Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 'rock'-ing '80s gem has lyrics that eventually became synonymous with inspiration and motivation, as well as keeping one's focus on achieving the end result?

Answer: Eye of the Tiger

Survivor's 1982 single "Eye of the Tiger", which was taken from their album of the same name, was the theme song to "Rocky III". During the film, Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) was seen slacking off somewhat, while his rival did the exact opposite.

This display of complacency by Balboa eventually prompted one of his friends to urge him to regain his focus and fire, which the latter referred to as the "Eye of the Tiger". Interestingly, the song's title was originally intended to be "Survival", as the band worried that the "Eye of the Tiger" was (in co-writer Jim Peterik's own words) "too obvious". Like the film itself, the song went on be a success, winning several awards and accolades, including the 1983 Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.

The single also secured the coveted number one spot in countless countries around the world, including the US' Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.
2. It was a lively foursome that set the Eurovision stage alight with this pop-tastic, '70s number, which equates love with a battlefield. Which chart-topping single is this?

Answer: Waterloo

ABBA's "Waterloo" was the first of the band's singles to reach number one in several different countries, and eventually went on to become one of the biggest selling singles of all time. "Waterloo" also won ABBA the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, and its disco-esque sound, along with the band's glitzy costumes and platform shoes soon became a familiar part of the ABBA brand. Taking its name from the place Napoleon was defeated in 1815, the lyrics of "Waterloo" (aptly) equated love with a battle.

As for the picture, in the UK, the toilet is often referred to as the 'loo', hence the link to the song (when taken together with the drops of 'water').
3. This '00s single mentions it all - money, fame, power and the Playboy mansion. But in reality, the song is all about a bunch of wannabes, with Kroeger's band at the helm. Which single is being described here?

Answer: Rockstar

First released in 2006, Nickelback's "Rockstar" took a satirical view of the lifestyle of the rich and famous rock star. Inherently tongue-in-cheek, its lyrics mentioned extravagant luxuries such as "a king size tub" you "can play baseball in" and "a credit card that's got no limit", as well as "a new tour bus full of old guitars" and a "front door key to the Playboy mansion". Unusually, there was no music video made for the single when it was first released, and so it wasn't until 2007 that the "Rockstar" music video made its first appearance. Directed by Dori Oskowitz, the video had a different person or group of people miming every few words of the song, and included many famous faces, including Kiss' Gene Simmons, ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons, Wayne Gretzky, Kid Rock and Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
4. Though this single has no Aladdin's cave, it does have a former Mouseketeer singing solo about passion and self-respect. What is the name of this "magical" chart-topper?

Answer: Genie in a Bottle

Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle" was first released in June 1999, and caused plenty of controversy due to its seemingly sexually-suggestive lyrics. Coupled with the fact that Aguilera was only eighteen years old at the time of its release, "Genie in a Bottle" sparked plenty of debate, though she herself insisted that the song was not about sex, but rather about self-respect. Regardless, the single propelled Aguilera into the limelight, and secured her the top spot on both the US' Billboard Hot 100 and the Mainstream Top 40, and the UK Singles Chart.
5. The artist who sang this song is often criticised for having a Messiah complex, but if his lyrics are to be believed, he wanted nothing more than to "Heal the World". This particular song title is also linked to our world. But what is it?

Answer: Earth Song

Michael Jackson's "Earth Song" was first released in November 1995 and was the third single to be released from his album, "HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I". Its lyrics dealt with environmental concerns and animal welfare, and was accompanied by an extraordinary music video, which (though no exact amount has ever been revealed) reportedly cost quite a princely sum to create.

The single hit the coveted number one spot in several different countries, including the UK, Belgium, Finland, Spain and Switzerland.
6. Despite the authoritative, imperative verb mentioned in its title, this song's lyrics are more of a plea to be quiet. Quietly then ... what's the name of this particular single?

Answer: Don't Speak

"Don't Speak" was the third single to be released from American rock band No Doubt's third album, entitled "Tragic Kingdom". Written by the band's lead singer, Gwen Stefani, the lyrics of the song detail the pain that follows a break up, and is thought to have been written following Stefani's split from fellow No Doubt band-member, Tony Kanal.

The single hit the coveted number one spot in several different countries, including the UK, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, New Zealand and Australia. It was also nominated for two awards at the 1998 Grammy Awards: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals and Song of the Year.
7. This particular song title fuses beauty with lead. I've given you all the ammunition you need, so can you now say what you see in the picture and tell me what title I'm looking for?

Answer: Bullet with Butterfly Wings

"Bullet with Butterfly Wings" was released in October 1995, by American alternative rock band, The Smashing Pumpkins. The lyrics to the song were written by the band's lead singer, Billy Corgan, who went on to claim that they were a joke. Nevertheless, the song did well for the band, and in 1997 earned The Smashing Pumpkins a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance.
8. This "cool" music single was all the rage back in 1990, though time has not been so kind to its singer. With this in mind, what is the name of the single I have visually set out for you in the accompanying picture?

Answer: Ice, Ice Baby

Vanilla Ice's "Ice, Ice Baby" was first released in July 1990, and became the first single by a rapper to hit the top spot in the United States. The single was also nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance (during the 1991 Grammy Awards), but lost out to MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This". Though the single was initially well-received, hitting the number one spot in several countries, over time Vanilla Ice gradually lost his credibility, and eventually became known as a bit of joke.
9. A slice of patriotism is at the heart of this particular single, which has been covered by several different artists over the years. But what is its name?

Answer: American Pie

In 1971, Don McLean's single, "American Pie", which commemorated the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and The Big Bopper, became an instant hit in the US, spending four weeks at the coveted number one spot. Often considered to be McLean's signature song, "American Pie" was incredibly long, so much so that it took over eight minutes to reach the end of the original version of the song.

In 1999, the song was parodied by "Weird Al" Yankovic, a parody that McLean himself gave permission for.

In March 2000, (much to the chagrin of some fans of the original), "American Pie" was covered by Madonna, who also enjoyed success with the single, securing several number one spots in countries around the world.
10. This music single is quite literally a "gem", and if you need more clues then a name synonymous with crimson and wine will lead you to the correct answer. With this in mind, what title is it that I am looking for?

Answer: Ruby

Released in February 2007, the Kaiser Chiefs' "Ruby" was the lead single from their second album, entitled "Yours Truly, Angry Mob". The single proved to be an instant hit, scoring the band their first ever number one, as "Ruby" clinched the top spot in the UK and the Czech Republic.

The band have always claimed that the name "Ruby" is not a reference to anyone specific, with band-member Andrew "Whitey" White making the comment that "It's obviously about something but from our perspective it's not written about anybody.

But if you know someone called Ruby, it's about them. It's honestly that simple."
