Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where in the Caribbean did the religion of Vodou originate?

Answer: Haiti

Vodou first developed in Haiti among West African slaves imported by European settlers as a source of labour. It is a synthesis of various traditional West African religions and evolved over the 16th to 19th centuries. It teaches belief in a supreme being called Bondye who is served by a number of spirits called 'Iwa'. Followers use rituals including drumming, singing and dancing to allow the Iwas to possess them, this being considered a valuable and positive spiritual experience. Louisiana Voodoo also derives from the same West African roots but combines elements of the folk Catholicism practised by the dominant French and Spanish colonists of the region.

6. In most understandings of animism, which of the following do NOT possess a distinct spirit or essence?

Answer: a laptop computer

The term animism stems from the Latin "anima" which can mean life, or spirit, or breath. It is a religious, or spiritual, or anthropological, belief system in which objects, places and creatures each have their own distinct spirit within them. Varieties of this belief are remarkably widespread and connect many distinct indigenous peoples.

The study of animism has been compromised by the ethnocentricity of 19th century European proto-anthropologists who tended to look down on this "primitive" form of religion. Animism is sometimes confused with pantheism; they are not the same thing.

A religion can be both animistic and pantheistic. Animists believe that all things, animate and inanimate, have a spirit and these spirits are unique to each thing. Pantheism believes that the universe is essentially spiritual and that all things are connected by that one essence.

7. In the New Testament Book of Revelation, a number of horses and riders are described. How many are there in this group?

Answer: four

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are described in Revelation 6:1-8. The white horse (6:1-2) represents Pestilence. The red horse (6:3-4) represents War. The black horse (6:5-6) represents Famine. The pale horse (6:7-8) represents Death. The meaning of these horses and their riders has been a fruitful field for speculation and debate throughout Christian history.

They lend themselves well to artistic interpretation. Albrecht Dürer's famous woodcut of them is an outstanding example. Gustave Doré also did a series of illustrations of the horsemen for a Bible in 1865.

The biblical notion is that the horsemen are sort of harbingers of the Last Judgment.
