Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who or what was known as the "sixth quintuplet"?

Answer: their sister, Pauline

Pauline, who looked quite a bit like the quintuplets, was only 11 months older than them, and was photographed with the quints. There was an attempt to capitalise on the concept but it didn't go anywhere.
2. What terrible mistake did Oliva Dionne, the girls' father, make when they were just a few days old?

Answer: he signed a contract to display them at the Chicago World's Fair

Oliva Dionne was already the father of five and overnight became the father of ten. He was approached by World's Fair exhibitors and, worrying about being able to feed all of his children, reluctantly signed a contract to display the girls. The next day he tore up the contract, but public outcry caused a chain reaction of events that lead to the removal of the girls from their parents' custody.

The Ontario government ostensibly wanted to prevent the girls from being exploited, but that is exactly what they ended up doing.
3. Anyone could take pictures of the quintuplets as long as it was done on the Dafoe Hospital and Nursery premises.

Answer: False

Only Fred Davis, from the Toronto Star could take pictures of the quintuplets. Not even their own family could photograph the girls.
4. Which girl was the first-born quintuplet?

Answer: Yvonne

Yvonne was the the first born and is reputed to have been the biggest. Their birth order was: Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emilie, and Marie.
5. How many of the quintuplets eventually got married?

Answer: three

The three to get married were Cecile, Annette, and Marie. Unfortunately, none of the marriages lasted. After the death of Marie, the three remaining sisters, Yvonne, Cecile, and Annette moved in together.
6. How many (combined) children did the Dionne quintuplets have?

Answer: 10

Annette had three children, Marie two children, and Cecile had five. Cecile had a set of twin boys, one of whom died in infancy from kidney cancer.

Answer: three nurses and three policemen

The nurses rotated who would take care of the girls at any one time. In the main building a housekeeper and two maids lived with the girls.
8. What given name did all of the Dionne quintuplets have? (Hint - they were Roman Catholic.)

Answer: Marie

All of the quintuplets were given a first name as well as two middle names. Each girl had Marie somewhere in her name. Their names are as follows:

Yvonne Edouilda Marie Dionne,
Annette Lillianne Marie Dionne,
Cécile Marie Emilda Dionne,
Émilie Marie Jeanne Dionne,
Marie Reine Alma Dionne.
9. Who paid for the expenses associated with the Dafoe Hospital and Nursery?

Answer: the quintuplets' trust fund

The Dafoe Hospital and Nursery was built with money gained from a Red Cross fundraiser, however the quintuplets paid for all of the expenses related to the Dafoe Hospital themselves. This included staff salaries, food, heating, and even toilet paper for Quintland!
10. The Dionne quintuplets sang many songs for the public. What song in particular bothered many French-Canadians?

Answer: There Will Always Be an England

The girls sang "There Will Always Be an England" in order to help with the war effort. It was a sore point for many francophones as the Dionne sisters were French-Canadian.
