay in the U.S., but drew the ire of the Lyndon Johnson administration. Another great protest song from Gord, which seemed to be the order of the day for many musical artists looking for a following from the anti-war, injustice hating youth of the era.

Fact: The riot started when Detroit police attempted to shut down an after hours party that was being held to welcome back two coloured soldiers from Vietnam.
4. "The morning after blues from my head down to my shoes, ________ highway, let me slip away, slip away on you." What did Gordon Lightfoot call the 'easygoing' highway he was wishing to "slip away" on?

Answer: Carefree

Gord found the inspiration for "Carefree Highway" while travelling in a rental car through Arizona on the road with the same name. He wrote down the lyrics during a rest stop on a piece of paper and put it in the glove box. After taking the car back, he forgot it was there but quickly returned to get it.

A great song for anyone who has ever stood beside a lonesome road with their thumb out and a lost love on their heart and mind.
5. "I ain't got nothing to give, My life is an endless climb. My love's a paperback dream, I don't have nothing but time. I ain't got a thing to show, I don't know my own name, So don't go fooling around, And set my wheels aflame." Gordon Lightfoot had hit a very difficult low point in his personal life and this song clearly reflects that when he describes his life as a/an "________ Wire". Which 'neverending' word fills the blank at the beginning of this song title?

Answer: Endless

One of Gord's most psychologically, emotion-revealing songs, the 1978 version of "Endless Wire" was described by Lightfoot as "one of his most embarrassing recordings" because he was severely inebriated at the time of its recording. It was evident now that Gord had severe problems with substance abuse, especially alcohol. Yet, his fans never held him accountable for his erring ways because so many of them identified with Gord's innermost issues, in a deeply personal and caring way.

He re-recorded it for "Gord's Gold Volume 2", yet the consensus among his fans is that this version is the best because of the unspoken kinship that his true fans shared with him. I'm ecstatic to report that Gord has been 'dry' now for almost three decades.
6. "Is there someone sewing seams, Through all my hopes, through all my dreams? You know living a life of ease, Don't make your meals taste better, if you please." What is the title of this lyrically profound song written by Gordon Lightfoot? (we all need this kind of person in our lives)

Answer: Someone To Believe In

From the 1983 album "Salute", Gord gives us another personal look into the emotions of his psyche with "Someone To Believe In". Barely 12 months into his path to sobriety, it's obvious that the skeletons of his psychological closet are still escaping through his music, which is evident in the deeply truthful songline, "You know living a life of ease don't make your meals taste better, if you please." It's a powerful ballad that cries of the need for acceptance and trust we all experience. "Salute" was Gord's first album where he used an electric guitar on some of his recordings.
7. "Big Blue had fifty wives and he sired forty sons, Though most of them fell victim to the cruel harpoon guns. Ah, but he was too much wise to get caught by the gunner's eyes And so he lived at sea a hundred years." The lyrics shown are from the song "Ode To Big Blue". Which ocean creatures, that have ever dwindling numbers, was Gordon Lightfoot singing about?

Answer: whales

Gord wasn't shy to let his feelings be known on many worldly issues, including animal rights. The song, "Ode To Big Blue", tells a tale about a humongous blue whale he's named "Big Blue", that, by the scars on his back, had heroically escaped thousands of whaler's harpoons. "Big Blue" goes on to live 100 years and dies of old age. Lightfoot, not a fanatical animal rights activist, still has lent his name to the efforts of several animal rights groups.
8. "So take the best of all that's left, You know this cannot last, Even though your mother was your maker, From her apron strings you pass. Just think about the fool, Who by his virtue can be found, In a most unusual situation, Playin' jester to the clown." What's the name of this melody that Gordon Lightfoot is lending his poetic justice to? (Gord's not singing about a speed competition)

Answer: Race Among The Ruins

The 'race' Gord was alluding to was the way one might contemplate their life and all its ups and downs. Another line in the song goes "Even though the sun shines down upon you now sometimes you must feel blue", which once again, lends Gord's style of poetic justice to a song that his fans can identify with once again. "Race Among The Ruins" is the first cut from "Summertime Dream", his biggest selling album ever in Canada where it went double platinum.(200,000 copies sold)
9. "Longest street in the world they say, Summertime soon slips away.. I hope I'll see you one fine day, on _____ Street." Gordon Lightfoot is singing about a street that starts in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is the longest in the world. What's the name, that fills the blank, of this famous street?

Answer: Yonge

At 1,896 kms(1,178 miles), Yonge street in Toronto, Canada is the longest street in the world according to "The Guinness Book of World Records". The song "On Yonge Street" comes from his 1998 release, "A Painter Passing Through". Since Gord had spent over over four decades calling Toronto his home, he felt it was time he dedicated a song to the city by singing about its beautiful main street.
10. "Soon the storm will be over, And the clouds will all pass by. To be insane beyond belief, Is sometimes the best relief. And one thing sure, Love never did come easy. Even the best of dreams must end, Even so it grieves me." Despite the feelings this refrain might conjure up, Gord gives the listener some good advice in the title of the song about what one should do when feeling sad and grieved over love. What's the advice, which is also the song's title, that Lightfoot gives? (better than getting wound up)

Answer: Stay Loose

It's hard to "Stay Loose" when one's heart is grieved over loves lost. After Gord recorded "Salute" in 1983, he decided to take a few years to work on an album that was to become "East of Midnight", released in 1986. "Stay Loose" was the opening song on the album and it sets a truly dreamy mood for the rest of it, which he recorded and wrote entirely in Canada.
