Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1870 - This structural engineer worked mainly on bridges, where he modified and improved the bascule bridge design. His most famous work was the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California. Who is this man, who, as a tribute to his alma mater the University of Cincinnati, placed a brick from a demolished building on the campus in the south anchorage of the bridge?

Answer: Joseph B. Strauss

Joseph B. Strauss, a native Ohioan, graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1892 with degrees in economics and business, and was named his class president. After designing the Burnside Bridge in Portland, Oregon and the Lewis and Clark Bridge between Longview, Washington and Rainier, Oregon, he was named the Chief Engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge. Strauss was very aware of the dangers inherent in building such a large bridge and a safety net he installed reportedly saved the lives of 19 workers. Strauss died in 1938, almost exactly one year after the Golden Gate Bridge opened.
2. 1913 - This American politician was elected to the presidency twice, but only served five and a half years in office. Though he successfully pulled the US out of Vietnam (after secretly bombing Cambodia), was the first President to talk to astronauts on the moon and opened relations with China, none of those are what he is remembered for most. Who was the first President to resign from office?

Answer: Richard Nixon

Richard Nixon did not take losing or resigning easily, as first seen in 1960. After he lost the 1960 presidential election to John F. Kennedy, Nixon was out of politics for two years, and spent the time writing his book "Six Crises". He did not originally plan on running for Governor of California in 1962, but Republican leaders urged him to do so.

After his defeat to Pat Brown, Nixon announced he was retiring from politics by saying, "You won't have Nixon to kick around anymore because, gentlemen, this is my last press conference." Finally, after he resigned from the presidency he had a number of health problems - within a month one of his legs had swelled to three times its normal size and he was hospitalized. Within a month of being released, the swelling came back and he was under grave danger of a blood clot going to his brain. Following surgery, he fell into a coma after falling out of bed, but returned home within three weeks.
3. 1934 - This American football player was picked at #200 overall (in the 17th round) in the 1956 NFL Draft. He ended up playing 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers, and was named to four Pro Bowls as well as winning the MVP Awards for both of the first two Super Bowls (which the Packers won). Who is this athlete, elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977?

Answer: Bart Starr

Bart Starr led the Packers to five NFL Championships, including Super Bowls I and II. His best year statistically was 1966 - the Packers went 12-2 during the season (11-2 in Starr's starts), and promptly trounced the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl I.

He threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns during the game on his way to the Super Bowl MVP Award. During the season, he threw 14 touchdowns to only three interceptions, and won virtually every major award possible except for the Burt Bell Award, which went to Don Meredith. Following his playing career, Starr coached the Packers for nine years but only made the playoffs once.
4. 1935 - This American actor began his career as Maynard G. Krebs on "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis," which lasted for four seasons on CBS. The network took advantage of his comedic skill, casting him in the lead role of "Gilligan's Island" that began officially in 1964. Who is this man, whose only award came in 2004 at the TV Land Awards, when the surviving members of the cast of "Gilligan's Island" all received the Pop Culture Award?

Answer: Bob Denver

Bob Denver capitalized on his success as Gilligan as much as he possibly could. He played the character in the TV movies related to the series: "Gilligan's Island: Marooned", "Rescue from Gilligan's Island", "The Castaways on Gilligan's Island", and "The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island".

He also provided the voice for Gilligan on "The New Adventures of Gilligan" and "Gilligan's Planet". After all those were finished, he decided to act as Gilligan again on four TV shows: "The New Gidget", "ALF", "Baywatch", and "Meego".
5. 1935 - This American television figure is a mainstay in the sports world, mostly known for his work on NCAA basketball, the NFL, golf and tennis. He began his work on NBC, calling eight Super Bowls and four Summer Olympics on TV and a plethora of sports on radio. Who is this man, later hired by CBS and ESPN to call almost all of the Grand Slam tournaments for the PGA and ATP?

Answer: Dick Enberg

Dick Enberg began calling sporting events in 1966 when he started calling play-by-play for both the UCLA men's basketball team and the Los Angeles Rams. He soon began working games for the California Angels when NBC noticed him. During the 1970s, he started calling national NCAA basketball, NFL, MLB and Wimbledon.

In 1980, he did the Olympics and began calling the Rose Bowl. In 1988, 1992 and 1996 he also called the Olympics but was hired by CBS in 2000 before he could do those games. For his career work, Enberg won double-digit Emmys, including a Lifetime Achievement Award and also won a star on the Walk of Fame.
6. 1944 - This English rock star has been a member of several bands but most notably he was the lead guitarist for The Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for both bands - with The Yardbirds in 1992 and with Led Zeppelin in 1995. Who is this man, awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2005 for his charity work in Brazil?

