Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Madonna's first album was released in July of 1983. What is the name of Madonna's first album?

Answer: Madonna

"Madonna" was Madonna's first album. The album was simply self-titled. In 1984 or 1985, the album was re-released in Europe with the title, "The First Album". I have heard that in late 1982, after the success of Madonna's very first single, "Everybody", (which was included on the album), Madonna was scheduled to release the first album under the name, "Lucky Star".

The album's front and back covers even had different photos. But the release held until July of 1983, since Madonna decided to use different photos, and change the album's name to simply, "Madonna".
2. In 1984, Madonna released her second album. What is the name of her second album?

Answer: Like A Virgin

"Like A Virgin" was Madonna's second album to be released. The album went straight to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 200 in the US during late 1984, early 1985. The album's title track, "Like A Virgin", was the album's first single, and it was the first single from Madonna to go to number one in the US. "Into The Groove", was never a part of the album's tracklisting, until it was re-released in 1985 in parts of Europe.
3. In 1986, Madonna released her third album entitled, "True Blue", an album that showed Madonna in her first round of re-invention of style and sound, not to mention the actual change in her voice. Five singles were released from the album. But how many of those five singles went straight to the number one spot in the US?

Answer: Three

Three out of five of the album's singles went right to the number one spot and they are: "Live To Tell" (the first single from the album), "Papa Don't Preach" (the second single from the album), and "Open Your Heart" (the fourth single from the album), with "True Blue" (the album's title track and third single) reaching number three and "La Isla Bonita" (the fifth and final single from the album) reaching number four.
4. In 1987, Madonna released her fourth album entitled, "You Can Dance". This album is actually Madonna's first remix album, featuring some of her earlier songs from her first three albums in 12" Club Remix form. There is only one new song from this album, a song that was actually cut from the final "True Blue" song-selection. What is the name of the song?

Answer: Spotlight

"Spotlight", as I stated, was the only new recording for "You Can Dance". "Spotlight was released as a single, but it was only a single in Japan. If you bought "You Can Dance" on vinyl, then the album has only seven songs, which are in this order:

"Spotlight"
"Holiday" (from "Madonna")
"Everybody" (from "Madonna")
"Physical Attraction" (from "Madonna")
"Over And Over" (from "Like A Virgin")
"Into The Groove" (from the film "Desperately Seeking Susan")
"Where's The Party" (from "True Blue")

If you bought the album on CD, you'll those original seven tracks, with the inclusion three songs in Dub Format. The CD tracklisting is as follows:

"Spotlight"
"Holiday" (from "Madonna")
"Everybody" (from "Madonna")
"Physical Attraction" (from "Madonna")
"Over And Over" (from "Like A Virgin")
"Into The Groove" (from the film "Desperately Seeking Susan")
"Where's The Party" (from "True Blue")
"Holiday" (Dub Version)
"Into The Groove" (Dub Version)
"Where's The Party" (Dub Version)

If you bought the album on cassette, then the following tracklist, ten songs, are as follows:

"Spotlight"
"Holiday" (from "Madonna")
"Everybody" (from "Madonna")
"Physical Attraction" (from "Madonna")
"Over And Over" (from "Like A Virgin")
"Into The Groove" (from the film "Desperately Seeking Susan")
"Where's The Party" (from "True Blue")
"Holiday" (Dub Version)
"Into The Groove" (Dub Version)
"Spotlight" (Dub Version)
5. "Like A Prayer" was released in March of 1989 as Madonna's fifth album, an album that made Madonna an even bigger star, as well as sex symbol. How many singles did Madonna release from this album?

Answer: Six

Six singles were released from this album, and they are as follows:

"Like A Prayer" (the album's first single and title track)
"Express Yourself" (the album's second single)
"Cherish" (the album's third single)
"Oh Father" (the album's fourth single)
"Dear Jessie" (the album's fifth single)
"Keep It Together" (the album's sixth & final single)

"Like A Prayer", the single I mean, is Madonna's seventh number one hit single in the US, with the sixth number one US hit being, "Who's That Girl". The video caused controversy, showing Madonna making love with an African-American Catholic Saint (played by actor Leon), showing Madonna imitating the Stigmata (wounds inflicted by an unseen force, showing the wounds of the crucified Christ), and Madonna dancing in a nighttime field, with Burning Crucifixes in the back of her.

