2. "Billie Jean" (Michael Jackson) was written by Michael Jackson. Jackson's performance of "Billie Jean" on a TV special won acclaim and was nominated for an Emmy Award. It introduced several of Jackson's signatures, including the moonwalk and white sequined glove.

3. "Flashdance... What a Feeling" (Irene Cara) is a song from the 1983 film "Flashdance" with music by Giorgio Moroder and lyrics by Keith Forsey and the song's performer, Irene Cara. It won the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song and earned Cara the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

4. "Down Under" (Men at Work) was written by Colin Hay and Ron Strykert. It was used as a theme song by the crew of Australia II in their successful bid to win the America's Cup. Men at Work played this song at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, alongside other Australian artists.

5. "Beat It" (Michael Jackson) was written by Michael Jackson. The single, along with the music video, helped make "Thriller" the best-selling album of all time. It also received Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

6. "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (Bonnie Tyler) was written by Jim Steinman. The song became Bonnie Tyler's biggest career hit, topping the US and UK Singles Charts. The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

7. "Maneater" (Hall & Oates) was written by Sara Allen, Daryl Hall and John Oates. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and remained in the top spot for four weeks, more than any of the duo's five other number-one hits.

8. "Baby, Come to Me" (Patti Austin and James Ingram) was written by Rod Temperton. It gained exposure as the romantic theme song for Luke Spencer, a leading character on the ABC soap opera "General Hospital". ABC received so many inquiries about the song that Warner Bros. decided to re-release it whereupon it went to number one.

9. "Maniac" (Michael Sembello) is a song from the film "Flashdance" that was written by Dennis Matkosky and its performer, Michael Sembello. After the film became a surprise success, a music video was made using scenes from the film, coinciding with the release of the single. "Maniac" was nominated for the Academy Award and Golden Globe for Best Original Song.

10. "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" (Eurythmics) was written by the British new wave music duo the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and David A. Stewart). 13. "Come On Eileen" (Dexys Midnight Runners) was written by Kevin Rowland, Jim Paterson and Billy Adams. The song reached number one in the US and prevented Michael Jackson from having back-to-back number one hits ("Billie Jean" was the number one single the previous seven weeks, while "Beat It" was the number one song the following three).

14. "Shame on the Moon" (Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band) was written by Rodney Crowell. Glenn Frey joined Seger on background harmony vocals on the song. It spent four weeks at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart and topped the Adult Contemporary chart.

15. "She Works Hard for the Money" (Donna Summer) was written by Donna Summer and Michael Omartian.
