Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In September 2002, Gordon Lightfoot fans were shocked to hear he had fallen seriously ill. He was in a coma for six weeks and on life support for much of the time. What serious medical issue almost took Gord away from his loving fans? (over 90% of people die from these)

Answer: ruptured aortic aneurysm

Despite three major surgeries during his time in the coma, Gord's loved ones and fans were relieved that he survived the rupture of his aorta, the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the body. He woke up after being in a deep coma for six weeks, with no recollection of anything from that time.

He was back writing music and planning a return to the stage soon after waking up, albeit from the hospital where he was a patient for over three months.
2. Gordon Lightfoot nearly lost his life in September 2002; the illness seriously affected one of his senses for over five months. Because of his career in music, it was almost as terrifying for the singer as the aneurysm itself. Which neurological sense did he temporarily lose? (it's the one sense his fans couldn't bear losing)

Answer: hearing

How could his fans enjoy Gord's music if he couldn't hear it? Despite his intense efforts to work despite having his hearing badly affected, Gord truly thought his music career was over. His doctors tried to reassure him constantly that they felt it was temporary. Thank God for him and for his loving followers, his hearing ability slowly returned over several months, and he was back in the studio by mid-2003 working on his next release.
3. Despite several brushes with death after falling ill in September 2002, it took Gordon Lightfoot only 21 months from the day he fell ill to release another excellent album, his 20th album. What is the name of that album?

Answer: Harmony

"Harmony", released in May 2004, was Gord's 20th original album. The theme of the album, like so many songs before it, deal with the seemingly repetitive pattern in Gord's life of 'loves lost', and the pain he is feeling from the departure of his beloved when he was so desperately ill and needed her most.

It's a testament to the inner strength and desire of the man to continue dedicating his life to his music, and thereby, his appreciative fans.
4. Gordon Lightfoot's 20th album was released in June 2002. Its theme is about 'loves lost' and the sorrow Gord carries in his heart due to the woman who left him when he needed her most. Yet, he recorded a song on the album that talks of the positive effect she had on his life. What is the flattering title of the song he dedicates to her?

Answer: Inspiration Lady

"Inspiration Lady" is the title of the beautiful melody Gord dedicates to the mother of his young daughter. After so many relationships in Gord's past that ended up in divorce and falling apart, he truly felt he had finally met the woman he would spend the rest of his life with. Sadly, it was not to be. Nevertheless, this resilient and dedicated man has made a great success as a single father and capably combines his music career with parenthood.
5. Gord's Gold Volume 2 gave us 18 re-recorded hits from his career. One of the songs he included was one that he had recorded while under the strong influence of alcohol. He had always disliked the original version and was more than happy that he re-recorded it while sober. Which song title, from a 1978 album of the same name, are we looking for? (I sure hope FunTrivia players aren't worried my quizzes might be like the 1st word of the song)

Answer: Endless Wire

The album "Endless Wire" gave Gord's fans a song of the same name that delved deeply into the personal pain he was going through because of substance abuse. So difficult was the subject of the song, that Gord needed to 'numb' his senses to be able to record it, yet the drive to record it was greater than the embarrassment he suffered from the knowledge that he was drunk while recording it.

Interestingly enough, the majority of Gord's loyal followers will tell you that despite the 'faux pas' of "Endless Wire's" first recording, they like it more than the second cut. Probably, because at a personal level, so many of his listeners could truly identify with the profound theme of the song.
6. "Shadows", an album Gordon Lightfoot recorded in 1982, produced a song from which Gord made one of his few music videos. The opening refrain goes: "Now it looks to me like the same old place, In the sky it looks like rain. The same old town with the same old streets, My address has not changed. You can find me there with the door shut tight, And the one wish that remains.." The next lines are the chorus and they're the same as the song's title. What does the title of this song-to-video tell a certain someone to do?

Answer: Baby Step Back

He tells this someone, "Baby Step Back". The video appeared on MTV Canada soon after the release of "Shadows" and was filmed mostly in black and white with a somber western theme to it. Despite the video release, the song didn't make the top 100 and the album only reached #87 on the Billboard charts. It took a few years, yet "Shadows" reached Gold status in Canada nonetheless.
7. Another song from Gordon Lightfoot's "Shadows" album, 'loosely' tells a tale about sailing in a very mysterious area in one of the earth's bodies of water. Many strange tales abound about this place where ships and boats of all sizes, aircraft, and people seemingly "disappear without a trace". Read the hint and tell me the name of this mysterious place which Gord is singing a tale about? (the name of the song is the same as a geometric figure)

Answer: The Bermuda Triangle

The song "Triangle" was actually more about sailing in the vicinity of the Bermuda Triangle, than it was about the many odd things that occurred there. Gord has always been a lover of being on the water and has recorded many songs about sailors and sailing and boats and ships, "Triangle" being one of them. So when listening to the song, don't expect to hear scary tales of disappearing people and ghost ships in the mist, but it does talk of the islands that make up the infamous Bermuda "Triangle".
8. Gordon Lightfoot's hit song, "If You Could Read My Mind", is covered by a famous country singer on a CD that went number one on the Billboard charts and the country music charts. Which famous country singer, also known as "The Man in Black", covered Gord's song on his CD that hit number one?

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black", passed away in 2003 and had recorded Gord's song just a few months before his death and appears on Johnny's album "America V: A Hundred Highways". It isn't the first Lightfoot song that Cash recorded, having done "Early Morning Rain" and "For Lovin' Me", in the 70's both on record and in concert.
9. Despite his enormous success, Gordon Lightfoot has only one official video recording of one of his live concerts. The venue is called the "Pioneer Theater". In what western U.S. city did Lightfoot record his only live concert video? (hang onto your money tightly here)

Answer: Reno

It's a wise idea to "hold onto your money tightly" in Reno! Atlantic City was a choice and would fit the clue, but let's remember, the question said it was a "western city", right? Got ya!

"Gordon Lightfoot Live In Reno" was recorded and released in April, 1990. Many Canadian fans wondered, and were sincerely disappointed, that Gord didn't choose a Canadian venue to record a live concert. His lifelong love of Old Massey Hall in Toronto Canada, is the first place his fans would have expected it to happen, yet Gord never shared the reason why he didn't do the recording there. Part of the concert was later presented all over North America as a television special and included 14 of the 22 songs from the video.
10. In 1972, Gordon Lightfoot's promising recording career looked like it had come to a shocking end when he was struck with a career threatening disorder. He immediately curtailed his concert tour and entered into physical therapy. What was the name of the disorder that had Gord seriously thinking his singing career was over? (*not the 'cerebral' variety, it also afflicts former Canadian leader, Jean Chretien, as well as actors George Clooney, Pierce Brosnan, and WWE commentator Jim Ross)

Answer: Bell's palsy

It was early 1972, when Gordon Lightfoot woke up with one side of his face paralyzed. Suffering facial numbness, unable to open one side of his mouth, and the inability to blink or close one eye, he raced to his doctor's office and was given a diagnosis of "Bell's Palsy".

He obviously thought his career was over as this affliction is incurable and lifelong. The only thing to do was to enter into a regimen of intense physical therapy, injections, and medication, in hopes to stop the disease's advancement and hopefully salvage what has become a fantastic musical career. Gord took this situation extremely seriously, and obviously, the treatments worked. Gord was back singing in a limited role very soon after the diagnosis, and two years later put out one of his most loved albums, "Sundown".
