Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. My mother is your mother too. In fact she's all of our mothers, the mother of all. My name's Abel by the way. Who's my mom?

Answer: Eve

Well my father (Adam) certainly isn't my mother! Right, Eve, my mom, was the first woman, the wife of Adam. She was tempted by Satan to eat the forbidden fruit, and therefore banished from the garden of Eden. She had three sons: Cain, Seth and I. Of course Seth was born much later, and Cain killed me but that's another story. Eve means life bearer.
2. Hello, I'm Ishmael. I sort of have two mothers, my birth one and my adopted mother. My adopted mother was Sarah, wife of Abraham. She was worried that she wouldn't have any kids so after some negotiations, she became my adopted mother. Luckily I still get to see my real mother. Who was she, and where was she from?

Answer: Hagar, from Egypt

My mother was Hagar, a slave in Sarah's household. When Sarah realized that she couldn't have any kids, she offered Abraham (that's my father) Hagar in her place. After I was born, by a miracle Sarah also had a child named Isaac. I'm sad to say that the tension between my mother and Sarah grew so great that Hagar and I were eventually sent away. Hagar means stranger.
3. Hi, I'm Jacob. I have a twin named Esau. I'm going to tell you a little bit about my mom, in particular how she came to be married to my father, Isaac. My grandfather, Abraham, wanted a good wife for Isaac so he sent someone to Haran. The messenger asked God that the woman who watered all his camels would be Isaac's wife. My mom watered all those camels, married my father, and eventually had twins! Who was she?

Answer: Rebekah

Did you guess that the twins were me and my brother? I can't say that we ever got along too well. Anyway, Abraham sent a servant all the way to his homeland to find a bride for father. When the servant saw a lady (Rebekah) who was willing to give him and his camels a drink, he brought her back as Issac's bride. She married him and soon enough we were born.
And the rest is history.

P.S Rebekah means heifer or young cow.
4. I never got to know my mother well as she died when I was very young. I have many brothers, but only one, Benjamin, is my mother's son. Her name is Rachel. My father is Jacob. When my father first came to marry my mom, my grandfather, Laban, played a mean trick on him. Instead of giving him Rachel to marry, my father was given someone else. Who was it?

Answer: my mother's sister

Tradition among Laban's people was that Rachel (my mom) couldn't marry before her older sister Leah did. My dad wanted to marry my mom so much that he promised Laban that he'd work for seven years if he could marry Rachel. After that time, he was tricked into marrying Leah. He then agreed to working seven more years for Rachel. I wish I could say that it all ended happily ever after but I don't want to lie.
Leah had many children, but my mother only had two- me and Benjamin. Unfortunately, she died in childbirth.
Rachel means ewe (female sheep).
5. My mom is one of the lesser known biblical moms, but she probably saved my life from those Egyptians. My name is Moses. You probably know me from the Exodus story of the Bible. When I was born, the Egyptians were killing all Israelite baby boys but my mother, Jochebed, saved me. What ingenious method did she use?

Answer: floating me down the river in a basket

Wasn't that a wonderful idea? She saved me. Not much is known about my mother's life, but we do know that her father was Levi, she was married to Amram, and that she was the mother of me and my siblings, Aaron and Miriam. Despite our lack of knowledge of Jochebed's life, we can all agree that her brilliant idea saved my life, and I was able to grow up to free the Israelites.
Jochebed means glory of Jehovah.
6. Hi, I'm Samuel. I'm being raised in the temple by the high priest Eli. My mother was Hannah and for a very long time she couldn't have any kids. She'd come to the temple everyday to weep and pray for child, but Eli thought something else. What state did Eli think my mother was in?

Answer: drunk

He thought she was drunk! Eli asked my mother, and when she explained her dilemma, he told her that her prayers would be answered. And they were! She got me, Samuel, and promised to devote my life to the lord. I would later grow up to anoint King Saul. But it all started with Mommy's prayer in the temple.
Hannah means "God favours me".
7. My mom was a rather ambitious women who became a wife of King David, my father. My father wanted to marry her, but problem was, she already had a husband. So King David did a not-so-kind thing. He had my mother's husband killed so he could marry her instead. Later I was born, and I grew up to become one of the great biblical kings. Who was my mother?

Answer: Bathsheba

Bathsheba was one of my father's many wives. Her husband, Uriah, was killed by the enemy during a battle, which my father King David, had cleverly set up. Although, I wasn't my father's oldest son, I was the one he chose to be king after him and I turned out to be a very wise biblical king. My name is Solomon.
Bathsheba means "daughter of abundance".
8. My mother was Elizabeth, cousin of Mary. Although she thought that she was too old, she found out that she was going to have me. I became quite a famous preacher just like my cousin Jesus. What was my name?

Answer: John

Right - though I'm better known as John the Baptist. I baptized people, preparing them for the coming of Jesus. My mother was Elizabeth and my father was Zacharias. When Mary came to visit my mother, my mother said, 'Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb". You may recognize this from the "Hail Mary" prayer.
Elizabeth means "God's promise".
9. My mother Mary is perhaps one of the most well known women in the Bible. I, Jesus, am also quite well known. When her husband Joseph had to go to Bethlehem for a census, she went with him and I was born there. But what was my mother's hometown called?

Answer: Nazareth

My mother Mary traveled all the way from Nazareth to Bethlehem with my father while she was pregnant with me. Mary was indeed a very important Biblical mother. She was chosen to be the mother of God, and was very brave to accept it. She was also the one who encouraged me to perform my first miracle at Cana and she was also there when I died on the cross.
10. My mother Herodias can be taken as a cunning woman. She was married to my uncle, Herod Antipas and greatly disliked the preacher John the Baptist. I'm Salome by the way. One evening, my dancing pleased him so much that he told me he'd grant anything I asked for. What did my mother tell me to ask for?

Answer: John the Baptists' head on a platter

You can imagine what a horrid thing that was! John the Baptist was already my fathers prisoner at the time. Herodias had been married to Herod II, my father, before she got a divorce to marry my uncle. My uncle was also divorced and John didn't approve of these divorces. My mother was also the daughter-in-law of Herod the Great, the king who ordered all the baby boys killed.
Herodias is the feminine form of Herod which means "heroic".
