Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Prior to commercialization of lithium ion batteries in the 1990s, the most popular rechargeable battery was the NiCad. What two metals are found in a NiCad battery?

Answer: nickel and cadmium

NiCad cells were popular in part because of their nominal voltage (1.2 V), which was close enough to the nominal voltage of an alkaline battery (1.5 V) to allow their use in many popular electronic devices. The greater specific energy of lithium ion batteries, along with environmental concerns about cadmium toxicity, led to a gradual phasing out of NiCad batteries.

2. It could give you a sour disposition. If you suffer from GERD, you might call it what?

Answer: Acid reflux

GERD is an abbreviation for gastroesophageal reflux disease, more commonly called acid reflux. The condition is very common, affecting 10% to 20% of the population. It is caused by the poor closure of the lower esophageal sphincter, which allows the contents of the stomach to rise into the esophagus. Symptoms can be mild to severe, and include heartburn, a sour taste in the mouth, and pain when swallowing.

There are a number of treatments available, including dietary modification, antacids, and prescription drugs.

In severe cases, surgery may be called for.

3. The loss of your pancreas due to injury or disease will cause the onset of which of the following disorders?

Answer: Diabetes

The pancreas is a small organ that is found behind most of the other organs in your abdomen. The function of the pancreas is to produce digestive juices that help your intestines break down and absorb the nutrients from your food. The second important function is the making of hormones that are released into the blood stream and help control the metabolism of sugar. Loss of your pancreas from injury or disease will cause the immediate onset of diabetes.

4. Which of the following hormones does not have a function in the menstrual cycle of a woman?

Answer: Insulin

Insulin is secreted from the pancreas and usually has a catabolic effect on glucose in the blood. It is the lack of this hormone that is the cause of diabetes. It does not play a role in menstruation but during pregnancy, abnormalities in the amount of insulin in the mother's body can lead to gestational diabetes mellitus.

Progesterone and oestrogen are secreted by the ovaries. Luteinizing hormone and follicular stimulating hormone are secreted by the pituitary gland. All of these hormones are involved in some way or the other in menstruation and ovulation. Progesterone is involved in the maintenance of pregnancy.

5. Which of the following is NOT a measure of astronomical distance?

Answer: quasar

A quasar is generally considered to be the central region of a distant galaxy so far away that the light we receive from it is billions of years old. In this way, we can look into the history of the universe. The other three are various distances.

7. What non-metal has the symbol F and the atomic number 9?

8. The protein hemoglobin is used in which type of cells?

Answer: Red Blood Cells

Hemoglobin is a protein formed of two subunits (alpha and beta) that are found in red blood cells. The protein functions to pick up oxygen and distribute it throughout the body. Both the alpha and beta subunits need to be present for the acquisition of oxygen, as does an iron molecule.

Indeed, it is the presence of the iron that gives red blood cells the distinctive color that inspired their name.

9. When used to describe a metal like gold, silver, copper, or iron, what does "native" mean?

Answer: found naturally in a metallic form

Native metal is metal that is found as a pure metal, or as an alloyed metal, rather than in a compound like salt (or other minerals). Most metal on Earth is not native, because metals tend to be reactive. Gold-group and platinum-group metals are most commonly found in native form, because they are less reactive than other metals.

10. Plants grow best under which of these conditions?

Answer: Using sustainable gardening practices

Sustainable gardening causes no harm to the earth or those who eat the produce grown in it. It does not require tilling the soil or adding artificial nutrients, pesticides or herbicides. Instead the soil is composed of rich, loamy, well drained soil that contains aged compost, and has a balanced ph level. Easy ingredients to begin making a compost pile would be using egg shells, used coffee grounds, banana peels and fallen leaves.
