Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The title to this quiz, 'Cold as Fire, Hot as Ice', was in a song by this Mississippi-born, former Mickey Mouse club singer (and actress). In keeping with enigmatic titles in her work, whose second album was 'Oops... I Did it Again'?

Answer: Britney Spears

Britney Spears, born in 1981, started performing at the age of three but was initially rejected from the Mickey Mouse Club for being too young. She enrolled in the Professional Performing Arts School in New York. After a series of TV commercials she made it into the Mickey Mouse Club at the second attempt.

She commenced her musical career in 1997 and success followed very quickly, with her first album 'Baby One More Time' debuting at number one on the US charts and going double platinum after only one month.

The lyric 'Cause I'm cold as fire, baby, hot as ice' came from the song 'Cold as Fire' on the 'Blackout' album released in October 2007.
2. Which chanteuse, the daughter of a very famous blue-eyed singer, sang the intimidating line 'one of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you'?

Answer: Nancy Sinatra

Nancy Sandra Sinatra, the daughter of Frank Sinatra and his first wife, Nancy Barbato, was born in June 1940. Although probably still best known for her "don't mess around with this girl" song 'These Boots Are Made for Walkin'' in 1966, she also had success with 'Sugar Town' and the 1967 number one hit 'Something Stupid', which was a duet with her father.

She also made several appearances in a range of 1960s US TV shows and several 'Beach' movies.
3. Without knowing the rest of the song, 'Man! I Feel Like a Woman!' has several possible connotations. This song was the seventh single from the 1997 album 'Come on Over'. By what name is this Canadian singer, Eileen Edwards, better known to the world?

Answer: Shania Twain

The film clip for this song is a role reversal of Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love' where the female singer (Twain) is wearing a long formal coat, shirt and tie and top hat and the 'backing band' of male mock guitarists are in skintight tops and black leather pants. The song is about girls wanting to go out and have a little fun.
4. 'Government Hooker' is an up-tempo song performed by Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. Her other works include 'Poker Face', 'LoveGame' and 'Bad Romance'. So by what name does the world know this lady who was 'Born This Way'?

Answer: Lady Gaga

Written by Lady Gaga, Fernando Garibay and DJ White Shadow, this raunchy track off the album 'Born This Way' features a voice over by Lady Gaga's bodyguard, Pete. She revealed by twitter that the song reflects on political mistresses, including Marilyn Monroe.
5. Perhaps one female bass player who can explain the title of her second single, 'Can the Can', is the same lady who had a '48 Crash' down in 'Devil Gate Drive'! Who was this 'Glycerine Queen' who also was a 'Leather Tuscadero'?

Answer: Suzi Quatro

Born in 1950, Susan Kay (Suzi) Quatro started her musical career as a bass player in all female bands. At the behest of producer Mickie Most, she moved to England in 1971 and came into contact with prolific songwriters and producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman.

Her second single 'Can the Can' was a number one hit in Europe and Australia but did not fare as well in the USA. Further success (gold records) came with 'Devil Gate Drive', '48 Crash' and 'Daytona Demon'. Her hard-rocking style mellowed in the 1980s where she had world-wide success with 'Stumblin' In' - a duet with Chris Norman (from the band Smokie).

She also became a regular on the TV series 'Happy Days', where she played the former juvenile delinquent and bass player, Leather Tuscadero.

In her role as Leather, Quatro performed a number of her own songs including an interesting version of 'Cat Size'.
6. A slight change on a common expression in the marriage ceremony, 'To Have and Not to Hold' was recorded by a mononymous performer who has been in 'Vogue' as well as requesting that no tears are shed for her in Buenos Aires. Who is this 'Material Girl'?

Answer: Madonna

Michigan born, Madonna Louise Ciccone has received a large number of accolades for her innovative, and at times, provocative work which has dealt with fame, feminism, sex and religion (and many other subjects). She has been listed by the Guinness Book of Records as the best selling female artist of all time, with record sales in excess of 300 million, placing her in the same company as The Beatles, Queen, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson and Led Zeppelin.
7. 'The Shoop Shoop Song' was a hit when recorded by Betty Everett in 1964. However it became a massive number one international hit for singer and actress Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1991. By what name is she more commonly known?

Answer: Cher

'The Shoop Shoop Song' is perhaps better known by the lines 'If you want to know if he loves you so. It's in his kiss'. Cher has had great success and even more remarkably, incredible longevity in the musical business with hit singles in six successive decades staring with her duet with then-partner Sonny Bono 'I've Got You' in 1965.

In addition to her music, Cher is a highly accomplished actress starring in films including 'Silkwood' (nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, 1983) 'Mask', 'The Witches of Eastwick', and 'Moonstruck' (Academy Award, Best Actress, 1988).
8. 'No, I do not Regret Anything' (in French 'Non, je ne regrette rien') is more of a bold, clear statement than a riddle. This singer with the powerful, evocative voice also recorded 'The Life in Pink' ('La Vie En Rose') and 'My God' ('Mon Dieu') and many other wonderful songs. By what name is this "Little Sparrow" best known?

Answer: Edith Piaf

'Non, je ne regrette rien' was written by Charles Dumont and Michel Vaucaire in 1956, with Edith Piaf's famous version recorded in 1960. Many think that the title refers to Piaf's own tumultuous and tragic life, but she dedicated the song to the French Foreign Legion.

The FFL were engaged in a series of battles at that time in Algeria. The song became a favorite in the FFL ranks and is often sung when they are on parade. The song has also featured in many TV commercials and films including playing a critical plot role in 2010's 'Inception'.
9. A babooshka (or babushka) is normally a Russian word referring to a grandmother or old lady. But which ethereal singer took 'Babooshka' to 'Wuthering Heights' in 1980?

Answer: Kate Bush

'Babooshka' was from Kate Bush's album 'Never for Ever'. The single had reasonable success in the UK and reached number one in Australia. According to Bush (from an interview on the Australian music show 'Countdown'), the song is about a suspicious wife testing the fidelity of her husband by sending notes and then appearing as a younger woman dressed in supposedly Russian garb.

This alternates with Bush draped in a black bodysuit and veil (the grieving wife). I'm glad this was explained as I had no idea what the song nor the video were about at that time! Apparently Bush was unaware of the meaning of 'babushka' when writing the song.
10. Returning to the enigmatic title of this quiz, which American diva sang 'Hot n Cold', a song apparently about an ex-boyfriend? On the same album, this singer also admitted to kissing a girl.

Answer: Katy Perry

'Hot n Cold' was the second successful single off Perry's debut mainstream album 'One of the Boys' ('I Kissed a Girl' was the first). It is about a relationship with a man who suffered bipolar mood swings, hence the antonyms used in the chorus: 'Cause you're hot then you're cold, You're yes then you're no, You're in then you're out, You're up then you're down'. Perry was born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson in California in 1984.

She started performing as Katy Hudson but changed to Perry (her mother's maiden name) to avoid confusion with actress Kate Hudson.
