Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Poison Ivy is an antagonist in the DC Comics world. In which comic, as an adversary for a caped hero, did she first appear?

Answer: Batman

The character of Poison Ivy was created by Robert Kanigher and Sheldon Moldoff in 1966. She first appeared in "Batman" #181 in the story "Beware of -- Poison Ivy!". She appears at the Gotham Art Museum when she seeks to challenge for the title of the top female criminal.

The original contenders were Dragon Fly, Silken Spider, and Tiger Moth, and Poison Ivy puts herself to overtake these three.
2. Though Poison Ivy's real name is originally said to be Lillian Rose, after the DC Comics 'Crisis', her identity was changed (or retconned). What was her name then said to be?

Answer: Pamela

Although first appearing as Dr. Lillian Rose, after the 'Crisis' Poison Ivy was given a new name and became Dr. Pamela Lillian Isley. She was a shy botanist who falls for her supervisor, Dr. Woodrue. Using his influence, Woodrue is able to convince Isley to be experimented on and she is injected with natural poisons and toxins. Though she almost dies, her body is able to undergo a transformation and she becomes Poison Ivy.
3. While her appearance gets some alterations, one thing is consistent, the colour of Poison Ivy's hair. What colour is it?

Answer: red

Poison Ivy is a female villain, about 5'6" (168 cm) in height, with long red hair. On occasion she has green skin (due to her transformation) or sometimes she has White features. What is also consistent is that she is very attractive and often portrayed as a seductress. In fact, she is very drawn to Batman because he is the only one that seems to be able to resist her charms.
4. Poison Ivy is a villain who specializes in one particular kind of crime. What would best describe Poison Ivy's crimes from these choices?

Answer: Eco-terrorism

After Dr. Isley undergoes her transformation, she discovers that she has natural powers, power over nature, and that nature has no power over her. Since she was already passionate about ecological issues, as Poison Ivy she becomes nature's champion, willing to fight for causes that are important for the natural world.

She is described as a "psychotic eco-terrorist", but, though there is a very passionate side to her that wants to protect the environment, she is also very kind underneath and can be very humane.
5. Poison Ivy finds a wounded villain and nurses her back to life. Which almost-victim of The Joker's does Poison Ivy become a lifelong friend to?

Answer: Harley Quinn

Harley Quinn was in an abusive and destructive relationship with The Joker. When she tried to break free of him, The Joker set off an earthquake and left Harley to die in the rubble. Poison Ivy found her and nursed her back to health, sparking a lifelong friendship.

The two teamed up regularly and are usually allied. There is also a love interest between them that is mutual but not monogamous.
6. At one point, Poison Ivy leaves Gotham City to start afresh. She terraforms an island into a natural paradise for her but it gets bombed by the Americans. Where is this island?

Answer: Caribbean Sea

Poison Ivy feels that Gotham City is to urban for her and that she loses herself in it. She came from Seattle, Washington, and there are far greater expanses of nature out there. A few years after arriving at Gotham, she makes her way south to the Caribbean Sea and finds an island that is a desert and is deserted. Using her powers, she terraforms the island into her own personal paradise.

However, believing the island was abandoned and uninhabited, the Americans firebomb it, destroying her idyllic retreat. Devastated and angry, Poison Ivy returns to Gotham to exact revenge.
7. While Poison Ivy has many powers, she also has some weaknesses. Apart from the fact that she suffers from mental illnesses, which of these things is dangerous for Poison Ivy?

Answer: Darkness

Like the plants that she has dominion over, Poison Ivy is susceptible to darkness. When she was captured by Clayface after Gotham City was destroyed in an earthquake, for six months he imprisoned her underground in order to keep her weak and powerless, just like plants and their need for photosynthesis.

While she is able to communicate with plants and to control them, she requires sunlight in order to use her powers.
8. While Poison Ivy has primarily been a villain, she has also been depicted as an antiheroine.

Answer: True

Most of Poison Ivy's actions in the past were crimes. She was a part of the Suicide Squad, Injustice Gang, Joker League of Anarchy, Society of Supervillains, and more. She was a thorn in the side of Batman and of Gotham City. However, in "The New 52" and "DC Rebirth", there are more instances of Ivy being portrayed as having a moral code and a conscience that goes beyond just eco-crime.

In one instance, Poison Ivy and Batman team up together to fight against Penguin and Emperor Penguin. She does get buried alive by the end of it, but, manages to get out. After all, how is placing a plant in the ground a bad thing?!
9. In 2016, Poison Ivy got her first comic book series where she is the titular character. Reminiscent of the plants she champions, what is the series subtitled?

Answer: Cycle of Life and Death

"Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death" was launched in 2016 and was the first comic book to feature Poison Ivy as the titular character. There were six issues in this series and they were authored by Amy Chu and illustrated by Clay Mann. Chu wanted to make her "sexy, but also smart and powerful" and was praised for some of the stories, however, the critics found many gaps in the narratives, inconsistencies, and deviations from the canon.

The illustrations were also praised for the level of detail, however, Mann's sexualization of the female characters drew a lot of criticism as well. All in all, the series was well-received and got a score of slightly over 7/10 overall.
10. Some of the character of Poison Ivy was based on the short story "Rappaccini's Daughter". What similarity do both the stories share?

Answer: Both characters are immune to toxic plants

Poison Ivy shares some similarity to Beatrice Rappaccini from the short story "Rappaccini's Daughter". Both of them have developed an immunity to natural toxins from the plant world, and both of them are able to wield this poison themselves. However, the story of Beatrice takes place in Padua, Italy, whereas Poison Ivy comes from Seattle, Washington, USA. Beatrice gained the immunity by being in her father's poison garden whereas Ivy was betrayed by her partner into being experimented upon. Finally, while Beatrice is given a 'cure' which ultimately kills her, each time that Poison Ivy is killed, she is buried and manages to come back from death.
