Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first letter is named after the note positioned on the middle line of the treble clef. Drop down one tone for the second letter. The third and final letter is the name of the major chord consisting of the notes D, F sharp and A.

Answer: Bad

A tone is an interval of two semitones. The semitone that has been skipped in this example is a B flat or A sharp. The major chord is made up of the first third and fifth degrees of scale it is named after.
2. This word is made up of the names of the notes that occupy the spaces in the treble clef stave in ascending order.

Answer: Face

This link is used as a way of remembering the names of the treble clef spaces in early music education. The notes on the lines of the treble clef staff are remembered by taking the first letters of each word of "Every Good Boy Deserves Fruit."
3. This word is a band name beginning with the note name of the first space of a bass clef stave. The middle two notes are an octave apart. The fourth letter can also be written "G double sharp."

Answer: ABBA

Similar to the word "Face" being used to learn the names of the spaces in the treble clef, the spaces on a bass clef stave are learnt taking the first letters the rhyme "All Cows Eat Grass."
4. The first letter of this word is named after the dominant chord in the key of A major. The second letter is the same as the major key signature that contains two sharps.

Answer: Edge

The dominant chord of a key is the name of the fifth chord in a given key signature. The two sharps in the key of D major are F and C sharp.
5. This word has a first letter named after the minor chord consisting of the notes C, E flat and G. The following letter is the relative minor of the first. The final letter has four sharps in the major key signature.

Answer: Cabbage

Seven letters was the longest word I was able to make using only the names of the notes in music. Could you do better?
6. The letters in this word spell out the notes used in an A minor chord.

Answer: Ace

The answer here is the only option where the notes spell out any inversion of a major or minor chord.
7. This word is made up of the names of the first four flats in the order they are added to a key signature.

Answer: Bead

Spelling out the word "BEAD" is an easy method to remember the names of the flats up until the fourth. The method stops working with the addition of the fifth flat which is G.
8. The first letter of this word is the name of the lowest and highest string on a standard guitar. The second and third notes would sound unison if played together.

Answer: Ebb

The names of the strings on a standard guitar from lowest to highest to pitch are E, A, D, G, B and E. The bass guitar has the same arrangement of strings but there are only four. The names are E, A, D and G.
9. Only one of these words has the name of the first sharp added to a key signature as the first letter and the name of the major scale that can be played on the piano using only white keys as the third letter.

Answer: Faced

F sharp is the first that is added in a key signature. Each time a sharp is added, it is four notes away from the last. The C major scale has no flats or sharps in it which is the reason no black keys are needed.
10. Now for the finale! One of the words below has a letter in it that does not match up with the name of any note.

Answer: Hid

Once the notes are written from A to G, they are repeated in a cycle. Each time a letter is reached again, the interval or gap between the notes is called an octave because there have been eight scale steps.
