The 2004 "Left of the Dial" CD Compilation Quiz

When it came out in 2004, this compilation was like a trip down memory lane for me as an adopter of Punk music in 1983 and a lover of New Wave since 1979. This compilation may be a tad obscure, so I will try to provide helpful hints with each question.

Question 1 of 10
1. The compilation came out in 2004, but under which label, widely known for releasing compilations? You might ask a Diceros bicornis for help, but then get out of his way, especially if he is charging! Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The compilation's title, "Left of the Dial", actually had a subtitle. Can you send me a note, telling me which of the choices it was? Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. How about some simple numerics? How many CDs comprise this collection? Ask Suzi Quatro for a hint, even though she is not included in the compilation. Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. I'd like to return to the compilation's name, "Left of the Dial" for a moment. Where did that title come from? I'll understand if you need to bring in a ringer to help you answer this question. Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Having determined the source of the compilation's title, let us consider its inspiration. What does the phrase, "Left of the Dial" allude to? Take a moment to tune in and turn on, but don't drop out on me now! Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Enough background! Let's get into the nitty-gritty which, to me, are the tracks themselves. The compilers certainly weren't shy and included a song by San Francisco's Dead Kennedys. It is a one-sided response by the band to a "hipper/cooler-than-thou" type who was frequenting the early punk scene and suggests that that person take an extended vacation. Put on some makeup and ask Pol Pot for help (if you can find him) in order to name it. Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) made the cut with an homage (?) to a/an (in)famous airplane. Can you tell me the name of this song, which happens to be the name of the plane? You may ask COL Paul Tibbets, Jr. for help on this one. Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. Philadelphia's The Dead Milkmen also made the cut, telling us of a chance encounter with the person of their dreams. No, it wasn't Minnie Pearl, if that is what you were thinking! Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Some of the songs on the compilation are truly haunting. For instance, Bauhaus brought us the news of the demise of a famous horror movie actor and let us know that "the bats have all fled" as a result. Maybe they returned to Hungary. Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. This quiz has been a nightmare! Mob up and tell me who sang "Tell Me When It's Over". Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The compilation came out in 2004, but under which label, widely known for releasing compilations? You might ask a Diceros bicornis for help, but then get out of his way, especially if he is charging!

Answer: Rhino

Rhino Records, a Los Angeles-based company, was founded in 1978 and quickly became known for its compilation albums and later, CDs. The compilers definitely know their business and the liner notes that come with the collections are truly comprehensive.
2. The compilation's title, "Left of the Dial", actually had a subtitle. Can you send me a note, telling me which of the choices it was?

Answer: Dispatches from the '80s Underground

These "dispatches" were a way of weeding out the auslanders in nightclubs. If you knew these songs, you were in, but if not, you were definitely out. It was a very rarified, select group of us that listened to this type of music in the 1980s.
3. How about some simple numerics? How many CDs comprise this collection? Ask Suzi Quatro for a hint, even though she is not included in the compilation.

Answer: Four (4)

It is a four-disc set that encompasses eighty-two (82) tracks! I found it to be entirely worthwhile on its release and I would say that it is still worth procuring.
4. I'd like to return to the compilation's name, "Left of the Dial" for a moment. Where did that title come from? I'll understand if you need to bring in a ringer to help you answer this question.

Answer: A Replacements song

The title was directly lifted from a song by The Replacements, from their album "Tim", but the song itself does NOT appear on the compilation, whether due to copyright restrictions or editor's choice, I do not know.
5. Having determined the source of the compilation's title, let us consider its inspiration. What does the phrase, "Left of the Dial" allude to? Take a moment to tune in and turn on, but don't drop out on me now!

Answer: College radio station's frequencies

College radio has always been relegated to the lower (Left) end of the FM frequency spectrum and so its broadcast range was rather limited prior to live-streaming on the Web. My hometown of Lancaster, PA has WFNM-FM at 89.1; I used to guest DJ at WCNI-FM 90.9 in New London, CT while stationed up there from 1984 to 1986 and 91X (91.1) is in San Diego, CA.

Answer: Holiday In Cambodia

Sung by Jello Biafra, fronting East Bay Ray (lead guitar), Klaus Fluoride (bass) and D.H. Peligro (drums), the DKs offered up a scathing commentary on Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge policies in Cambodia. These were shocking lyrics made even more powerful by the possibility of being subjected to such abuses.
7. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) made the cut with an homage (?) to a/an (in)famous airplane. Can you tell me the name of this song, which happens to be the name of the plane? You may ask COL Paul Tibbets, Jr. for help on this one.

Answer: Enola Gay

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber named "Enola Gay" made history by dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on 06 August 1945. The B-29 "Bockscar" dropped an atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan on 09 August 1945. Charles Lindbergh flew "The Spirit of St. Louis" across the Atlantic Ocean, becoming the first pilot to do so. "The Canary" was Emilia Earhart's first plane. Next question, flyboys and flygirls!
8. Philadelphia's The Dead Milkmen also made the cut, telling us of a chance encounter with the person of their dreams. No, it wasn't Minnie Pearl, if that is what you were thinking!

Answer: Punk Rock Girl

"Punk Rock Girl" is a hilarious take on meeting what was once a rarity - a punk rock girl. Now, they proliferate and there is even a meme about everyone wanting a "Goth Chick" girlfriend. Perhaps the band needs to revisit the idea! "Roxanne" was by The Police; "Madonna of the Wasps" is a Robyn Hitchcock and the Egyptians song and speaking of Goth chicks, Siouxsie (Sioux) and the Banshees sang about "Christine".
9. Some of the songs on the compilation are truly haunting. For instance, Bauhaus brought us the news of the demise of a famous horror movie actor and let us know that "the bats have all fled" as a result. Maybe they returned to Hungary.

Answer: Bela Lugosi's Dead

Bela Lugosi is, indeed, dead. 8=( The native Hungarian died on 16 August 1956 and his last film was Ed Wood's "Plan 9 from Outer Space". "Behind the Wall of Sleep" is by The Smithereens; "Ghosts" is by Japan and "I'm In Love with a German Film Star" is from The Passions.
10. This quiz has been a nightmare! Mob up and tell me who sang "Tell Me When It's Over".

Answer: The Dream Syndicate

All of the bands that were choices appear on this compilation, but only The Dream Syndicate could bring us closure.