"Express Yourself" reached the number two spot in the US, with a controversial video, where Madonna is featured as the female boss of an all-male employed factory that is designed to look similar to the film, "Metropolis", where in one scene, Madonna's steals the spotlight by grabbing her, "You-Know-What".

"Dear Jessie", although complete with a cute animated music video, was the only single from the album that was released in Europe and other countries, but not in the US.
6. Madonna's first album of the 1990s was the album "I'm Breathless". What movie inspired this album?

Answer: Dick Tracy

"Dick Tracy" it is. This album, which is a Madonna-recorded album, is not the soundtrack to the movie, but does include three songs that were featured in the movie and they are: "Sooner Or Later" (performing the song in a light orchestrated pop version and later performing the song as it is on the album), "More" (in a more Jazz/Pop version)", and "What Can You Lose", an duet between Madonna and actor, Mandy Patinkin (who also starred in the film as the character, 88 Keys).

The other nine songs on the album are Dick Tracy-inspired featuring 1930s Jazz sound. "Vogue" is the only song not featured in the D.T. sound. It was released as the album's first single and went on to become Madonna's eighth U.S. single to go to the number one spot.

Just to point out that, some people happen to think that the "Who's That Girl" soundtrack was Madonna's album, but that is incorrect. That is a soundtrack featuring four songs from Madonna and they are: "Who's That Girl", "Causing A Commotion", "The Look Of Love", and "Can't Stop". "The Look Of Love" was the only Madonna single from this soundtrack to be released in other countries (Europe, etc.), excluding the U.S. The other five songs are by various artists. If this was a Madonna album, then all nine songs would have been sung by Madonna, but she only gave the soundtrack four songs.

The "Evita" soundtrack is treated the same way. "Evita" soundtrack is also not a Madonna album for the same reason "Who's That Girl" isn't.
7. "The Immaculate Collection" was released in the same year as "I'm Breathless". The album was Madonna's first greatest hits compiliation, featuring seventeen songs. The first fifteen are her greatest hits from 1983 to early 1990. The last two are new songs, both of which were released as singles. Those two new songs are, "Justify My Love" and "Rescue Me". Why was the video to "Justify My Love" banned by MTV?

Answer: Too sexually explicit

This song is about sex, where Madonna wanted a matching visual. The video showed the sexual interactions between Madonna and her then-boyfriend, Anthony "Tony" Ward, as well other sexual interactions between Gays, Lesbians, Dominatrixes, and Sado Masochists.

The video was banned by MTV, with no argument from Madonna, for she explained that, "...A lot of the graphic scenes in this video are not meant for children. So, if this has to be done, then I agree 100%. But this is where I am at in my career". Knowing fans would want to see the video, Sire Records released the video on VHS, making it the first VHS Single to be released...ever.

The video helped the single become Madonna's ninth number one hit in the U.S.
8. "Erotica" was the next album to be released in Madonna. Released in October of 1992, "Erotica" spawned six singles, and they are: "Erotica", "Deeper And Deeper", "Bad Girl", "Fever", "Rain" and "Bye Bye Baby". Only "Fever" and "Bye Bye Baby" were released in Europe and other countries. Which single was to be the second single released from "Erotica"?

Answer: Deeper And Deeper

The chronological release of this album's singles are as follows:

"Erotica"
"Deeper And Deeper"
"Bad Girl"
"Fever"
"Rain"
"Bye Bye Baby"

"Deeper And Deeper", obviously, was performed on Madonna's 1993 concert tour entitled, "The Girlie Show Tour 1993". She used the "David's Klub Mix" of the song to perform on that tour. But on Madonna's 2004 world tour, "The Re-Invention Tour", Madonna dug out "Deeper And Deeper" and decided to perform it again, after not performing it for 11 years. Instead of using the original Disco sound of that song, Madonna broke it down and performed the song as a 1920s smooth Jazz Ballad.

