Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both the film and its soundtrack album were released by "Virgin". Who was the founder of that company?

Answer: Richard Branson

Richard Branson started "Virgin Records" as a mail order company, before branching out into record stores, mobile phones, trains and aeroplanes. (No boats as yet, though!) Richard takes an executive producer credit on the film, and most of the artists featured on the soundtrack are "Virgin Records" artists. "Electric Dreams" the movie was not a big box office success, but the soundtrack proved popular with 1980s music fans.
2. The soundtrack features PP Arnold singing the song "Electric Dreams". With which Cat Stevens song did she have a hit with in 1967?

Answer: "The First Cut Is The Deepest"

It reached number 18 in the UK charts. PP Arnold returned back to the top 30 in 1988 with The Beatmasters, on a song called "Burn It Up".
3. In the film, the slightly nerd-ish Miles has connected his computer up to all his household gadgets. He goes out one night, leaving Edgar happily blaring out music amid flashing lights. The song being played at neighbour disturbing volume was written by which former Traveling Wilbury?

Answer: Jeff Lynne

Edgar basically came "to life" after Miles (played by Lenny Von Dohlen) clumsily spills champagne on the computer's keyboard. The strangest love triangle in movie history then follows, after a pretty girl called Madeline becomes Miles' new neighbour. Jeff Lynne was, of course, a member of The Move and The Electric Light Orchestra.

He has also written and produced songs for many artists, including solo albums by Tom Petty and Roy Orbison. Jeff contributed the songs "Video" and "Let It Run" to the soundtrack.
4. Which Culture Club backing singer sings the track "Now You're Mine"?

Answer: Helen Terry

It is Helen's distinctive vocals that can be heard on Culture Club's "Church Of The Poison Mind" hit.
5. Another group appearing on the soundtrack are Heaven 17. From which UK band did the band evolve from?

Answer: Human League

Members Martyn Ware and Ian Marsh appeared on early Human League records, before forming Heaven 17 with Glenn Gregory. Heaven 17 scored their biggest hit with "Temptation" in 1983.
6. The song "The Duel" was composed and played by Giorgio Moroder. Which artist did Giorgio achieve success with on the 1977 hit "I Feel Love"?

Answer: Donna Summer

Edgar hears Madeline playing her cello in her flat one day, and joins in the tune. "The Duel" is the result of their collaboration, although Madeline believes it is Miles that is actually playing the song with her. Donna Summer, often known as the "Queen of Disco music", has had numerous hits from the 70s to the 90s.
7. In the movie, Edgar the computer composes a love song for Madeline called "Love Is Love". Which flamboyant UK hitmakers really composed the song?

Answer: Culture Club

Culture Club also have the song "The Dream" on the soundtrack. The band had several hits in the UK, including the 1983 number one "Karma Chameleon".
8. In the film, what instrument does Madeleine play?

Answer: Cello

Madeline is played in the movie by Virginia Madsen, and the beautiful old cello is her pride and joy.
9. Which well-known guitarist guested on the song "Electric Dreams"?

Answer: Peter Frampton

Best known for his huge selling "Frampton Comes Alive" album, Peter was also a member of 60s outfit The Herd.
10. Realising that love between a girl and a computer is somewhat impossible, the final scenes of the film show Edgar self destructing, while "Together In Electric Dreams" is played all over San Francisco. Who is the vocalist featured with Giorgio Moroder on this hit song?

Answer: Philip Oakey

The song went on to reach number 3 in the UK singles charts, and Giorgio and Philip also recorded a successful album together. Philip Oakey was also the lead singer for the best selling Human League, who achieved much success with their "Dare" album and "Don't You Want Me" single.

Although the computer technology in "Electric Dreams" looks a little dated nowadays, the musical soundtrack from the 80s still stands up well. As at 2003, the movie is quite hard to get hold of, although it does sometimes appear on film TV channels.

The soundtrack itself is easily available, and has just been re-issued on CD in the UK.