Answer: Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page was first offered a spot in The Yardbirds in 1964 to replace his friend Eric Clapton but he declined. The next year Clapton quit the band but still Page was reluctant to join due to his success in session music, where he played with multiple artists such as The Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, The Kinks and The Who.

He finally joined in 1966 when Paul Samwell-Smith left the group and Page immediately volunteered his services. In 1968, after several personnel changes had mixed up the group, Page, Robert Plant, John Bonham and John Paul Jones appeared as The New Yardbirds in concert, but quickly changed their name to Led Zeppelin, and the rest is history.
7. 1959 - This NASCAR driver has raced in the Winston/Sprint Cup Series, Busch/Nationwide Series and the Craftsman/Camping World Truck Series. With Roush Racing, he finished 2nd in the Winston Cup four times - 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002. Later on, he also raced for Ginn Racing, DEI and Hendrick Motorsports. Who is this driver, who drove the #6 car for the majority of his career?

Answer: Mark Martin

Statistically, Mark Martin's best season was the 1998 Winston Cup, when he won seven races; Las Vegas, Ft. Worth, Fontana, Michigan, Bristol, Dover and Charlotte. Additionally, he had 26 top tens including 22 top five finishes. He also led the most laps of anybody on the series that year.

Unfortunately, Jeff Gordon won 13 races (including seven of nine at one point) and won by nearly 400 points in the overall standings. However, it was not the closest he came to a championship with Roush Racing because in 2002 he lost to Tony Stewart by 28 points (after only winning one race that year) and in 1990 he lost to Dale Earnhardt by only 26 points, when Earnhardt won 6 more races than Martin.
8. 1965 - This American basketball player was drafted at #12 overall in the 1987 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets, but played most of his 14-year career for the Charlotte Hornets. He never made an All-Star game, only got to the 2nd round of the playoffs once, and set no statistical records, but is still well-remembered. Who is this man, who at 5'3" was the shortest player ever to play in the NBA?

Answer: Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues

While at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland, Muggsy Bogues played with future-NBA players David Wingate, Reggie Williams and Reggie Lewis. With that kind of talent, Dunbar never lost a game during his junior and senior years and was ranked the #1 high school team in the country by "USA Today." At Wake Forest, he only played in the NCAA Tournament once - his freshman year, when the Deacons lost to Houston in the Elite Eight.

In 1986 he won the gold medal at the FIBA World Championship while he was still at Wake Forest. Bogues also had a role in "Space Jam", where he played one of the basketball players whose skills were taken away by the evil cartoon characters.
9. 1978 - This American football player was born with the last name Johnson. He made five consecutive Pro Bowls from 2003-2007, and led the NFL in receiving yards in 2006 with 1369 yards for the Cincinnati Bengals. Who is this wide receiver, whose new last name (changed legally in 2008) is condensed into one word from two Spanish numbers?

Answer: Chad Ochocinco

Chad Ochocinco (born Chad Johnson) did not play football at his first college, Langston University. After a year there, he transferred to Santa Monica College, where he played alongside future Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith. Oregon State coach Dennis Erickson recruited Johnson from there, and alongside future Bengals teammate T.J. Houshmandzadeh, helped the Beavers to a Fiesta Bowl victory over Notre Dame.

He was taken at #36 overall in the 2001 NFL Draft, and from 2002-2007 caught 1000+ yards. Johnson wore #85 on the Bengals, and supposedly in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month in October 2006, he announced he wanted to be called "Ocho Cinco," since "ocho" is Spanish for eight and "cinco" is Spanish for five (despite the fact that "ochenta y cinco" is eighty-five in Spanish).

In August 2008, Johnson legally changed his last name to Ochocinco, and the Bengals allowed him to have the name on the back of his jersey in 2009.
10. 1980 - This Spanish golfer turned professional in 1999, the same year that he shot the lowest amateur score at the Masters Tournament. Early in his career he was mostly known for his incredibly long address to the ball, where he normally re-gripped his club over 20 times per swing. Who is this athlete, who seemingly choked away the 2007 Open Championship and the 2008 PGA Championship to Padraig Harrington?

Answer: Sergio Garcia

Sergio Garcia came under fire in the 2002 US Open at Bethpage Black for his routine when addressing the ball before he hit. Garcia would grip the club, set it down, pull it back up, and re-grip over and over so many times that the New York fans eventually got tired of it. Fans famously shouted "Just hit the ball, Sergio!" which Garcia did not take kindly. Since then, Sergio has been notable in the golf world for both his antics and failures to win a major championship, which he had not done in his first nine and a half years as a professional.

In 2007, he spat in a cup at the WGC-CA Championship following a three-putt, and later that year blamed his loss at the Open Championship on "bad breaks". In late 2008, he climbed to #2 on the Official World Golf Rankings despite having never won a major on the PGA Tour.
