Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cape Doctor

Answer: Africa

The Cape Doctor is a wind that blows across the South African capital of Cape Town. Locals believed that the strong breeze cleared the area of pollution and therefore colloquially called it 'the Doctor'. It is sometimes also called the "South-Easter" after the direction in which it blows.
2. Harmattan

Answer: Africa

The Harmattan is a dry and dusty wind blowing across western Africa. Occurring from the end of November to March, it originates in the Sahara desert and blows towards the Gulf of Guinea. The name is taken from the Twi language spoken by the Akan people of Ghana.
3. Loo

Answer: Asia

The Loo is a hot and dry summer wind. It blows across northern India and Pakistan and is mainly experienced during the peak summer months of May and June. It retreats with the onset of the monsoons which bring rain to the Indian subcontinent.
4. Karakkaze

Answer: Asia

The Karakkaze is a dry wind occurring in Japan. These winds are formed when they cross the mountains in the Joetsu region. The lower temperature causes the water vapour to precipitate over the mountains in the form of rain or snow. Thus, when the winds cross the mountains, they are dry.
5. Chinook

Answer: North America

The Chinook is a westerly wind blowing across the western part of North America. It was named after the Chinook people living along the Columbia River, where these winds occur. These winds were also called "snow eaters" by the Blackfoot people.
6. Nor'easter

Answer: North America

These winds form in the western Atlantic Ocean. They then blow across the north eastern part of the North American continent leading to the name Nor'easter (or Northeaster). The winds are strong and typically bring along storms, especially during the winter months.
7. Bohm

Answer: Europe

Bohm is also called the Bohemian wind as it arises in the Bohemian basin. It is a dry wind that is often dusty due to the particles carried from the basin. In German it is also known as the Bohmischer wind.
8. Mistral

Answer: Europe

The Mistral is a cold wind blowing from the southern part of France into the Mediterranean. The name comes from the Occitan language spoken in parts of southern France and means "masterly". Other names for this wind are Mestral in Catalan and Majjistral in Maltese.
9. Fremantle Doctor

Answer: Oceania

The Fremantle Doctor is a sea breeze occurring in the state of Western Australia. Its name is sometimes shortened to the Freo Doctor or the Doctor. This cool sea breeze blows across the coast of western Australia in the afternoons during the summer months.
10. Nor'wester

Answer: Oceania

The Nor'wester blows across New Zealand's South Island. This unique weather pattern brings rain to the west coast of the island. At the same time, it is warm and dry on the eastern coast.
