Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Some people think there are only five senses, but we actually have more, such as our sense of balance. Where are the balance sensors in the human body?

Answer: Ears

Most people associate ears with hearing, but there are actually two other senses that use the ear. In each ear is a saccule and a utricle, which detect movement and orientation (balance). Also in the ear are the semi-circular canals, which are used to detect rotational acceleration (how fast you turn your head).

3. The surgical installation of a cochlear implant assists patients with what?

Answer: hearing

A cochlear implant is an electronic device which converts sound waves into electrical signals which are transmitted directed to the auditory nerve. The hearing is different from that afforded by the more common acoustic hearing process but is a remarkable adaptation, especially for the profoundly deaf. Earliest models were invented in 1957; later versions were invented in 1961, 1964 and 1977. Some members of the Deaf Community oppose the use of cochlear implants because they regard them as a threat to their culture.

4. Tides are the periodic rise and fall of which of these areas of water?

Answer: All three

That was a tricky one, because all these are affected by tides. Tides are the rise and fall of sea levels caused by effects of both the Sun and the Moon's gravitational pulls, as well as the Earth's rotational influence. All of Earth's water is affected by this gravity play, but it's more noticeable in larger bodies of water.

6. Referring to taxonomy, the biological arrangement of organisms uses the letters KPCOFGS to define the first letters of each division. What division would the letter "C" then represent?

Answer: Class

At the class level, the individuals within its defining group begin to show more and more characteristics that are obviously different from other organisms in other classes - but still similar with each other. Nonetheless, scientists take different approaches to the defining lines of each category. What may be a defined as a class in one taxonomical system may not be the same in another one.

8. ANATOMY: Which prefix is INCORRECTLY matched to the organ/body part it references?

Answer: hepato-kidney

Hepato means relating to the liver, and comes from "hepar," the Greek word for liver. Many of our technical medical terms come from the Greek and/or the Latin and use various prefix forms for a particular organ or body part combined with a suffix for a given condition, operation, field of study or person to give us an English word; for example hepatitis meaning inflammation of the liver or osteopath meaning bone doctor. Nephro and rena are prefixes relating to the kidneys.

10. For all of Bill's life he has had rhotacism. Which of these doctors does he visit often?

Answer: Speech therapist

Rhotacism is the failure to pronounce the sound r. That means every patient with rhotacism, can't say their condition! The condition is found most in languages that contain a trilled r like Swedish, Polish, Spanish, and Italian. Elmer Fudd, of Looney Tunes fame, is probably the most recognized sufferer of rhotacism. "Be vewwy quiet. I'm hunting wabbits!".

Other rhotacists are interviewer Barbara Walters and BBC presenter Jonathan Ross.
