Question 2 of 10
2. When the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off, the cells supplied by that blood vessel are deprived of the oxygen and nutrients needed to function normally and a stroke results.
Which of the following statements regarding stroke is INCORRECT?
Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. Certain diseases predispose to clot formation. Clots in turn may travel to, and obstruct a vessel in the brain, leading to ischemic stroke.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is another name for a stroke?

Answer: Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)

Cerebro pertains to cerebrum,(a part of the brain). Vascular refers to blood vessel. A cerebrovascular accident, therefore, is a condition which results from sudden injury or occlusion of a blood vessel supplying the brain.
Cerebral palsy results from brain damage during pregnancy or around the time of birth.
Myocardial infarction and angina pectoris are heart problems resulting from inadequate oxygenation of heart muscles.
2. When the blood supply to a part of the brain is cut off, the cells supplied by that blood vessel are deprived of the oxygen and nutrients needed to function normally and a stroke results. Which of the following statements regarding stroke is INCORRECT?

Answer: A stroke is always associated with severe headache.

Strokes are classified as ischemic or hemorrhagic. More than 80% of strokes are ischemic. They may be caused either by a clot growing in a blood vessel(thrombus)in the brain, or by a clot lodging in the blood vessel after being formed elsewhere in the body (embolus).

Hemorrhagic stroke on the other hand, results from a ruptured blood vessel in the brain. A headache is a common feature in this type of brain injury.
3. Which of the following individuals is at GREATEST risk of a stroke?

Answer: A person who has uncontrolled hypertension.

Although all of these individuals are at risk for development of a stroke, uncontrolled hypertension remains the leading risk factor in both ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke.
4. Certain diseases predispose to clot formation. Clots in turn may travel to, and obstruct a vessel in the brain, leading to ischemic stroke. Which of these conditions does NOT predispose to ischemic stroke?

Answer: Cerebral aneurysm.

All of these conditions except for aneurysm are associated with clot formation and hence ischemic stroke. An aneurysm is a bulge in a weakened area of the blood vessel wall. This bulge is susceptible to rupture, for example, if the blood pressure is too high. Hemorrhagic stroke then results.
5. Which of the following manifestations is NOT typical of a stroke?

Answer: Substernal pain, radiating to the left arm and lower jaw.

People having a stroke commonly experience weakness, numbness or paralysis on one side of the body. If the victim stretches both arms outwards, one arm may drift down involuntarily. Speech and vision problems are also common.
Although the symptoms of a stroke vary widely, depending on the part of the brain affected, substernal pain is not a feature. The pain described here is typical of a heart attack, which, depending on the cause, may predispose to a stroke.
6. Preceding an actual stroke, some individuals may experience what is called a transient ischemic attack (TIA), in which they experience stroke-like symptoms. These symptoms however, tend to disappear quickly without any intervention. What advice should you give to a person who has had a TIA?

Answer: Report to the emergency room as soon as possible.

A stroke may occur without warning. In about a third of cases however, a client may experience a transient ischemic attack. They are similar to those of a stroke but resolve completely within a 24 hour period. Seeking medical attention promptly may help to diagnose and treat modifiable risk factors and prevent stroke. One should not offer a stroke victim anything to drink, as some stroke victims lose their ability to swallow safely, resulting in aspiration of fluid into the lungs.

In addition, lowering the blood pressure during an actual stroke may be harmful.
7. Clinical manifestations of stroke vary widely, depending on which blood vessel is affected. An occlusion of the middle cerebral artery, for example, may result in dysgraphia. What is dysgraphia?

Answer: Inability to write

Difficulty in reading is referred to as dyslexia.
The inability to speak is termed aphasia.
Swallowing difficulty is known as dysphagia.
8. Which of the following studies is used to diagnose ischemic stroke?

Answer: Computerized Axial Tomography or (CAT Scan) of the brain.

All of these studies are commonly done for the stroke victim. However, of the ones listed above, only the CAT Scan of the brain is diagnostic. EEG can be used to detect seizures or abnormal brain activity. Chest x-ray and ECG are used to diagnose underlying heart problems.
9. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) is a drug used to dissolve clots in ischemic stroke. Which statement is TRUE of tPA?

Answer: In order to be effective, it should be given within a certain time frame.

Once a person qualifies for tPA,the drug is injected into the blood stream where it travels to and dissolves the clot. Blood flow to the brain is restored and a reversal of symptoms may occur much sooner than in the client who was unable to get the medication.

This means shorter hospital stay and fewer complications. tPA is best given within the first 3 hours of the onset of symptoms. In some countries, the accepted window is within the first 4.5 hours. Bleeding is the main side effect of tPA hence is contraindicated in hemorrhagic stroke. Since tPA is a clot buster, patients with myocardial infarction and pulmonary embolism may also benefit from its use.
10. In order to reduce the incidence of long term disability, rehabilitative care of stroke victims should begin as soon as possible. This requires the collaborative efforts of a multidisciplinary team. Which of the following team members helps the stroke survivor to re-learn basic skills such as bathing, dressing, cooking and writing?

Answer: The Occupational Therapist

The Occupational Therapist is the team member responsible for helping the stroke survivor re-learn activities of daily living.
