Madonna is in fact her real name - I always thought it was a stage name. She was christened Madonna Louise Cicconi. Her date of birth is 16 August 1958, which is the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley.

'Live To Tell' was a hit around the world, still achieving number one in her home county. It was her first release from the album 'True Blue' and released in 1986.

Madonna has been married twice, firstly to Sean Penn from Aug 1985 to Sept 1989 and then to Guy Ritchie from Dec 2000 to Nov 2008. Her marriage to Penn was doomed due to his violence. She had a relationship with Carlos Leon, who was her fitness instructor, for three years ending in Sept 1997. Madonna and Leon had a daughter Lourdes who was born in Oct 1996. She then went on to marry Guy Richie in Dec 2000; they had a son together, Rocco, born in August 2000, and they also adopted a son, David Banda. Since the split she has adopted another child, a girl called Mercy James.

'Express Yourself' was taken from the album 'Like A Virgin'. It was released in 1989 and was a top ten in every singles chart.

Madonna's second adoption of Mercy, also from Malawi, saw more resistance than her adoption of David. Mercy was living in an orphanage when she was spotted by Madonna. There has been a lot of controversy over this adoption and it was taken to the high courts.

'Rescue Me' released in 1991 and taken from her compilation album 'The Immaculate Collection'. It did well in all the charts but reached the top ten in the US, the UK and Canada.

Madonna has starred in many films, including 'Desperately Seeking Susan', 'Evita', 'A League Of Their Own', the James Bond Film 'Die Another Day' and 'Shanghai Surprise'. The latter was a film which starred Madonna alongside her husband at the time, Sean Penn.

'Vogue' released in 1990, was taken from the album 'Breathless'. It was a top ten hit in all the charts, and reached number one in seven of them. The song was a tribute to some classic Hollywood celebrities including James Dean, Grace Kelly and Marilyn Monroe.

Madonna published a coffee book table titled 'Sex' which was a best seller! It contained images of Madonna which are considered to be soft porn. Later she released another coffee book table titled 'The Girlie Show'.
In 2003 her journey of writing children's books began. Her first was 'The English Roses' which was the biggest and fasting selling children's book from a first time children's author. She has since written many many more.

'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' was a hit from the 1996 musical film 'Evita'. The film starred Madonna as the main character Eva Peron. The recording of the film was set in two locations, Buenos Aires and Budapest. The song was sung by Eva Peron as she addressed the crowds from the balcony at Casa Rosada (Government House of Argentina).

Released in 1985, 'Crazy For You' was one of two hits taken from the album 'Vision Quest'; the other was 'Gambler'. The song reached one in the US and two in the UK singles charts.

Madonna named her daughter Lourdes in memory of her mother who died of cancer. Her mother had wanted to visit Lourdes in France but died before doing so. Madonna claims that losing her mother was the hardest thing she has ever had to face and still struggles with the loss today.
Madonna also dedicated her song 'Little Star' to her daughter Lourdes.