The video to "Erotica" was the second Madonna video to be banned by MTV. But MTV did not ban it completely. They had just banned it from daytime airplay, where it was only allowed airplay during the evening hours, sometime around after midnight, I believe. That is because Madonna displayed her sexual...talents, yet again.
9. In 1994, Madonna released her ninth album that featured the sound of smooth techno R&B/Pop. Four singles were spawned from this album, one of which went straight the number one spot in the US for seven to nine weeks. What is the name of this album?

Answer: Bedtime Stories

"Bedtime Stories" spawned the following four singles:

"Secret"
"Take A Bow"
"Bedtime Story"
"Human Nature"

"Take A Bow" went to the number one spot in the US for seven to nine weeks and was Madonna's eleventh #one hit, with the tenth number one hit being, "This Used To Be My Playground".
10. In 1998, Madonna released her eleventh album entitled, "Ray Of Light" (her tenth album being "Something To Remember", released in 1995). This album was produced by Madonna and William Orbit and it spawned five hit singles. Which was the first single to be released?

Answer: Frozen

"Frozen" made it to the number two spot. The album went straight to the number two spot as well, with the "Titanic" soundtrack conquering the number one spot, with its "unsinkable" hit leading single, "My Heart Will Go On", as performed by Celine Dion.

"Drowned World/Substitute For Love" was released as a single just outside the US for fear critics would misunderstand the meaning of the song and think that Madonna hates fame. Madonna is just stating in her song that she sometimes feels that fame is her "Substitute For Love", whereas her daughter, Lourdes, who was two years of age at the time, was her real love. The video supported the song and the song ended up being on Madonna's 2001 album, "GHV2 Greatrest Hits Volume 2"
11. In 2000, Madonna released her twelfth album, but her first album of the new millennium. This album featured the new club techno sound of the new millennium, whereas Madonna was featured in the New Millennium Urban Cowboy Pimpette look. What is the name of this album?

Answer: Music

The album spawned three hit singles and they are:

"Music"
"Don't Tell Me"
"What It Feels Like For A Girl"

"Music", the single, was Madonna's twelfth number one hit single in the US. In the video, Madonna was actually five or six months pregnant with her son, Rocco. I know, Madonna "KNOWS" how to hide it well. Because she was pregnant, she was not able to do the action scene that is actually animated. She wanted that scene to be in the video so much. Someone came to her with the idea of having that scene animated and Madonna immediately agreed. She had said that she always wanted to see what she looked like animated.

"What It Feels Like For A Girl" was the third video to be banned by MTV and VH1. This time, Madonna did not show any sexually explicit scenes. No, this video showed us a side of Madonna no one has ever seen before. I mean no one, not even her idiotic critics. This side of Madonna was...Violent. The song explains how girls are not allowed to do certain things just because they are girls. Madonna is trying to state something, that girls have just as much power to do the same things as men. She wanted to show that message by having a matching video.

For the song's video, Madonna did not use the original album version, which is sort of a mid-tempo ballad. Madonna has about nine different remixes for this song that are featured on the song's single release. Madonna had chosen the "Above And Beyond 12" Club Mix" of the song for the video in order to make the video seem more violent, as she crashes into cars, runs over hockey players, and electrically shocks men, as they are standing at an ATM vestibule.
12. In 2003, Madonna released her fourteenth album entitled, "American Life", with the thirteenth album being "GHV2 Greatest Hits Volume 2". This album still features club techno music, but that sound was given a Military edge. Madonna is featured in Military outfits. The album spawned four singles. Which of those four singles did not have a music video to support it?

Answer: Nothing Fails

"American Life" has a music video that Madonna, herself, pulled because of the disturbing war images. The war with Iraq was just beginning and Madonna felt that it was not the right time to release the video.

