Pat Benatar was born Patricia Mae Andrzejewski in New York City in 1953. She recorded her debut album "In the Heat of the Night" in 1979. Her 1983 hit single "Love is a Battlefield" is her only number one hit single in between 1979 and 2020.

The great Stevie Nicks was born Stephanie Lynn Nicks in 1948 in Phoenix, Arizona. Well known for being one of the vocalists for the American/ British band Fleetwood Mac, she was also nominated for Grammy Awards eight separate times between 1982 and 2002 for her solo career.

Joan Jett (b. Joan Marie Larkin), founder of the fab group the Runaways and then Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, was born in Pennsylvania in 1958. Her signature song "Bad Reputation", has featured in multiple films, adverts and television series and was used as entrance music by UFC and WWE bad girl, Ronda Rousey.

Christine Ellen Hynde was born in 1951 in Akron, Ohio. Founding member and lead vocalist of the band The Pretenders once asked both Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols to marry her. She almost married Ray Davies of The Kinks, but eventually got married to Jim Kerr from Simple Minds.

Kim Carnes was born in Los Angeles in 1945. She released thirteen albums from 1971 to 2004, but had prolific success with the song "Bette Davis Eyes" which won a Grammy Award in 1982 for "Record of the Year". It spent nine weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Karen Anne Carpenter was born in 1950 in New Haven, Connecticut. She and her brother Richard formed The Carpenters and had a slew of number one singles through the years. Some of their popular songs are "(They Long to Be ) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun".

Debbie Harry was born Angela Trimble in 1945 in Miami, Florida. Vocalist for the awesome band Blondie, she had great success as a solo artist as well. The 1981 song "Rapture" was the first top single on the charts to feature rap vocals.

Tracy Chapman was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1964. Winner of four Grammy awards between 1989 and 1997, she is well known for her hits "Fast Car", "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution" and "Baby Can I Hold You", all from her chart topping eponymous debut album.

Margaret LeAnn Rimes was born in 1982 in Jackson, Mississippi. She released her first album at the tender age of nine and released a further sixteen albums between 1994 and 2022. Her best charting song in this time period was "Can't Fight the Moonlight", the theme song for the 2000 film "Coyote Ugly".

Fiona Apple McAfee-Maggart was born in New York City in 1977. She released five studio albums between 1996 and 2020 and in this time she has won a total of 22 various music awards out of a spectacular 34 nominations. She has won the Grammy multiple times, the Billboard Music Video Award and the California Music Award amongst others.


Of the remaining singers, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Petula Clark, Kate Bush and Duffy were all born in the United Kingdom and Terri Clark, Joni Mitchell, Nelly Furtado, Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain were all born in Canada.
