10. One of my favourite songs was sung during the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Auckland New Zealand, watched by 83 million people world-wide. Which song is it?

Answer: "Tukua Ahau" - Howard Morrison

"Tukua Ahau" was sung at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in New Zealand. I was privileged to be one of the backing choir, dimly seen behind Sir Howard Morrison. It's a long time favourite in New Zealand. The tune was composed by Franz Lehar in 1909 for his operetta "Gypsy Love". In 1954 Hoani Tuhimata Keepa put Maori words to it.

It was subsequently recorded by Hanna Tatana in 1965; the famous St. Joseph's Girls Choir in 1976 and Sir Howard Morrison in 1989 when Mike Farrell added English lyrics. That year it was voted one of the country's most popular songs at the NZ Music Awards.

Mike Farrell's lyrics:

"Let me be borne on the four winds
Let my heart know the way
Never forget the voice of my land, or one moment of yesterday.
And my love runs deep from within the soul of the land
I'll always remember it's here we belong
I'll never forget my love."

"Aotearoa" was written for Maori Language Week by Stan Walker in 2014 and is still popular today.

Dave Dobbin and Herbs sang "Slice of Heaven" from the animated comedy film, "Footrot Flats". I remember flying from NZ to UK when this song was popular and every single passenger on the plane sang along with the words.

"It's a Wonderful World" a classic now and sung by Louis Armstrong in 1967.
