Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What year was 'Throwing Copper' released?

Answer: 1994

Most fans and critics still hail 'Throwing Copper' as Live's finest piece of work. It was a massive commercial success for the band with two singles hitting the Number One spot on the US Modern Rock charts.

The album eventually reaching Number One spot on the US Billboard 200 chart in 1995, a year after the album's initial release.
2. Which song made the US Mainstream Rock and US Modern Rock Number One spot in 1995?

Answer: Lightning Crashes

'Lightning Crashes' is a song dedicated by the band to a friend, Barbara Lewis, who was killed by a drunk driver. Barbara had many of her organs donated and the song reflects that her death enabled others to keep living.

As 'Lightning Crashes' was never released as a commercial single, it was ineligible for the Billboard Top 100, but received significant enough airplay to make the top spot in other lists.

It was also a Top 40 Hit in the UK. Generally, critics label 'Lightning Crashes' as the band's biggest hit.
3. Which other song from 'Throwing Copper' reached the Number One spot on the US Modern Rock chart?

Answer: Selling the Drama

'Selling the Drama' was the album's first released single and reached the US Modern Rock Number One spot in 1994.

It only peaked at Number 43 on the Billboard Hot 100 but earned the band rave reviews and helped the sales of 'Throwing Copper'.
4. 'Throwing Copper' was released through which music label?

Answer: Radioactive

'Throwing Copper' was the second album released by Live through Radioactive, the first being their 1991 album 'Mental Jewellery'.

The ablum was recorded at Pachyderm Studio, in Cannon Falls, Minnesota and was co-produced by Jerry Harrison, who was once the keyboarist and guitarist from Talking Heads.

All song lyrics were written by lead vocalist Ed Kowalczyk.
5. At 6 minutes 46 seconds, which song is the longest on the 'Throwing Copper' album?

Answer: Pillar of Davidson

'Pillar of Davidson' appears to split fans of the band down the middle, some pointing out that the slow beginning to the song prevented it from becoming a hit or at least preventing the song being released a single.

However, many fans point out that the slow beginning gave way to a powerful ending crescendo and that the melancholy, mournful lyrics, allied to a haunting ending with brilliant backing vocals, leaves this song as an unappreciated artwork.
6. 'T.B.D' are the initials for what?

Answer: Tibetan Book of Death

The 1991 release 'Mental Jewellery', Live's first studio release, was heavily influenced by Ed Kowalcyzk's interest in Eastern Philosophy, and the album was said to be inspired by Indian guru, Jiddu Krishnamurti.

'Throwing Copper' was a clear break from the ideologies of the first album and certainly helped its critical acclaim and mainstream success.

However, Kowalczyk made one or two small returns to the idea's of the first album, with 'T.B.D' standing for Tibetan Book of Death, based on Aldous Huxley's slow descent to death, aided by heroin.
7. What is the name of the so-called 'Hidden Track'?

Answer: Horse

Not located on the album discography (the album listing only show up to 'White, Discussion'), the hidden track 'Horse' is a completely different song from the rest of the album, a fairly laid-back offering from what was previously an angst-ridden album.

The final song on the album once again splits fans down the middle, some claiming the song is far too 'country' for their tastes, others of the opinion that it is the perfect laid-back ending to what was otherwise a powerful album.
8. In January 1995, Live appeared on which TV show to perform tracks from their album 'Throwing Copper'?

Answer: Saturday Night Live

Hosted by David Hyde Pierce, Live played two tracks from their smash hit album, performing 'I Alone' and 'Selling the Drama'.

The episode Live appeared on is notable as it was the last appearance by Mike Myers as a regular on Saturday Night Live.
9. Time for some lyrics. The following is the opening lines to which song? 'When all that's left to do is reflect on what's been done'

Answer: Dam at Otter Creek

'Dam at Otter Creek' is a dark, brooding song and leaves the listener in anticipation for what is to come later on the album.
10. Which song are these lyrics from? 'He was a "rock and roll messiah She was known for her child care'

Answer: Stage

This heavy rock anthem is one of the most unappreciated songs off the album. Full of energy with fast riffs and heavy drums, many critics claim this song was inspried by Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love.
