Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The show's theme was Halloween and Mary Byrne kicked off with her rendition of "Could It Be Magic". This was a 1975 hit for Barry Manilow and a 1992 hit for Take That, but which disco diva took the song into the charts in 1976?

Answer: Donna Summer

Manilow co-wrote the song with Adrienne Anderson and his version reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 25 in the UK (in 1978). Donna Summer's recording was the follow-up to "Love To Love You Baby", her controversial debut hit in the US and UK. It peaked at numbers 52 and 40 respectively. Boyband Take That took the song to number three in the UK.
2. Aiden Grimshaw sung a much slowed down version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller". The song was one of many written by Englishman Rod Temperton. Which of these hits did Temperton NOT write?

Answer: The Bee Gees' "Night Fever"

Temperton contributed three songs to the phenomenally successful "Thriller" album. The other two, "Baby Be Mine" and "The Lady in My Life" were the only tracks not to be released as singles.
3. Time to go double Dutch. The song "Venus" must be unique in having been taken to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by two different Dutch groups. On "X-Factor" the song was performed by girl group Belle Amie. Please complete the opening lyric: "A goddess on a mountain top Was burning like _____________ "

Answer: A silver flame

"Venus" first reached number one, in 1970, for Shocking Blue. It also featured as part of a medley of songs by fellow Dutch musicians Stars on 45, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1981. A third appearance at number one came in 1986 through British girl group Bananarama.
4. Rebecca Ferguson sung "Wicked Game". The original was the only US hit of any significance for which of these artists?

Answer: Chris Isaak

"Wicked Game" reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number ten in the UK but only after being featured in the David Lynch movie, "Wild at Heart".

A quote from hit TV comedy "Flight of the Conchords" claims that "Women like three things: Men in kilts, Southern Comfort, and Chris Isaak's 'Wicked Game'." (Source : Wikipedia)
5. "I Can Dream About You" and "Instant Replay" were hits for Dan Hartman, as was "Relight my Fire", performed on the show by Treyc Cohen. In which year was the song originally released?

Answer: 1980

"Relight My Fire" topped the US Dance chart but failed to reach the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, Hartman died of a brain tumour in 1994 at the age of 43, a year after seeing his song reach number one in the UK courtesy of a collaboration between Take That and Lulu.
6. Matt Cardle took on "Bleeding Love", a week after singing "...Baby One More Time". What connects these two songs in their original versions?

Answer: They were both huge hits for female singers

Both songs were breakthrough singles for their respective artistes in the US and both were chart toppers there and in the UK. "...Baby One More Time" was Britney Spears' debut single whilst "Bleeding Love" propelled Leona Lewis, winner of the third "X Factor" season, to international stardom.
7. Wagner's "rendition" of "Bat out of Hell" was one of two Jim Steinman songs used on the show. Steinman's 1981 solo album, "Bad for Good", was originally intended to be recorded by Meat Loaf as a follow-up to the "Bat out of Hell" album. Why did this not happen?

Answer: Meat Loaf lost his voice

Steinman had written all of the songs for "Bat out of Hell" and "Bad for Good" was intended to be its successor. Meat Loaf was midway through recording the album in 1979, when he lost his voice and it was decided that Steinman would rerecord the material as a solo project. Steinman also wrote all of the songs for Meat Loaf's "Dead Ringer" (1981) and "Bat out of Hell II: Back into Hell" (1993) as well as contributing songs to many of his other albums.
8. The other Jim Steinman song on the show was "Total Eclipse of the Heart" brought to us by boyband One Direction. The original was a hit for Bonnie Tyler in 1983 and had a video that matched the extravagance of the song. Which of these did NOT feature in the video?

Answer: Stampeding elephants

The video was filmed at Holloway Sanatorium, an English asylum and masterpiece of gothic architecture. Tyler's version topped the charts in both the US and UK. The song has also charted for Nicki French (1995) and the cast of "Glee" (2010).
9. Final song of the Saturday night came from Cher Lloyd with the 1992 classic "Stay". Who originally recorded this song?

Answer: Shakespears Sister

At the time of "Stay", Shakespears Sister consisted of ex-Bananarama member Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit. The name was taken from the title of a single by the Smiths and lost its e and apostrophe due to the inability of a friend to spell! "Stay" topped the UK charts for eight weeks and reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100.
10. The Sunday sing-off pitted Belle Amie against eventual survivor Katie Waissel. Belle Amie chose to perform "Breakaway", made famous by ex-"American Idol" winner, Kelly Clarkson. Which 'complicated' Canadian star co-wrote the song?

Answer: Avril Lavigne

"Breakaway" became a hit in 2004 after featuring on the soundtrack of "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 22 in the UK. Lavigne rejected the song for herself as she felt it didn't quite match the songs she was recording at that time.
