Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Yellow fever, malaria and dengue are diseases carried by which of these?

Answer: Mosquitoes

There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes all over the planet. Some of them are responsible for the transmission of these diseases, for example, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.

Question by player masfon
2. Red blood cells are needed for people to survive. What is a function of red blood cells?

Answer: Carry oxygen and carbon dioxide

Oxygen and carbon dioxide are carried by red blood cells during gaseous exchange. The liver produces bile. Red cells do not produce hormones or carry saliva. The abbreviation for red blood cells is RBC.

3. Doctor, I'm very feverish, I have a bad headache, and I have these painful swellings in my groin and armpits. All this, and my pet rat has fleas, too! What's wrong with me?

Answer: Bubonic plague

Bubonic plague, also known as 'the Black Death', killed over 70 million people in Europe in the 14th Century (nearly half the total population). It still occurs today, rarely. Without medical treatment, you would have one chance in three of surviving the disease.

Question by player Rimrunner
4. If I fractured my scapula, what part of my body is affected the most?

Answer: Shoulder

The main function of the scapula is to connect the upper arm to the collar bone. Most fractures of this bone occur from blunt trauma (a direct hit).

5. When working with a radioactive source, it is important to keep your exposure as low as reasonably achievable. Which of these is NOT a way to reduce your exposure to radiation?

Answer: Move closer to the source

ALARA -- "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" -- is the bedrock principle for working around radiation. The radiation from a source falls off as one over the distance squared, so if you're a meter away, you'll get only 1/100 of the dose you would have received at 10 cm. You also want to spend as little time as possible near the source; it's a very good idea to rehearse your actions, so that you'll be able to perform them smoothly and quickly. Finally, you can add shielding between yourself and the source, like the lead apron that's used when you get dental X-rays.

The best kind of shielding will depend on the type of radiation that you expect, but there's always something that will help.

6. Popular in opera, both Mimi from "La Boheme" and Violetta in "La Traviata" eventually succumb to what illness, referred to as "consumption" or the "white death"?

Answer: tuberculosis

Tuberculosis is still a major cause of illness worldwide, and new drug-resistant strains threaten to overwhelm our ability to combat the disease.

Question by player pusdoc
7. Which of these could cause the leaves on a green plant to turn purple?

Answer: A lack of nutrients in the soil.

Plants need phosphorous and potassium in order to grow healthily. A lack of these nutrients can cause discolouration in the plant. Sometimes, the soil might be deficient, or the plant could have trouble absorbing what it needs.

Question by player AcrylicInk
8. Which of these nutrients is yogurt rich in, while the other ones listed have much lower levels?

Answer: calcium

one cup of plain yogurt contains around 20% of one's daily calcium needs. Calcium slows the production of cortisol, a hormone that increases belly-fat buildup. A study by the University of Tennessee revealed that people on a low-calorie diet that included yogurt lost 81% more belly fat than dieters on a similar plan but without the yogurt.

Question by player Billkozy
9. At room temperature, what state of matter are most metals in their pure state?

Answer: Solid

Most nonmetals are gases, but all metals except mercury are in a solid state at room temperature. Bromine, one of the nonmetal halogens, is also a liquid (a foul-smelling one at that) at room temperature.

Question by player klavierstueck
10. What is the most prevalent noncontagious disease?

Answer: Tooth Decay

Tooth decay or "dental caries" affects about 30% of the worlds population at any one time according to the World Health Organisation. All the diseases may be passed on genetically but are not contagious.
