Even though it's often referred to as the 'Berlin' trilogy - "Low" (1977), "'Heroes'" (1977) and "Lodger" (1979) - only "'Heroes'" was completely recorded in the German capital. The three albums were recorded with Brian Eno and possess a cold, almost post-punk sound.

They were influenced by the Krautrock scene of the seventies (Kraftwerk, Neu and Cluster), so that's partly where the 'Berlin' tag comes from.

The creation of "A Saucerful of Secrets" (1968) was a difficult one. Founder member Syd Barrett became very difficult to work with, due to his mental instability. In the end he only appeared on three songs: "Remember a Day", "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun" and his only composition on the album "Jugband Blues", for which he brought in a Salvation Army band that he spotted out on the streets.

Another song of his that was recorded was "Vegetable Man", but when he was ousted from the band in March '68, the other members thought the lyrical content was too close for comfort to Barrett's state of mind, and decided not to include it on the album. Barrett's old friend David Gilmour was brought in as replacement guitar player and played on the rest of the tracks.

Even though Cope used the phrase for his solo debut album, "World Shut Your Mouth" (1984), it was only for his third album that he actually came up with a song to go with the title. "World Shut Your Mouth" (1987) is probably his best known single and greatest solo hit. With his earlier band The Teardrop Explodes he scored a couple of hits as well - "Reward" and "Treason", both in 1981 - catapulting the young Cope and his merry band of LSD freaks into magazines like "Smash Hits" and young girls' hearts.

Echo was the name of the drum machine the band used in their early days. When they took a real drummer on board - Pete de Freitas joined them in late 1979 - the name stuck. De Freitas was killed in a car accident in 1989.
