Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What bodily function can result in an emission that may travel at up to 100 mph?

2. What is the term for burning flesh to seal a wound?

Answer: Cauterizing

Cauterization was a painful but necessary procedure in the past. Amputations were commonly treated in this manner. This would not only seal the wound but help with infection. Battlefield wounds were treated in this manner. Fortunately medical science has less painful ways to treat wounds. Cauterization is used for wart removal and chemical cauterization is commonly used for persistent nosebleeds.

3. In an ecosystem, a detritivore eats which of these?

Answer: dead organic matter

Detritivores, such as worms, eat detritus which means dead leaves, plants or animals. They are vital components in the circle of life - recycling essential nutrients.

4. The zeroth law, which deals with the concept of thermal equilibrium, is one of the laws of what?

Answer: Thermodynamics

Thermodynamics is a scientific discipline that seeks to understand things such as temperature and the more abstract notion of heat and how they tie in to the broader concepts of energy and work. The zeroth law is one of the laws of thermodynamics and it states that "If system A is in thermal equilibrium with system C, and system B is in thermal equilibrium with system C, then system A is in thermal equilibrium with system B." 5. Phrenology was a once popular scientific theory that said human talents and personality traits could be determined by what physical feature?

Answer: Bumps on the skull

Phrenology was very popular during the first half of the 19th century, and continued to have its adherents into the early 20th century. A German physician, Franz Joseph Gall, postulated that the human brain was divided into 27 areas, each controlling a different trait.

The skull was supposed to reflect the degree of development of each of these areas. By feeling the skull, he claimed he could tell if a person had musical talent, for instance, or if he possessed criminal tendencies. Having one's head "read" by practitioners of phrenology was once a popular pastime.

By the middle of the 19th century, phrenology had been discredited as a scientific theory.

7. In a 15 question multiple choice quiz with 4 answer possibilities per question, which would be the most likely number of correct answers given by pure guessing?

Answer: 4

Since you have a 25% chance to guess each question correctly, this translates to an average of 3.75 questions correct on a 15 question quiz. Since this number is closer to 4 than to 3, the most probable outcome is 4 correct answers.

8. Two competing hypotheses, the "theropod dinosaur hypothesis" and the "basal archosaur hypothesis" attempt to explain the origins of what group of animals?

Answer: birds

The theropod dinosaur hypothesis posits that birds are direct descendants of dinosaurs, and that they were originated "from the ground up"; that is, wings became a feature of birds from dinosaurs that lived on the ground. The basal archosaur hypothesis posits that birds and dinosaurs shared a similar reptilian ancestor, but that birds did not come directly from dinosaurs.

This hypothesis is "from the trees down", believing that the relative of these two groups lived in the trees, where wings were vital for gliding/flying, and then later came down to live on the land.

9. A distinctive fizzing noise known as "bergy seltzer" is a result of what phenomenon?

Answer: Melting icebergs

This type of sound occurs when the pressure of the air bubbles is released during the melting of glacier ice. The sound is similar to the sizzle made by soft drinks or soda water but is significantly louder, like popping. An alternative term is "ice sizzle".

10. What kind of rotating astronomical object, when emitting electromagnetic radiation, is known as a pulsar?

Answer: Neutron star

The discovery of pulsars by Jocelyn Bell Burnell was the first observation to suggest that neutron stars exist. A neutron star is formed when a giant star, with a previous mass of ten times to twenty nine times the mass of the sun, collapses. They have a very high rate of rotation, resulting in a very high magnetic field.

A neutron star is overwhelmingly composed of neutrons.