This album's sound, as I said, is still in the Club Techno sound of the new millennium, but the sound of military edginess was added to it, with Madonna taking up the look of a military agent or something. She transformed from Material Girl to Military Girl.
13. In late 2003, Madonna released her fifteenth album. This album turned out to be another remix album, making it her second remix album to date. What is the name of this album?

Answer: Remixed And Revisited

This album features only seven tracks and they are as follows:

"Nothing Fails" (Nevins Mix) (from "American Life")
"Love Profusion" (Headcleanr Rock Mix) (from "American Life")
"Nobody Knows Me" (Mount Sims Old School Mix) (from "American Life")
"American Life" (Headcleanr Rock Mix) (from "American Life")
MEDLEY: "Like A Virgin/Hollywood" (Live from 2003 VMAs)
"Into The Hollywood Groove" (The Passengerz Mix)
"Your Honesty" (Unreleased Song)

The live medley was performed by Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Missy Elliott. Britney Spears arrived on stage, dressed in wedding dress, singing the first verse to "Like A Virgin". Christina came out in the same wedding dress, singing the chorus. The song fades out to the sound of "March Of The Wedding Chimes", where Madonna enters, dressed in a tux and top hat. She sings the first verse to "Hollywood", sings it again, waltzes with Christina and Britney, where they then sing "Hollywood"'s chorus, leading Madonna to sing the first verse again, where she kisses Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, shocking EVERYONE. Missy Elliott then appears, singing a revised verse from her 2002 hit single, "Work It", sort of making this a "Work It" interlude to the medley. She then joins Madonna, Brit, and Chris in singing the rest of "Hollywood". Seems as though Missy Elliott is also a huge fan of Madonna's for she said that it was an honor to be onstage with Madonna.

"Into The Hollywood Groove" was used for Madonna's GAP commercial with good ole Missy. This song is actually a remix of Madonna's song, "Into The Groove". Madonna had re-written the choruses and re-recorded them as well. She took out the original first verse and replaced it with the first verse of "Hollywood", with Missy chiming in to give a brilliant rap. The second verse is untouched for it's the original second verse with Madonna's original vocals.
14. In 2005, Madonna released her sixteenth album entitled, "Confessions On A Dance Floor". This album is strictly all-dance, no ballads. On which song did Madonna sample Donna Summer's hit single, "I Feel Love"?

Answer: Future Lovers

"Hung Up" samples the music from ABBA's 1979 hit single, "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)". "Sorry" samples the baseline to The Jacksons' hit 1980 single, "Can You Feel It", the only song I ever really liked from The Jacksons. "Forbidden Love" is actually the second song of Madonna's to have this title. Madonna now has two different songs with the same name. She has said about the song's title, "If I'm gonna plagiarize somebody, why not plagiarize myself". I thought it was a good point.

This album is much different than "American Life", for on "American Life", Madonna said she was very agitated at what her life was like at that time, which was why the album's lyrics are very personal, with a sound that is sort of an agitated sound. Madonna said that for this album, she just wanted to have fun and wanted people to...Dance. She took casual life happenings and just added a great sound of Disco Of The Future.
15. Which album supported her 2001 concert tour, "The Drowned World Tour"?

Answer: Music

"Music" was the album the tour was promoting, even though the tour was named after the song, "Drowned World/Substitute For Love", which can be found on Madonna's 1998 album, "Ray Of Light". On this tour, Madonna performed more of "Ray Of Light" material and "Music" material than she did her older material. She did song a few of the oldies, like "Holiday", "La Isla Bonita", "Secret", "Human Nature", but it was more so the newer material, since at that time, Madonna felt that she no longer wanted to do her older material. But seems as though she has no problem doing her older material, since she had done so on "The Re-Invention Tour". In fact, Madonna had originally wanted to call her 2004 tour, "The Whores Of Babylon Tour", but her husband, Guy Ritchie, warned that it would get her into trouble. He told her that since she's doing her older material, why not call it "The Re-Invention Tour"? Below are the setlists to both of those tours.
